Bill Gates: Free Culture advocates = Commies
In an interview on news.com, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates
described free culture advocates as a "modern-day sort of communists."
Well now.
Q: "In recent years, there's been a lot of people
clamoring to reform and restrict intellectual-property rights. It
started out with just a few people, but now there are a bunch of
advocates saying, 'We've got to look at patents, we've got to look at
copyrights.' What's driving this, and do you think
intellectual-property laws need to be reformed?
A: "No, I'd say that of the world's economies, there's more that
believe in intellectual property today than ever. There are fewer
communists in the world today than there were. There are some new
modern-day sort of communists who want to get rid of the incentive for
musicians and moviemakers and software makers under various guises.
They don't think that those incentives should exist.

If I had the time, and the money, I'd do the deep analysis that it
would take to explain to myself why it is I constantly hope to be
surprised by Mr. Gates. Yet I never am.
It's one thing to read this sort of thing from a studio exec, or
head of a record label -- surrounded as they are by the sort that
surround them. But the people I've met at Microsoft are miles beyond
this sort of silliness. Does Mr. Gates not even talk to them?

Gates: Microsoft Will Build
Interoperable Software By Design
Gates: Microsoft Will Build
Interoperable Software By Design
02/05/2005 09:46 PMIn an email to business chiefs made public today, Bill Gates, Chairman
of Microsoft, discussed the companies plans to make their software
more interoperable with other systems.
"
Interoperability is more pragmatic than other
approaches, such as attempting to make all systems compatible at
the code level, focusing solely on adding new layers of middleware
that try to make all systems look and act the same, or seeking to make
different systems interchangeable. With a common understanding of
basic protocols, different software can interact smoothly with little
or no specific knowledge of each other. The Internet is perhaps the
most obvious example of this kind of interoperability, where any piece
of software can connect and exchange data as long as it adheres to the
key protocols.
Simply put, interoperability is a proven approach for dealing with the
diversity and heterogeneity of the marketplace. Today I want to focus
on two major thrusts of Microsoft’s product interoperability strategy:
First, we continue to support customers’ needs for software that works
well with what they have today. Second, we are working with the
industry to define a new generation of software and Web services based
on eXtensible Markup Language (XML), which enables software to
efficiently share information and opens the door to a greater degree
of "interoperability by design" across many different kinds
of software.
Our goal is to harness all the power inherent in modern (and not so
modern) business software, and enable them to work together so that
the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. We want to further
eliminate friction among heterogeneous architectures and applications
without compromising their distinctive underlying
capabilities."
Gates continued to talk about how Microsoft planned to implement these
ideas, and how it already had; Gates pointed to Office 2003 as an
example of the company making use of XML technology. He also made the
point that "
interoperability is also confused with open source
software". Microsoft face tough competition from Linux based
products which are open source and allow users to modify the
underlying system code. Part of the recent European Union judgement on
Microsoft involved making the company make it easier for other
software vendors to inter opt with their products. Previous messages
from Gates delivered in a similar manner have proved to be major
policy changes for Microsoft.

10/31/2002 11:26 AMSystems software research has become a sideline to the
excitement in the computing industry.
When did you last see an exciting noncommercial

Ironically, at a time when computing is almost the definition
of innovation, research in both software and hardware at
universities and much of industry is becoming insular,
ossified, and irrelevant.
There are many reasons, some avoidable, some endemic.
There may be ways to improve the situation, but they will
require a communitywide

Abstract:
Early contributions to the academic
literature on free/libre and open source software (F/LOSS) movements
have been directed primarily at identifying the motivations that
account for the sustained and often intensive involvement of many
people in this non-contractual and unremunerated productive activity.
This issue has been particularly prominent in economists'
contributions to the literature, and it reflects a view that
widespread voluntary participation in the creation of economically
valuable goods that is to be distributed without charge constitutes a
significant behavioral anomaly. Undoubtedly, the motivations of F/LOSS
developers deserve to be studied more intensively, but not because
their behaviors are unique, or historically unprecedented. In this
essay we argue that other aspects of the "open source" phenomenon are
just as intriguing, if not more so, and possibly are also more
consequential topics for economic analysis. We describe the
re-focusing and re-direction of empirical and theoretical research in
an integrated international project (based at Stanford
University/SIEPR) that aims at better understanding a set of less
widely discussed topics: the modes of organization, governance and
performance of F/LOSS development -- viewed as a collective
distributed mode of production.. We discuss of the significance of
tackling those questions in order to assess the potentialities of the
"open source way of working" as a paradigm for a broader class of
knowledge and information-goods production, and conclude with
proposals for the trajectory of future research along that line.
