The PHP User Groups diffusion is an initiative to help existing groups gain visibility among PHP users of the same region. The PHP Classes site is very popular world wide, being accessed by tens of thousands of users from more than 130 countries. The idea is to use this fact to provide greater exposure to regional groups, overcoming the lack of budget of most PHP user groups, unlike other languages user groups that are backed by large companies.

eBay initiative unites industry leaders
and environmental groups to reduce
e-waste
01/06/2005 05:56 PM
eBay today launched its Rethink Initiative that helps consumers and businesses learn about the different e-waste alternatives, such as recycling and refurbishing, and makes it easy to put this knowledge into action. The new program acts to coordinate efforts by industry leaders Apple, Gateway, HP, IBM, Intel Corp. and Ingram Micro with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the non-profit Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition, UPS and the U.S. Postal Service, among other participants, and millions of eBay users to confront the problem of e-waste - unused or obsolete computers that may pose environmental hazards when disposed of in landfills. The centerpiece of the program, which was launched at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week, is the new website designed for education and communication, www.ebay.com/rethink. "eBay's millions of users can be a powerful force for good," said Meg Whitman, eBay president and CEO. "The Rethink Initiative will educate consumers on how to properly dispose of or recycle the millions of tons of e-waste they confront each year. We're extremely excited about the positive role eBay's user community will play in confronting this environmental dilemma." Industry analyst Gartner estimates that in the U.S. alone, about 133,000 PCs per day are currently being retired and replaced by their original owners. These systems may contain hazardous materials, such as plastic, lead, cadmium, chromium, and mercury that need to be handled in an environmentally responsible manner. Yet Americans' understanding of recycling and reuse options remains limited - only about 10 percent of unwanted PCs in the U.S. are recycled, according to the Grass Roots Recycling Network.

Adam C. Engst (~130 words)

Adam & Tonya at New Mexico User Groups -- Tonya and I have never traveled to the southwest United States, so we're particularly looking forward to a trip to visit not one, not two, but three New Mexico-based Macintosh user groups in early May. At 7:00 PM on 03-May-05, I'll be speaking in Albuquerque to the AppleQuerque Macintosh User Group. Then, on the afternoon of 04-May-05, I'll address the Los Alamos Macintosh User Group, and at 7:00 PM that evening, the Santa Fe Macintosh User Group. I'm planning to talk primarily about iPhoto and wireless security; Tonya will be on hand to chat about Take Control and electronic publishing in general. If you're in the area, come say hello!
