The Internationalization of the Web

The Internationalization of the Web 07/18/2004 06:34 PM

It's about time that the English-centric nature of the web start to change. In my Feed InBox today alone - I found articles on:

- It's Open Source from now on - Malaysia government prefers open source
- Br azilians Dominate Orkut, By The Numbers - following up on the Orkut scandal - which is just as prelevant on Fotolog and Friendster - as well
- Brazilians outnumber Yanquis 2-1 - Cory even is in on it!

Io studio Italiano in Scuola und Ich studieren Deutsch in schule aber - I am still an English speaker.

But to be an International Citizen - I think the most important thing to realize is that everyone has their native tounge, and then they learn additional langauges. It seems that only American programmers truely understand this - but believe me stupid ass Americans mainly only know English.

Even drunk, slovenly Brits know second and thrid languages. Yet Americans think Mexicans are stupid - if they don't speak English. The web has been the great equalizer via it's English-centric approach - but it's heartening to see key white papers, presentations, Wikipedias's and now - social networks - available in some language other than English.

They have a saying on Madison Ave. - half of all the money is not here. Amercians need to start learning more languages and I'm taking python or perl here.

Perhaps it's because I'm planning for my European roadshow - and I'm thinking of getting geselig.

Accidental Internationalization

Accidental Internationalization 03/31/2005 07:20 AM
New businesses used to target their userbase geographically. However, thanks to the internet, it's sometimes impossible to prepare for where your offering might take off. Wired News is taking a look at some web-based services that have received a ton of use from foreign users they weren't even targeting. The best (and probably most well known) example is Google's Orkut -- which now has 66% of its users from Brazil (only 10% are American). What's interesting is that this number keeps increasing. A few months ago, a similar article noted that Brazilians made up something like 40% of all Orkut users. Of course Google's Orkut is based in the US and never did anything special to target Brazilian users. For some companies it becomes a challenge: how do they deal with users they never expected? Some startups now realize that they have to prepare for internationalization from the very beginning, while others are simply ignoring certain geographical markets. Either way, it's a very different type of challenge for young internet companies.

Internationalization and Translation Issues

I'm getting a huge push on this now.  And I understand the demand / need for it.  Trust me we're working on it.  If you want to pitch in on the user interface translation, drop me an email and I'll be in touch when we're ready to start on it.  I'm working on getting language categorization in very quickly results NOT in your native language can be filtered out of the result set.  And proper indexing, etc.

Wikipedia : 1 Million Articles

Wikipedia : 1 Million Articles 09/20/2004 07:07 PM
News gurus The Inquirer note that online encyclopaedia, Wikipedia, has now over a million pages of content.

Formed just under 3 years ago, the site has exploded in content and usefulness. With just 200,000 pages as of January this year, over the last 9 months they've seen a five fold increase and a few server pains to boot. It's unique method of content creation has also been key to it's success. Users submit data and build up subjects, often with startling levels of detail. Data can then be edited / updated by other users as time goes on, keeping content fresh and up to date.

Although the site has enjoyed much success in the technology community due to it's free / GPL friendly nature, traditional educational establishments have been urged not to use the site, with some groups suggesting that it is "un-authoritative". Indeed, one techie went on to test exactly how good Wikipedia users were at weeding out false information: the results were poor, with none of the changes being noticed.

Sadly, although Wikipedia list a reference for The Inquirer, the site doesn't feature yours truly - Neowin. A page placed on the site today was hours later marked for deletion; better check it soon, as it might not be there tomorrow.

Wikipedia breaks 10^6 articles 09/20/2004 02:41 AM
Cory Doctorow: The free/open Wikipedia encyclopedia project just posted its 1,000,000th article.
The Wikimedia Foundation announced today the creation of the one millionth article in Wikipedia, its project to create a free, open-content, online encyclopedia (Wikipedia.org (http://en.wikipedia.org)). Started in January 2001, Wikipedia is currently both the world's largest encyclopedia and its fastest-growing, with articles under active development in over 100 languages. Nearly 2,500 new articles are added to Wikipedia each day, along with ten times that number of updates to existing articles.
