“Researchers from the University of Cambridge in England, the
National University of Singapore and the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology have devised a relatively simple way to transfer data
between quantum bits, or qubits. The method is a step toward building
quantum computers, which have the potential to solve certain types of
very large problems many orders of magnitude faster than is possible
using classical computers.”…
Which Hotel Chains Have Wi-Fi?04/08/2005 12:16 PM Travel columnist provides overview and links: A Washington Post
travel columnist answers a reader's question about using free Wi-Fi at
hotels with a long list with links and phone numbers of the chains
that have extensive free installations of Wi-Fi. Also noted is SBC's
statistic that 25 percent of travelers plan to use "wireless
electronics" (one assumes Wi-Fi) while on the road....

doing the things a particle can04/09/2004 04:08 PM I had a fantastic time at the convention yesterday. I performed
material from Just A Geek and Dancing Barefoot to a
mostly-full theatre, and I think it was my best performance to date. I
took material from both books, and I put it together in what I hoped
would be a dramatically interesting order.

Intel adds bolts for Microsoft's chains
Intel adds bolts for Microsoft's chains06/05/2005 11:10 PM Intel apparently has added "Microsoft-flavored" DRM to its Pentium D
and 945 chipset. Hannibal at ArsTechnica guesses: From what I can
tell, DTCP is essentially a protocol that sits on top of TCP/IP and
provides DRM by ensuring that both endpoints in an IP connection are
trusted before transmitted protected content. I imagine that Intel's
DTCP support is some kind of hardware-level means of enabling the
strict enforcement of this endpoint authentication in software. As to
what specific form this enablement takes, only further digging on our
part and more revelations from Intel will tell. This would,
apparently, prevent unwanted...

BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | Scientists find mystery particle
Sun is doing some research to see if they can
effectively create computer chips that don't connect to the board via
wires. Instead, they are planning on creating chips that pass data
wirelessly via induction.
"It is not that on chip wires are evil. It is just that
they are large," Drost said. "The number of pins to get to the outside
world has gone up only 5 (percent) to 10 percent a year."
By contrast, proximity communication relies on capacitive
coupling--the ability of two electrically charged devices close to
each other to interact. Transmitters on one chip can send signals to
another. These signals are then amplified. A much higher number of
transmitter/receiver pairs than pins can be inserted in a specific
area, which allows for more simultaneous connections.
The problem becomes how to keep chips in alignment. If you have
transmitters and receivers that tightly packed, then even minor
vibration will misalign the inputs, a problem that physical pins don't
have to deal with.
Wi-Fi With Wires11/10/2003 10:54 PM d&name=News&file=article&sid=672&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0 ">The
companies developing technology that uses existing electrical wiring
in a house to build a network seem doomed for failure: When Wi-Fi is
cheap, easy and better, why bother using one of these HomePlug
solutions? With Wi-Fi you can hang out anywhere and get online,
instead of only next to an outlet. Seems like a no-brainer. Before
Wireless Distribution System (WDS) became widespread this year, a
HomePlug bridge might have made sense to avoid running wire between
access points. That's now moot....
