SMC Offers Multifunction Traveling
Gateway
08/03/2004 01:04 PM

SMC has thrown the kitchen sink into its traveler's access point, a street price $99 device that has the full complement of Wi-Fi options: The AirPort Express ($129) from Apple may be cute and small, but the SMC has four modes versus AirPort Express's 2 1/2. Express can act as a client (for streaming music and USB only), a WDS relay or remote (to Apple or compatible gateways only), or a standalone 802.11g/WPA gateway. I count Apple's client mode as 1/2 since it can't handle traffic over its Ethernet port as a bridge in that mode, apparently. The SMC--trippingly off the tongue call it EZ Connect™ g 2.4GHz 802.11g Wireless Traveler’s Kit (SMCWTK-G)--can act as an access point, an Ethernet bridge (so full MAC masquerading onto any network), Ethernet bridge, repeater, and point-to-point or point-to-multipoint bridge. (Those last two are similar WDS modes, so I won't count them separately.) SMC doesn't mention weight or the size of the power cord. The Express has an integral power plug, but you can get an extension cord as part of an audio/power kit for $39. The SMC unit can draw power over USB, too. [link via Tom's Networking]...

I'll be leaving in a few hours... so the last couple of days have been a mix of work and preparation.

The worst part is choosing which books to take. If it was up to me, I would just take them all. Sure, I'll read maybe one or two, but which two? Arrrgh!

ebooks are ok, but I still want books. Paper. Hardcovers. Not even fancy e-ink systems would do. But, for a trip, if I could just dump all my meatspace library into a single e-volume and take that, it would be great. Every book should come built-in with a digital version. So how about it? One of those 2.5 inch CDs behind every book's cover? Now that's multimedia that I'd buy.

That aside, I've got a good assortment of videos and music on the notebook, so I won't have to fear lame in-flight movies either.

More tomorrow, after the timezone change (transatlantic trips going west never fail to leave me a bit frazzled--on second though, going East as well :)).

A Traveling Story

A Traveling Story 01/06/2005 12:01 PM

I just got back to Washington after a long trip over the holidays back home to Wisconsin. I wanted to pass along a quick story from my trip.

While waiting for my flight out of Seattle, I ran into a staff photographer from the Chicago Tribune. He does photos for the hardcopy paper only, not the online version. He was in Seattle for a story they were running on Boeing. I asked him what he used for a camera, certain it was a 35mm but was shocked to hear they converted a few years ago to Digital. But then the real surprise came, they use a Nikon D1H, an old 3 megapixel SLR Digital. I asked why only a 3 megapixel camera and he told me that it was all they needed for news print quality. This year they are converting to a D2X which is a 12 megapixel camera, but they are in no rush. He travels with a Mac iBook and uploads the photos via FTP to the Trib's server every evening.

Just goes to show you that the megapixel aspect of a digital camera is not as important as some companies tend to make you believe.

Traveling with intrigue

Traveling with intrigue 01/04/2004 03:32 PM
Weird experiences galore: sitting today on an underground carriage (Piccadilly line, if you must know), watching three ladies. Obviously a family, since they all looked alike, but what really captivated me were their completely bland faces and vacant eyes that stared at the opposite wall somewhere around my chest level. The only way I could tell they were alive were the small twitches of their jaws, as they chewed on bubblegum in unison, with the centre lady - well, a girl really - doing a pop every 8 chews or so. It was fascinating. Just like in Stomp.

My eerie feeling of displacement to another plane was suddenly doubled, as a dwarf walked in and started to play a very bad rendering of "Lambada" on a bloody accordion. The dwarf did upon closer examination turn out to be a 12-year old child, but for a moment I thought I had woken up in a David Lynch movie.

Anyway, home sweet home and all that. I'm back in Helsinki. Whee. I'm so happy I don't have to work tomorrow.

Six multifunction printers for Linux

Six multifunction printers for Linux 12/05/2003 05:32 AM
Have you been looking for an "All-in-one" (aka known as MFP, multi-function printer) for your Linux desktop? So have we, with somewhat mixed results. We found no MFPs in our price range (under $500.00) which are shipped with drivers for Linux. But we did find a number of MFPs which are usable on Linux machines, thanks to free software drivers available either with your Linux distribution or on the Internet. Be warned, however, that not every feature or function of many of the printers we found work with the free drivers. Here's the story on what we found, along with six specific MFPs that work with free software drivers and Linux to consider during your holiday shopping.

AP - The members of Beastie Boys are flashing liquor and cash while betting on a street-level parlor game — with a Jewish twist. Instead of a 40-ounce brew, Adrock throttles a bottle of Manischewitz wine. In lieu of dice, MCA tosses a dreidel as Mike D hangs back with a gold Kiddush cup. Moments later, MCA, the band's self-styled Kung Fu master, chops through a thick stack of matzo bread like Bruce Lee busting through three-ply mahogany.
