Blueserker passes on information from an article in
Singapore's Asia One about three students from Temasek Polytechnic who
have figured out a way to disable the camera function of select Nokia
phones via Bluetooth. While the concept itself is interesting - enter
a 'no camera' zone, and your phone disables itself automagically - the
fact that Nokia's Bluetooth implementation allows a remote user to
disable functions is probably the more immediate issue here. The
affected phones are the 6600 and the 7210 - an attempt to shut down a
7650 failed.

Kuwait City - Kuwait Towers
03/20/2003 07:44 PM Wonder
about those towers behind Wolf Blitzer? I have, as I'm sure you
have, seen a lot of the three sculptural towers behind the various
newscasters transmitting from Kuwait City. They're quite
beautiful --
award
winning -- water towers (holding 4500 cubic meters). Built in 1979
by swedes, they are the largest and most visible part of a 100,000
cubic meter water storage system, which also includes the
mushrooms along the beaches.

Google’s Gmail has quietly kicked the teeth out of other
email services like Yahoo and Hotmail in what I like to call
“POP value” (Perceived popular value). What Gmail does not
offer in numbers, they make up for in crafty feature add-ons. Google
has now included the ability to import Yahoo, Hotmail and even AOL
email contacts on over to your Gmail account. The funny thing is, this
is the digital equivalent to having Yahoo/MSN…

Cory Doctorow:

Tom sez, "I took some photos at Boeing Surplus today. It's a store
that Boeing operates in
Kent, Washington, about twenty minutes south of Seattle. They sell all
sorts of
weird and strange stuff, from gear used in the construction of jet
liners to office
chairs to old employee nameplates. Photos and cameras are strictly
prohibited, so I
was lucky to make it out with these photos that give a small sense of

New, sneaky, evil PayPal spoof.
12/28/2003 06:58 PMMike Outmesguine points us
to yet another new riff on the classic PayPal scam (click thumbnail

I got this email that looks like it came from PayPal. Of course, I
didn't believe it for a second. But I'm sure others would. Digging
deeper, the URL redirects people to a site in China that uses the IE
URL spoof to seem like it's sitting at paypal.com. Insidious! I
reported this to Paypal and they confirmed it's a spoof site. Here's
the breakdown:

Toys R Us' sneaky trick loses in court
Toys R Us' sneaky trick loses in court
12/11/2003 05:00 PMEli the Bearded says: "This story of Louisiana winning a court tax
battle is interesting to see the types of tax evasion big companies
use.
"In this case Toys R Us advertises using a giraffe mascot named
Geoffrey. But TRU does not own the rights to that mascot, instead
Geoffrey, Inc (a TRU subsidiary) owns them. So the toy store
"licenses" the trademark from Geoffrey, Inc, at a hefty rate, then
calls that a business expense and deducts from its pre-tax income.
Since GI isn't a Louisiana company, TRU argued that it doesn't need to
pay LA taxes on it's income. The judge disagreed."

08/27/2004 01:58 PMHere is a very worrisome problem concerning fair use. It has to do

Adware Company Buys Sneaky
Distributor... But Reasoning Is
Questionable
04/08/2005 03:15 PMMany of the various adware companies that use sneaky install methods
often hide behind the cover of their "affiliates." They say that it's
really their affiliates who use a sneaky install process, and
therefore, it's not their fault at all -- even though the adware
companies often turn a blind eye on abuses. In the past few months,
the various adware companies have all been claiming that they're
reforming their ways and are trying to stop dealing with these types
of affiliates -- which is the party line well known adware provider
180Solutions is using to explain their
decision to buy up their
largest distributor, whose reputation isn't squeaky clean when it
comes to sneaky installs. Of course, this doesn't seem to make much
sense. If 180Solutions is upset about CDT, why not just kick them out
of the affiliate program? Why
buy out the company and reward
its owners for being sneaky and (supposedly) getting 180Solutions into
all this trouble they don't think they deserve?

02/12/2004 01:59 PMWhen players accept the terms of service for an Osama Bin Laden game,
a piggyback program sends advertising to everyone on their buddy

On Wednesday, Buddylinks' Web site contained a message denying the
program is a virus. The home page also makes no mention that the
program would in the future send out additional advertisements using
the same method.
"Our games interact with instant messengers by promoting the game
among the user's network of buddies,'' it reads. "Please understand,
our flash games are in no way a virus. We simply combine peer-to-peer,
social networking, and instant messaging into one spectacular
technology.''
