TVEyes, a real-time broadcast search provider, will debut Podscope later this month, making every word within an Internet podcast searchable. Podscope will crawl the web to look for podcasts.  When it finds one, it will create an index against every word within the content.  Users will be able to search for a term or phrase and the program will generate a list of ranked results, providing the most relevant podcasts as well as links to play or download the content. TVEyes has been indexing both radio and television broadcasts since 1999. Podcasts are essentially downloadable radio programs distributed through RSS that can be put onto a digital media music player or iPod.

Yahoo Launch Y!Q, Contextual Search
Option
02/05/2005 09:46 PM
Search engine Yahoo has launched a new tool for users searching online called Y!Q. Similar to existing "related links" options, the tool offers users pages of a similar context to the one the user is viewing. The service is already in operation on Yahoo! News, with examples of stories on George Bush linking to sites on the American president.

Yahoo is offering the service for Internet Explorer users (<a href="http://yq.search.yahoo.com/splash/embed.html">downl oad</a>) and Firefox users (<a href="http://yq.search.yahoo.com/splash/firefox.html">dow nload</a>), letting them do contextual searches without going to Yahoo. Yahoo is also offering code to allow webmasters to <a href="http://yq.search.yahoo.com/splash/embed.html">embed </a>Y!Q in their pages.

Yahoo's new tool is another option for searchers who are becoming startlingly similar to gleeful children receive far too many gifts at Christmas. Yahoo's most recent financial report noted that ad revenues from searches were proving more profitable and important. It, like the other search companies, wants more users and wants them keep on coming back; the problem is a complex one.

It’s difficult to have a system that gains strong user loyalty on search engines; the most successful so far has been Google's simple and effective search results. Google still maintains its 60% market share and is by far the largest of a growing pack. Google today moved their local search tool to the front page of the site; although still only in beta form, the tool has proved successful and effective at return accurate results. As if to do one better, Amazon's version of local search on A9.com adds pictures of shop fronts and streets. Expect more presents from the search companies soon.

Yahoo search engine reaches into
fee-based content
06/17/2005 03:46 PM

Yahoo's search engine is gaining hooks into fee-based content from news providers such as Dow Jones & Co.'s The Wall Street Journal Online and from research providers such as Forrester Research.

Yahoo has introduced a test, or beta, version of a new service called Yahoo Search Subscriptions that indexes fee-based content and makes it searchable, the Sunnyvale, California, company announced Thursday.

However, finding links to this type of content via Yahoo doesn't automatically grant users access to it. If they haven't already, users must subscribe with each provider to view its fee-based content.

The service also indexes free content whose access nonetheless requires users to register with the publisher and enter a username and a password before viewing it, said Tim Mayer, director of product management for Yahoo search technology. Likewise, Yahoo Search Subscriptions also indexes articles that require a one-time fee, he said.

Users can try this beta service at http://search.yahoo.com/subscriptions. They can also test-drive the service by configuring the preferences of the general Yahoo Web search service (http://search.yahoo.com) to include these fee-based results.

In addition to The Wall Street Journal Online and Forrester Research, Yahoo Search Subscriptions also indexes fee-based content from Consumer Union's ConsumerReports.org, TheStreet.com Inc., the Massachusetts Medical Society's New England Journal of Medicine, The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and The Financial Times.

The list is expected to grow. In the coming weeks, the service will include content from Dow Jones Reuters Business Interactive's Factiva, Reed Elsevier's LexisNexis AlaCarte service, The Thomson Corp.'s Thomson Gale, and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).

Yahoo doesn't have a specific goal in terms of the number of content providers it plans to sign up for the service. Instead, the company will use this beta period to see what types of users are drawn to the service and what type of content they are most interested in, Mayer said. Based on usage patterns, Yahoo will then make decisions about how to expand the Search Subscriptions, he said.
