Smart Shopping Carts

Smart Shopping Carts 07/21/2004 01:14 PM

tdy_holt_marketcart.jpg imageThere are variety of useful things that could be done with an LCD on a shopping cart, and not all of them involve pornography. MSNBC takes a wireless-enable "Shopping Buddy" cart out for a spin and walks away pretty impressed, finding it to make shopping a lot more convenient and, surprisingly, fun. Simple things like being able to place an order in the deli and receive a notice when its ready to pick up sound great. And emailing a shopping list from home to the cart? Sign me up. I have left my shopping list at home literally the last three times I've gone out, and it takes a lot of effort to remember if I needed a 750ml or 1750ml bottle and whether or not we needed whippets.

Union Worried About High Tech Shopping

Union Worried About High Tech Shopping
Carts
12/03/2003 12:18 PM
We've had plenty of stories about high tech shopping carts, but this latest NPR story (found on Politech) is a bit surprising. It starts out normally enough, talking about how everyone loves these new shopping carts that help them find products they want, while also keeping track of how much they're spending. The carts also allow for additional features, such as letting you make "remote" orders to the deli counter while you shop elsewhere in the store. The odd part, though, is in the later part of the segment when they talk to a union representative who complains about how these terrible shopping carts are going to take away jobs. You would think, by this point, unions would understand how technology works, and that if the technology really is useful, their industry is simply going to change. Fighting against it does no good for anyone. It just makes consumers less happy while doing nothing to actually prevent the technology from moving forward. In the meantime, as wonderful as these shopping carts sound, I'd bet there's going to be plenty of job openings for folks to repair them. It wasn't that long ago that shopping carts everywhere started showing up with little "calculators" to help shoppers total up their purchases. I don't think I ever saw one that wasn't smashed. Keeping a fully computerized system running is likely to take a lot more work.

More pointless drivel about horses

More pointless drivel about horses 06/23/2004 05:40 PM
Today, canter! No falling off. Wonderful feeling. Then trip to forest. Understand now why horses used as form of therapy. Start thinking if getting hooked.

Forgotten all definite and indefinite articles. Cannot formulate full sentences. Being very tired. Had two beers with friend. Feels good. Even if missed corporate summer party. But it would've been boring anyway. Always is...

Thinking of starting new blog to supplement this. Memory prosthesis -type. Need better place to keep notes, but must first solve searching problems with JSPWiki.

Untrained people on horses to look for
terrorists near airports
07/26/2004 12:33 PM
Bruce Schneier of Counterpane Security wrote a short piece for The Register about the Houston Airport's ridiculous plan to recruit amateurs to ride around on their horses and patroll the grounds near the airport.
Want to help fight terrorism? Want to be able to stop and detain suspicious characters? Or do you just want to ride your horse on ten miles of trails normally closed to the public? Then you might want to join the George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) Airport Rangers program. That's right. Just fill out a form and undergo a background check, and you too can become a front-line fighter as Houston's airport tries to keep our nation safe and secure. No experience necessary. You don't even have to be a US citizen.
Sounds like a great opportunity for unemployed idiots who drool at the prospect of harassing people but failed the test to become a cop. Link

Forget Trojan Horses, Why Not Convince
Suckers To Spam For You?

Forget Trojan Horses, Why Not Convince
Suckers To Spam For You?
04/21/2004 06:03 AM
It's no secret that a large percentage of spam that goes out these days is sent via home computers who have been infected with a trojan horse that secretly sends out spam from that machine. There's been a lot of buzz recently about how some company took that idea and used it as the basis for its "business model." Instead of sneaking their software onto peoples machines, they would pay gullible people $1/hour to knowingly send out spam from their machines. Wired News is looking into the company and, while they present themselves as legitimate non-spamming marketers, there are plenty of reasons to be skeptical. Beyond the obvious (what spamming company doesn't claim that they're perfectly legitimate, 100% opt-in email marketers?), there are some other big questions. The company wouldn't allowed Wired News to actually speak to anyone using their service - either a customer to send out spam or someone who had received money for spamming. The article also points out that most people who sign up for the service are very likely to get kicked off their ISP for spamming relatively quickly (though, perhaps not as fast as some would like). Not even mentioned is the fact that this could probably open up anyone who agrees to do this to legal liability for the spam they're sending out, since they're now agreeing to send out the spam - even if they don't know the contents of the messages they send. The whole thing sounds pretty sketchy, though, I'm sure some people will sign up. Whether they ever get any money - or just lose their internet access remains to be seen.
