07/30/2004 05:12 PMDan Bricklin has a post on what we're starting to learn about event
blogging. Dan's doing a service by turning this into a topic... In
passing, Dan responds to Charles Coopers' post at CNET. Dan says that
we're only at the beginning of learning about event blogging and about
the relationship of blogging and journalism. To this I would only add:
Cooper is judging blogging as if it were wannabe journalism. What I
was doing at the Convention wasn't journalism. I'm not sure what to
call what I was doing, except maybe "blogging." Was it worthwhile even
thought it wasn't...

09/07/2004 08:01 PMDan has written a thoughtful essay that tries to help us learn from
accidents and extreme, intentional accidents (= terrorism). He looks
at Charles Perrow's Normal Accidents and the 9/11 Commission Report
(which he has excerpted helpfully here). Dan draws too many insights
to summarize, but the need for providing flexible, two-way
communication systems so that non-officials can act effectively leaps
out at me. (By coincidence, Dewayne Hendricks today talked about how a
couple of strategically positioned repeaters were able to provide a
forest fire command center with wifi communications access.)...

07/21/2004 11:10 PMDan has a lovely piece about blogging and observing the Convention. I
find I have no coherent expectations about it or what I'll write
about. I bounce from thinking that I'll react to the Big Speeches to
reporting small anecdotes to reading the clips of Mailer's 1960s
political coverage and thinking "Take away the talent and incredible
insight, and what's he got that I don't got?" I can't even anticipate
how cynical or filled with spirit I'll be; I am, after all, perfectly
capable of crying at a good political speech. (It's hope that turns on

Malcolm Bricklin Is Back
Malcolm Bricklin Is Back
01/03/2005 07:37 PMMalcolm
Bricklin is
a key figure in my memory because he built and sold what I thought was
the coolest car on the planet back in my teen years. The plastic
bodied, gull-winged car that bore his name — the SV-1 — was ahead of its
time (early '70s) in both styling and safety, but bombed in the
market. I remember seeing the machine at a local dealership, and going
ga-ga over it. I rode my bike through the lot as often and as close as
I dared — usually getting chased off by the salesguys —
collected everything about the car that a young teen could lay claim
to, doodled pictures of it all over my school notebooks, and made
hand-drawn posters of the thing. Alas, the New Brunswick automaker
went bankrupt after producing around 3000 vehicles. I think I cried
the day I heard about that.
Fast forward to 2005, and Malcom is in
the news again, this time for cutting a deal to import cars to
North America from China. He's got a bit of experience in the import
business; he was the first to bring the Subaru (in the 1960's) and
Yugo (in the 1980's) nameplates to North America. This time he and his
new company — Visionary Vehicles, LLC — will be importing
five models built by the Chinese government-owned Chery
Automobiles. (There is a company website, but beware;
it's dog-slow and mostly in Chinese and mangled English.)
The Chery's are said to be high quality and low cost machines, with
10-year, 100,000-mile warranties. No word yet on where they will be
sold or what they will be called.
Truth be told, I'm less excited with the Chery than the memories
that I have of the Bricklin SV-1.

While much of the blogging world has been ga-ga over

As eagle-eyed
reader Thomas Shebest pointed out to me, it looks as if Apple has
removed the Mini (car) from its BMWYourIpod page. Either the Mini
isn't supported any longer, or, more likely, someone within BMW's
marketing department didn't want to dillute the Beemer brand with
their low-end cousin. Whichever -- it's still been removed from the
site.

12/03/2003 03:46 PMLiz Goes Beyond Blogging
Liz Goes Beyond Blogging
11/04/2003 08:17 PMI haven't been blogging much because I just found a wireless hot
spot (albeit for $8.95 a day), but now Liz Lawley is speaking and I'm
happy to say that she is just as interesting in person as she is on
her blog. Her topic now is "Beyond Blogging: Where Next
with Blogs and Blogging."
Liz is on a campaign to stop using the word "blog" because she
thinks it's an ugly word, so she's gone back to using the term
"weblog." This, of course, contrasts with Terry Huwe's comment
in the
current issue of Computers in Libraries that anything
called "blogging" has to be a little fun (sorry it's not available
online). At this morning's keynote, the panel referred to F. Scott
Fitzgerald's quote about being able to keep two contradictory thoughts
at the same time, so now I feel like I've come full circle for the
day.
"How many of you with you could Google your office? I can Google my
brain (via her blog)."
"Bloggers are not a unified community, nor are blogs a unified
commodity."
"The term "weblog" will become meaningless because the software can
be used so differently and for different purposes. Just because
something is called a "book" doesn't mean it's like every other book.
We need to start thinking of this as a medium."
"Blogs aren't really on a topic anymore than people are. In the
long term, categorization isn't going to get us what I want because
you can't categorize blogs, but microcontent (like the Internet Topic Exchange)
will."
Liz doesn't use an aggregator for reading blogs because she likes
the visual interface of blogs. She likes the binding and feel of
books, she likes the native view of blogs.
Liz showed All
Consuming and noted that can buy the book or find who's been
writing about it. It's too bad she couldn't say you could see if your
library owns the book.
Liz is highlighting the community aspect of blogs, especially via
comments. Personally, I think it's too bad that libraries don't
understand this and always turn off comments. She's also bravely
explaining trackback. I say "bravely" because it's already been a long
day with four other programs about blogging (yay - a blogging track at
a librarian conference!), so I know a lot of those folks are already
on overload. I'm still glad she's mentioning it, though, and hey, she
is discussing the risks.
Oooh - she said "wiki!" Oooh - and it's the Atom wiki!
Daring, daring, brave Miss Liz! You'll be answering all dem questions
about wikis now. :-) "Ego can be a real barrier to collaborative
development." Liz says, "Wikis scare librarians. A lot." Heh.
Ha - she just created a page on the Atom wiki called "GuidetoSite
and she's building a page. "This is both terrifying and exhilerating
to people who deal with information. I'm still not sure which side I
come down on."
How do we generate content collectively at the same time? Liz
started her blog last year after she read Dan
Gillmor's site as he was posting them to his blog. He included
notes and links that made her re-think her interpretation of the
sessions.
The first question after Liz's presentation is about security and
password-protecting blogs. I feel very confident in saying that this
is the first question asked after every blog presentation at a library
conference. We are sooooo paranoid. The second question is about
building community, especially as noted in Liz's class. Now we're
getting somewhere.
