Susan Crawford did not have a good time at a Bach concert yesterday. I wouldn't mention it except she writes about it so amusingly. I'm reminded of a conversation my friend Joe Mahoney had with another friend of mine, Tim Anderson. According to Joe, who is an amazing musician, it went like this: Joe: Can you imagine? Bach had to write a cantata every week! Tim: Not only that. He had to write a Bach cantata. (Joe has a great post from November about the joy of growing up with a son and his son Quentin's manic performacne in "Cinderella."...

Bidding For A Role In A Really Bad Movie

Bidding For A Role In A Really Bad Movie 05/10/2004 04:31 AM
A German director (who has never actually directed a movie before) is getting ready to shoot a new movie where all of the actors bid for their roles on eBay. In other words, rather than choosing good actors, they've chosen actors who have money to waste. If you have an impressive enough memory, you might realize that this is not a new concept. Four years ago, Adam Rifkin (director of such non-hits as The Chase, Mouse Hunt and Small Soldiers) hatched a nearly identical plan. Despite some early press coverage and backing from Blockbuster (who promised to carry videotapes of the movie - no matter how dreadful it turned out to be), I can't seem to find any news about what happened to this project. It certainly doesn't look like it was ever completed.

Will A Bidding Process Be Applied To
Jobs?

Will A Bidding Process Be Applied To
Jobs?
09/17/2004 02:31 PM
Roland Piquepaille writes "Two U.S. hospitals, one in Ayer, Massachusetts, and another one in Chicago, have found an innovative way to deal with nursing shortage. They post shift openings and the highest hourly rate they're willing to pay. Then, the nurses bid online for these extra shifts. The lowest bidders get the shifts and are notified by e-mail. The software behind the process, named eShift and marketed by FlexEstaff, is raising eyebrows at nurses associations. Still, FlexEstaff is negotiating with 8 more hospitals. This bidding process is almost certainly a good thing for the hospitals, but is it good for the nurses? Will we soon other industries adopt auction systems? Imagine a company telling you, "Hey, you want to make some extra dollars by building this car or writing this piece of software? Name your price, and you'll make some more cash." What do you think of this bidding process? Read more before posting your comments. Techdirt carried a similar story back in Decemmber 2003, "Techdir t:Nurses Bidding On Their Work Schedule, Hourly Pay Rate. But it didn't answer my basic question: what will happen if this process is adopted by other industries?"

AT&T Wireless: Bidding War, Anyone?
(BusinessWeek Online)
01/23/2004 05:21 PM
BusinessWeek Online - AT&T Wireless Services Inc. (NYSE:AWE - News) is anything but an industry darling. Dogged by mediocre customer-service ratings, the third largest of six national cellular service providers has seen subscriber growth slow to a snail's pace. The stock has plummeted 70% in four years -- though it has rebounded in recent months thanks to strong cash flow and takeover speculation. The latest financials are weak, too: On Jan. 22, the Seattle company reported a net loss of $84 million for the fourth quarter, on revenues of $3.9 billion.
