You've probably heard about the US Department of Energy's efforts to create a landmark to warn people to stay away from nuclear waste dumps in Nevada and New Mexico. The mission is to create some kind of warning system that will last for 10,000 years, and still be effective at delivering a message of danger that people in the distant future can comprehend. It's tough --the DOE has hired artists, architects, anthropologists, etc., but everything those people come up with to scare future generations away ends up looking more like a lure.

Here's what the DOE should do: hire Michael Eisner to design a theme park over the radioactive dumps. They'll never have to worry about anyone setting foot there again. As Boing Boing readers Vorbis comments on this photoessay of Disney's California Adventure Theme Park: "lookit how deserted this place seems to be not too long after the opening of the major ride." eBay's Digital Music Auction Silent

eBay's Digital Music Auction Silent 08/04/2004 11:41 AM
Last month, we noted that eBay was testing out a plan to let people sell digital downloads on the auction site. There were a lot of caveats. The person obviously needs to show they have the right to sell the music in question, which appeared to be the big hurdle they set up. However, a much bigger question is: who actually wants to sell a digital music file that can be copied for free or purchased at an online store for under $1 anyway? It turns out the answer is "nobody." Since it launched, other than a few fake postings that were quickly removed, there hasn't been a single legitimate listing. So much for that plan. It isn't a surprise really. It's pretty clear that there hasn't been a huge groundswell of people asking to resell their digital songs. Besides, most of the digital downloads that you purchase are wrapped so tight with copy protection selling them is nearly impossible anyway.

iTunes Music Store

iTunes Music Store 07/05/2004 02:15 PM

I used the iTunes Music Store for the first time today. I actually didn't want to install it, but Apple is bundling it with QuickTime these days, so you have to get one to get the other. Then my wife, Annie, heard about it, and she wanted to try it.

It was a great experience. It's pretty much a matter of creating an account, finding a song, then clicking "Buy Song." You can even surpress the "Do you really want this song?" warning so you can just click with wild abandon, racking up $0.99 charges right and left.

The real test came when I taught Annie how to use it (because, you know, you can never have enough Celine Dion). She took to it right away. The search has a spellcheck feature, which is handy when trying to spell "Alanis Morrissette," and the idea of double-clicking a song to hear a clip is very intutive. Annie doesn't know the names of any of the songs she likes, but she knows what they sound like, so she just kept double-clicking until she heard what she wanted, then she hit "Buy Song."

The only glitch we ran into was that we first fired it up under my Windows account, logging into iTunes as Annie. Now, when we open iTunes under Annie's Windows account, again logging in to iTunes under her account, none of the "Purchased Music" we bought under my Windows account is there. For some reason, the purchased music is tied to a specific Windows account, not an iTunes account. I'm not quite sure what to do about this — if you know, drop me a line.

Some music isn't available as single tracks, for some reason. For instance, Annie wanted a song off the De-lovely soundtrack, but it was marked "Album Only." Depressing, but I'm sure there's some high-powered business reason for it.

We haven't tryed burning anything to a CD yet, but when I do, I'll let you all know how it goes. Hats off to Apple — iTunes is a great piece of work.

Beatles May Get Their Own Music Download

Beatles May Get Their Own Music Download
Store
06/08/2004 05:12 PM
People have pointed out in the past that one of the major limitations to online download music stores is the fact that certain popular artists have not allowed their music to be (legally) offered online yet. Exhibit number one is always the Beatles. Well, now it appears that the Beatles are finally warming up to the idea, but only if someone is willing to pay them lots and lots and lots of money for the right to set up an exclusive Beatles store. That's right, the music wouldn't be available in just any download store, but a Beatles-only music store that would be run by some other company. While the article mentions Apple iTunes as a possibility, this seems unlikely unless the Beatles and Apple patch up their legal problems first. Either way, this points out just how ridiculous all these different online stores are. Would the Beatles have ever become famous if you could only buy their music in exclusive Beatles-only record stores, which would then only play on special Beatles-only record players, that had all sorts of limitations on what you could do compared to other music you owned? The Beatles may have been great musicians, but they now appear to be greedy and shortsighted in their attempt to move into the online world.
