Wall Street Journal's technology columnist, Walter

Walkman portable music device to feature a hard drive (subscription
required to read the article). Already dubbed an "iPod killer" by some
industry wags, the Walkman fails to impress Mossberg on several
points, including "confusing" user interface, "tedious" song-loading
process that took more than two hours to transfer 416 songs, and less
robust companion music download service that also sports more
restrictive rules than the iTunes Music store. "The iPod wins this
round, and remains champion," said Mossberg.

Sony's 3 CCD HDV HDR-FX1 Camcorder
09/07/2004 06:47 AM
Sony's new 3 CCD HDV camcorder, the HDR-FX1, has
been formally introduced by the company after an initial preview at
this year's CeBit. What makes it so special? Well, along with a host
of other interesting features, the FX1 has the ability to capture
video in 1080i at 60 interlaced frames per second. Add into that a
projected street price of only around $3,500 and the FX1 becomes a
pretty amazing piece of gear, and definitely one that will get most
prosumer and semi-pro film makers all hot and bothered. The FX1 should
be available in November, and a hands-on with the press is expected
tomorrow (so expect to see more news). (Thanks, David!)

by Sony today, although the rest are these Yet Another Flash Drives,
which Sony has updated across the line. The Pocket Bit U-Mini D
(USM-D) are 30 percent smaller than previous models in sizes up to
256MB. The USM-F include a fingerprint sensor for security, although
it only comes in a 128MB flavor. The USB-BMS is a 128MB model that
includes a Memory Stick PRO slot, which would make it a bit more handy
than just a generic Memory Stick PRO reader, if that's the flash
memory format you're locked into you've chosen. And
finally, the USM-E, which isn't really that special except that it's
the largest of them all, capacity-wise, at 512MB.

WiMax iPod with No Hard Drive?
WiMax iPod with No Hard Drive?
08/23/2004 08:53 AMI hate freedom, so I'm not going to comment on the main thrust of
this article which talks about the ramifications of the recent MGM
v. Grokster ruling on the music industry, but I would point out
the odd mention of a wireless iPod, with a twist. While people have
been talking about an iPod with built-in AirPort for a while now (to
enable direct-to-AirPort Express streaming, for one thing), this is
the first I've heard anyone mention an iPod with built-in WiMax
(Intel's unreleased, long-range wireless networking service), let
alone one without a hard-drive.
I think it's best to chalk it up as rumor for now, but if anyone
has an inside line on something along those lines, I would be pleased
to make your acquaintance.

iPod Firmware Petition
iPod Firmware Petition
07/22/2004 01:22 PMWith the recent release of the
4G iPods, Apple released an iPod firmware update
adding new features/functionality to the iPod. Unfortunately, the new
features are only available to 4G ("click wheel") iPods?leaving the
not-so-old 3G iPods in the dust.
When I first heard about this, my first response was, "Why can?t they
just release the same firmware upgrade for both the 3G and 4G models?"
I don?t know about models older than 3G, but as far as I know, the new
model is exactly the same as the 3G. The firmware could easily work
for both. This seems to be a marketing ploy on Apple?s part. Get the
people who want these simple new features to buy a whole new iPod.
Well, people aren?t buying it.
Enter the
Apple iPod Firmware Petition,
signed by over 3,000 people when this entry was posted, which states
the following:
To: Apple Computer
We, the owners of previous models of the Apple iPod (1G/2G/3G),
believe that we have been snubbed by Apple. With each new generation
some or many of the new features added are only software changes, and
could be easily added to past iPods with a firmware update. But
instead of updating older iPods, Apple has simply ignored older users.
We believe that any new improvements that can be added via firmware to
the older generation iPods should be instituted
Sincerely,
The Undersigned

RetroPod: Hipster Hard Case for iPod
RetroPod: Hipster Hard Case for iPod
07/01/2004 12:31 PM
The god damned hipsters have struck again
-- and this time, it's portable. The Retropod is a, uhm, retrofitting
of older Sony "Sports Walkmans" that is probably the very least
functional case for iPods I've ever seen. All you get is a headphone
out, and you have to open up the case to get to the controls. Even the
inline remote won't work, because of the way the headphone extender
works. But hey, their models are cute and that goes a long way, even
if I can smell the reek of Pabst right through the JPEG.
Now if the only option they offered were the $100 version, I'd have
to throw them back out on the curb where they mate and sleep, but
since they also have a $20 DIY version (Walkman not included), we'll
let it slide for now.

half that of Apple Computer Inc.'s highest capacity iPod, but Sony
says its player trumps Apple's in terms of the number of songs it can
