My old friend Jim Henderson was in town a couple of weeks ago and we found time to catch up on what's happening in the world of eDirectory. Henderson is the co-author of "Novell's Guide to Troubleshooting eDirectory" (along with another old friend, Peter Kuo), the very able successor volume to the "Novell's Guide to Troubleshooting NDS" of a few years ago. I hadn't seen Henderson in person in a couple of years and a few changes have taken place in that time.

Houston's Blue Lance software has been almost exclusively a third-party supplier to the NetWare aftermarket ever since it was founded in 1985. While the company has extended its reach into the Windows server market (and we all know how that market can use some good auditing capabilities), Blue Lance has remained loyal to its NetWare roots through good times and bad.

A couple of weeks ago we were speculating about the possibilities of a Certified Novell Engineer educational track for Open Enterprise Server. I mentioned the possibility of somehow combining the NetWare 6 CNE with the Certified Linux Engineer certification Novell offers for SuSE Linux (NetWare and SuSE are the two components of OES).

On connectivity

On connectivity 05/26/2004 09:23 PM
A few years ago I got really tired of not being able to read or send email on the go, wherever I was. So I bought my own server, and have configured it so that I can read email with IMAP, or via logging in using SSH, or - if everything else fails - using the ever-so-clunky webmail. I also have my own private SMTP server, so I don't have to care what the local mail settings are - I just authenticate to my own server and send email through there. Everything is, of course, fully encrypted. I also keep all my email on the IMAP boxes, which reside in my $HOME/Mail, so I can easily go through them with a shell script, if necessary. It's good to have access through multiple means.

My preferred method of reading email these days is the Apple Mail.app. It's a very intuitive mail client, and does essentially everything a good mail client must do. And it has also the Apple Search - just type in stuff into a small box and it will look it up for you. No "Find" -buttons. Very convenient.

(Now I'm happy that I had the webmail backup, because here on the Kansai airport it seems that only HTTP and HTTPS traffic is allowed through the WLAN network. Oh well... Good things rarely come free. :)

Saw Mount Fuji. Impressed.

Connectivity

Connectivity 06/28/2004 08:07 PM

The irony of being at a computer conference with all this wonderful technology is that it’s just about impossible to connect to the Internet.

I was able to get on earlier today for just enough time to post to my weblog—and now, many hours later, I’m at a nearby Starbuck’s, since it’s the only place that seems to have working Internet.

I haven’t been able to check my email since Saturday. (There’s a ton! It’s downloading now...)

Anyway, there’s a good chance the networking situation will be better tomorrow. As I recall, last year it was worst on the first day, then after that it was better.

Hyper-connectivity

Hyper-connectivity 01/28/2004 05:38 PM
Today, the hyper-connected are still seen as weird and almost childish.  Conferences still think their value depends on secrecy, as though real-time communication to the outside world would sap their essence.  Before long, though, newspaper articles will poke fun at the people whose only connectivity is their secretary back at the office.
