Vertical Handoff Has Liftoff

Vertical Handoff Has Liftoff 11/05/2003 01:12 PM
Industry and academia demonstrate connection handoff across wireless LAN, GPRS, wired LAN on commercial networks: A press release (not included on this site) says that TeliaSonera, Ericsson, Radionet, and the Helsinki University of Technology have demonstrated a seamless handoff across commercial networks. The benefits they cite are absolutely the case: users want uninterrupted services and no monkeying around. Interestingly, if you use NetMotion Wireless software, you can achieve most of this effect today. While you're responsible as a user for changing your connectivity, the NetMotion client and server software maintain the persistent state of the Internet connection....

Successful test liftoff for John
Carmack's XPrize contender craft
06/20/2004 09:36 AM
John Carmack may be best known for the legendary electronic game Doom -- but his latest venture is the development of a space craft to compete in the $10 million Ansari Xprize. A craft built by Carmack's Armadillo Aerospace had a succcessful test flight earlier this week:
"The flight was perfect. It went 131 feet high, and landed less than one foot from the launch point," Carmack reported on his web site. "It can easily do flights three times as long, which may show up some problems before we hit them with the big vehicle."

Armadillo's rocket concept makes use of a hydrogen peroxide monopropellant.

Carmack said the vehicle's auto-land system worked perfectly, softly settling down on its tail section. "I had tried several algorithms on the simulator before settling on this one, and it behaved exactly the same in reality, which is always a pleasant surprise."

Shadow Ops: Red Mercury

Shadow Ops: Red Mercury 06/16/2004 04:46 PM

Atari shipped Shadow Ops: Red Mercury today for Xbox. Served up by developer Zombie Studios, the game is by all reckoning a generic one-man army FPS. Which isn't surprising, given that Zombie's last inspiration came from the generic one-man and one-woman army movie Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever. Zombie was making a PS2 game based on the movie, but the project was cancelled when, in an unfortunate accident, the movie totally sucked.

Atari is pitching the game as an "interactive blockbuster", with a modern military thriller storyline involving a trans-continental hunt for a stolen nuclear device. This blockbuster is PG-13, or in videogame parlance, T for Teen, which means no blood and lots of explosions.

Back to Mercury After 30 Years!

Back to Mercury After 30 Years! 07/10/2004 11:02 AM
“MESSENGER is scheduled to launch from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla., during a 13-day period that opens August 2, 2004. It will return to Earth for a gravity boost in August 2005, then fly past Venus twice, in October 2006 and June 2007. The spacecraft uses the tug of Venus’ gravity to resize and rotate its trajectory closer to Mercury’s orbit. Three Mercury flybys, each followed about two months later by a course correction maneuver, put MESSENGER in position to enter Mercury orbit in March 2011. During the flybys – set for January 2008, October 2008 and September 2009 – MESSENGER will map nearly the entire planet in color, image most of the areas unseen by Mariner 10, and measure the composition of the surface, atmosphere and magnetosphere. It will be the first new data from Mercury in more than 30 years – and invaluable for planning MESSENGER’s yearlong orbital mission.”
