08/09/2004 07:55 AMApple Computer Inc. has agreed to a smaller number of iBooks than it
originally proposed for an expansion of its iBook program to Maine
public high schools, according to the
Associate
d Press. The company has a program in place that puts iBooks into
the hands of all middle schoolers in the state, and it now looks like
about one-third of high schools will get them as well.

06/22/2004 03:43 PMThe state of Maine already has deployed Apple iBooks at all seventh

05/05/2004 02:12 PMThe state of Maine has distinguished itself by offering iBooks to all
public school seventh and eighth graders. The cost of the iBook
program has been a political minefield especially as legislators in
the cash-strapped state consider expanding it to public high
schoolers. A new deal put forth by Apple may give that plan new hope,
according to the Portland Press Herald: Apple is willing to rent
laptops and defer their payments for a year.
Comment Goal Reached
Comment Goal Reached
09/07/2004 11:52 PMWe very quietly reached another goal this week. Since I started
this site almost three years ago, I've wanted to have as many comments
as I had entries. I don't know why, it just seemed like a good goal
to have.
The first iteration of the site was a custom PHP app that didn't
even have comments, so we got a late start. We flirted with the goal
for the last few weeks, but it doesn't help that we're posting like
chipmunks on crack these days. I'm also really anal-retentive about
the comments — there are no spams, "me toos," or test comments
in the database. All comments are legit.
Anyway, comments passed up entries on Sunday. As I write this, we
have 2,909 entries and 2,938 comments. Next goal: 3,000 entries,
which we'll hit by the end of the month. The ultimate goal has always
been 5,000 entries, and we're on a pace to hit that by the end of next
year.

Michigan May Kill Student Laptop Program
Michigan May Kill Student Laptop Program
04/18/2005 02:28 PMIn the past we've written about various "laptops in schools" programs
-- mainly in Maine and Michigan where they've been seen as
succes
s stories in improving education and (most importantly) getting
kids excited to learn. While simply adding laptops to schools isn't
the answer -- a well designed program designed to really make use of
computers in schools to help kids learn and get them interested in
education is a good thing. However, a budget crunch in Michigan has
the state
think
ing about killing the program, meaning that some students would
have their laptops yanked away, and others may not be able to get
laptops at all. You have to wonder, though, if there's a compromise
solution. Certainly, some kids already have computers (desktop or
laptop) at home -- so perhaps there's a better way to set up the
program that focuses more on those kids whose families really can't
afford a laptop. Yes, this opens the program up to abuse -- but with
the country falling so far behind in education, it seems like a
program that seems to get kids excited about learning deserves a bit
of support.

Plainview Pre-School Launches First
Wireless Laptop Computer Technology
Program for Preschoolers
12/22/2004 01:33 AMLooking for the perfect Christmas gift for that hard to please 3 or 4
year old? Wireless laptops are at the top of the list for some 100
children at Louisville’s Plainview Pre-school. This fall, students
began using wireless laptops in one of the country’s first wireless
computer labs just for preschoolers! It is all part of the ground
breaking educational approaches at Plainview Pre-School designed to
boost preschooler’s brainpower and future college readiness at a cost
that won’t turn parents into scrooges. Students receive weekly
instruction in the school’s new wireless computer lab plus classroom
visits with an assortment of technological equipment including
laptops, digital cameras, recording devices, and listening centers.
According to the school officials, this gives children a chance to use
technology for real problem solving rather than just for entertainment
and since appropriate stimuli such as engaging hands-on activities
with computers enhances early brain development, the school believes
laptops are the perfect choice for a preschooler’s small hand size.
The cost for the program is included in the school's unique tuition
structure which school officials says offers a high quality program
and at a cost well below what many other preschool programs charge.
