This article is supposed to be a review of the first PC with a Linux distribution preloaded offered by a tier-one OEM to the general public. As announced during the Linux World Conference and Expo in August, the NX5000 is available -- only online at HP -- preloaded with your choice of a custom version of SUSE 9.1 or Windows XP. You can purchase the NX5000 at other online resellers, but only with Windows installed. This isn't quite the review I hoped for, but it's as close as we could get.

Progeny, which calls itself "The Linux Platform Company," has made a Debian port of Red Hat's Anaconda installer. Progeny is also continuing its work on Discover, an XML-based utility that may revolutionize the way Linux detects hardware and loads kernel modules or other drivers. None of this work is immediately visible to end users, says Progeny Director of Technology John Daily, but these open source projects, and others Progeny is supporting, have the potential to make Linux easier to administer for everyone from high-end enterprise sysadmins to home users who only use their computers for simple office tasks.

03/13/2003 10:22 AM

If you have PHP installed and you've loaded up 10.2.4 you've probably noticed that PHP no longer works. By editing httpd.conf in the following way I was able to get PHP back and running. Disclaimer: I don't really know what I'm doing here, I'm just a guy armed with BBEdit and some vague notions. Follow my lead at your peril. That said:

  1. Open httpd.conf in the text editor of your choice.
  2. Find the following lines and uncomment them:
    #LoadModule php4_module libexec/httpd/libphp4.so
    #AddModule mod_php4.c
  3. Find this line:
    Include /private/etc/httpd/users
  4. And add this line right after it:
    AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
  5. Save.
  6. Open your System Preferences, go to Sharing and restart your web server.
PHP should be running again. At least, it is for me ;-) Discuss

MCI For Sale

MCI For Sale 09/20/2004 01:24 PM
It looks like MCI's turnaround plan hasn't turned it around far enough. Reports are out this morning that the company is actively looking for a buyer. The company pretty much stopped doing very much at all for an extended period of time while they had to deal with all those pesky accounting scam problems. Now that they have their head above water, they're realizing that the tide has pushed them far, far away from where the rest of the telecom world is. While the article speculates that they may have trouble selling themselves, that might not be the case. The now-out-of-bankrupt company has a (hopefully) clean set of books, plenty of customers, and a network that many other companies already drool over. The one area that they probably should just jettison, though, is their consumer business -- or at least pull an AT&T move and focus only on VoIP. Of course, just like AT&T, MCI made the bizarre move to ditch their wireless play when having a foot in the wireless market was clearly in their long-term best interests.

L-I-N-D-O-W-S for sale on eBay 09/20/2004 10:53 AM
Have you ever wished you had started and owned Lindows instead of Michael Robertson? After all, the upstart Linux distribution first gained huge notoriety by pulling on the whiskers of the Microsoft monopoly, then by losing a few rounds in court as Gates and company went global court-shopping, but finally banking hundreds of millions of dollars to settle the suit Microsoft had filed against it here in the U.S. Well, whip out your credit card, because you can pick up L-I-N-D-O-W-S right now on eBay for a starting bid of just a couple hundred dollars. The original Lindows signage, that is.

KITT for sale

KITT for sale 07/22/2004 03:00 PM
82021KITT (Knight Industry Two Thousand), from the 1980s TV series Knight Rider, is up for auction on eBay. Apparently this was one of the tricked-out 1983 Trans Ams actually used in the show:
"After being released from its film duties, KITT found its way into the show circuit by promoting many Budweiser World of Wheels car shows for a number of years. After its tour of duty, the car was in need of restoration and in 2001 the owner approached Mark Scrivani of Mark's Custom Kits to restore the vehicle. The original, futuristic dash built by universal would only illuminate and was not intended to be functional; the owner commissioned Scrivani to make the dash fully functional, thus, the various non-functioning consoles were removed, cleaned up and made functional with pushable buttons, sound and visual effects. The dash received fully operational gauges and instruments, as well as an in-car camera tied into one of the two dash-mounted LCD monitors. The other monitor is wired into a trunk-mounted VCR for running and viewing tapes for future car show use. The original scanner mounted in the front of the vehicle was restored and functions properly. The scanner sound effect is also added to external speakers so it can be heard while the scanner is running. Besides the original Universal registration, the car comes with the original stamped steel "KNIGHT" license plate..."

Comic Art #6 on sale

Comic Art #6 on sale 09/21/2004 08:56 PM
Mark Frauenfelder: comicartI picked up issue #6 of Comic Art magazine last week. What a treat. sethThere's a long article about Seth (creator of Palookaville) with plenty of pictures, including a cardboard city he built (seen on the cover) and a page from his sketchbook (which I scanned here -- incredible! Click on thumb for enlargement). Unfortunately, no pictures of Seth. I've only seen other people's drawings of Seth. (He's always wearing a vintage hat and suit and chain smoking when people draw him.)

6dThere's another article about Virgil Partch (aka "VIP"), a delightfully wacky cartoonist from the 40s and 50s. If you look closely at the hands on VIP's characters, you'll notice that they have more than five fingers. Sometimes they have as many as 12 fingers on a hand! He did this because he used to work at Disney, where he was forced to draw four-fingered characters. The extras fingers were his way of evening the score.

The price of Comic Art is $9, which is a good deal, because it's glossy color throughout. Link
