slightly unfair but powerful re
joinder to President Bush's jokes about weapons of mass
destruction. Media is in the hands of everyone, and people are going
to use it to hold powerful people -- including media people, such as
the Washington correspondents who found Bush's performance so
hilarious -- to account.

Home network complexity challenges
customer satisfactionStudy finds that
installation complexity – quantified by
“help desk” calls – reduces both
satisfaction with and brand loyalty to
home networking products and services
09/04/2004 02:40 AMCustomer satisfaction and brand loyalty regarding home networking
equipment are related directly to product ease of installation and
operation, according to Parks Associates’ Primary Perspectives:
Complexity and Customer Satisfaction in the Networked Home. The study
finds that satisfaction declines precipitously – as much as 25% – if a
customer is required to make two or more service calls to install and
operate home network equipment. Progress has been made in simplifying
these products through standard device drivers and graphics-based
installation wizards, but in order to secure long-term success in this
market, developers and providers should continue devising new ways to
reduce the complexity of home networking solutions. [PRWEB Sep 4,

Humor alert
01/07/2004 06:50 PMThe other day, I wrote
a post saying
weblogs are ruining Google. I hate to do this, I hate to explain a
joke, but it seems there's been too much confusion. No, weblogs are
not ruining Google. I was kidding because, see, this is what people
do: they search for something on Google, a weblog is one of top
responses, and then they piss and moan about weblogs ruining Google,
etc. Do I need to resort to writing "J/K" next to all silly posts?
The other funny thing -- at least to me -- is that both times I used
the expression "text wrap" in my query, rather than the more common
"word wrap." So it extra made sense that Google would return my post
to me. And funnier still was the fact that I'd forgotten I'd already
looked for a text wrap plugin for Eclipse months ago. So you see the
levels of humor here? Did you ever suspect megnut posts had so much
depth to them?

Neurology of humor
06/21/2004 12:35 PMCognitive neuroscientists at Dartmouth College have shown that the
part of your brain that "gets" a joke is not the same as the region
that deems it funny or not. To test their hypothesis, the researchers
conducted functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) on subjects
while they watched Seinfeld and The Simpsons. From a Scientific
American report on the study:
"The investigators found that instances of humor detection
lit up the left inferior frontal and posterior temporal cortices--the
left side of the brain. Humor appreciation, in contrast, led to spikes
in activity in the emotional areas deeper inside--specifically, in the
bilateral regions of the insular cortex and the amygdala... Past
research has shown the left inferior frontal cortex to be involved in
reconciling ambiguous meanings with prior knowledge. And ambiguity,
incongruity and surprise are key elements in many jokes."
Still, the results are preliminary. When SciAm asked an outside
psychologist for his expert opinion on the research, he commented: "If
some people don't find The Simpsons funny, it's premature to say that
they have a defective frontal lobe."
Of course, he's wrong.

The military gets it
The military gets it
05/10/2004 04:09 PMFor a look at how the professional military views the Abu Ghraib
outrages, see the The Army Times, the unofficial voice of the Army,
which today called for the relief of Defense Secretary Rumsfeld and
chairman of the Joint Chiefs Meyers: There is no excuse for the
behavior displayed by soldiers in the now-infamous pictures and an
even more damning report by Army Maj. Gen. Antonio Taguba. Every
soldier involved should be ashamed. But while responsibility begins
with the six soldiers facing criminal charges, it extends all the way
up the chain of command to the highest reaches of the military
hierarchy and its civilian leadership. The entire affair is a failure
of leadership from start to finish. From the moment they are captured,
prisoners are hooded, shackled and isolated. The message to the
troops: Anything goes... Army commanders in Iraq bear responsibility
for running a prison where there was no legal adviser to the
commander, and no ultimate responsibility taken for the care and
treatment of the prisoners. Gen. Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint
Chiefs, also shares in the shame. Myers asked “60 Minutes II” to hold
off reporting news of the scandal because it could put U.S. troops at
risk. But when the report was aired, a week later, Myers still hadn’t
read Taguba’s report, which had been completed in March. Defense
Secretary Donald Rumsfeld also failed to read the report until after
the scandal broke in the media. ... This was not just a failure of
leadership at the local command level. This was a failure that ran
straight to the top. Accountability here is essential — even if that
means relieving top leaders from duty in a time of war. The Army gets
it, but Bush still doesn't. The fish rots from the head....

Military To Jam GPS Signals
06/14/2004 03:33 AMIf you're out on a boat on the east coast this week, don't expect to
rely on your GPS navigation system. It appears that the government
isn't just interested in
jamming
mobile phones for military reasons - but are now
testing systems to jam GPS signals along the east coast as
well. They've been trying to get the message out, but it's likely
that some people out on their boats may find themselves a bit less
sure of where they are. Of course, it was partly because of this very
threat of US jamming of GPS signals that Europe has been working on
their own satellite location system, Galileo - which will be
independent of military control. This also might mean that any
jamming by the US of GPS won't much matter once Galileo is up and
running.

Internet Addiction Gets Your Out Of The

Internet Addiction Gets Your Out Of The
Military?
08/03/2004 12:32 PMMany stories about "internet addiction" have been based on some random
psychologist who was mostly trying to drum up some new (and
potentially lucrative) business. However, people continue to take it
seriously. The latest, amazingly enough, is that the Finnish military
is
letting people get out of military service if they're
addicted to the internet. Apparently "young men miss their
computers too much to cope with their compulsory six months in the
forces." However, the Commander-Captain of conscription doesn't seem
to have much of a problem with young men staying home and playing
games instead of serving their country: "For people who play
(Internet) games all night and don't have any friends, don't have any
hobbies, to come into the army is a very big shock." Of course,
they're not completely out of it: "They get sent home for three years
and after that they have to come back and we ask if they are OK ...
they will have had time to grow up." I wonder if the cases of
"internet addiction" will increase, now that kids know they can skip
out on service and play games instead.
