More on RSS and gzip compression

More on RSS and gzip compression 01/04/2004 06:58 PM
Ted Leung follows up to my post from yesterday with more about RSS and gzip compression.

“So I’ve been looking at the statistics, and it’s not looking good out there folks,” Ted writes. “As far as gzipped feeds go, about 10% of the feeds in my NNW (about 900) are gzipped.”

Compression, conditional GET

Compression, conditional GET 07/19/2004 02:55 PM

Jason Cook writes for WebMonkey about gzip compression and conditional GET for RSS and Atom feeds.

Both are important for lowering bandwidth use. If I had to rank them, I’d say conditional GET is more important—but I find that there are lots of sites, even some very popular sites, that still don’t support conditional GET.

It looks like most (if not all) of the popular weblog hosting systems support conditional GET, which is very cool. It appears to be mainly custom content management systems used by one or just a few sites that tend not to support it. You can almost count on lack of support if the RSS or Atom feed is generated live by a script instead of being served as a static file.

(Note that I intend no disrespect for people and organizations that develop their own systems—I myself use a custom system written in PHP.)

RSS Bandwidth and Gzip compression

RSS Bandwidth and Gzip compression 01/03/2004 04:35 PM
There are several ways to cut down on the amount of bandwidth your RSS feeds use.

The very best way is to make sure your server returns 304 Not Modified responses. (See HTTP Conditional Get for RSS Hackers for more details.)

But today I’m talking about another method (which should be used in addition to conditional Get): gzip compression.

The idea is simple: the server compresses the feed before returning it to your newsreader. This means less bandwidth is used because fewer bytes are transferred.

One of the nice things about this is that if a given newsreader doesn’t support gzip compression, a server will return an uncompressed feed, so you’re not locking anybody out. But it turns out that lots of newsreaders do support gzip compression, so it really is worth the effort. (Ted Leung has been maintaining a list of which newsreaders support it.)

Today I (finally) turned on gzip compression for my feeds. (Here’s a handy page you can use to
check for gzip compression on any URL.)

Since my feeds are generated by PHP, I used Dean Allen’s super-easy instructions for turning on gzip compression. If your feeds are static files (which is probably the best choice) then you can probably use Apache’s mod_gzip or mod_deflate.
