Although Redmond is traditionally known for its closed formats and code, Gates said communication between applications is critical for business. He also took a swipe at open source, saying such development hinders interoperability.

Painless prick

Painless prick 08/19/2004 11:42 AM
sonoprep-enlarged Approved by the FDA yesterday, the SonoPrep blasts the skin with painless ultrasonic energy to make it more permeable. The SonoPrep technology, developed by MIT researchers, uses low-frequency, ultrasonic energy to push open tiny channels in the skin for fluids to be extracted and delivered.
"A painless 15-second treatment by the new device, followed by an application of lidocaine cream, will anesthetize the skin in five minutes. By itself, lidocaine takes one hour to work...Because the method is simple and painless, and speeds up the action of lidocaine—a topical anesthetic commonly used in pediatrics and on critically ill adults and children who must endure repeated needle sticks—it could become standard procedure in doctor’s offices and hospitals. Another use would be before painful procedures such as angiography, balloon angioplasty, and the insertion of venous catheters."
The scientists predict that in the next five years, the same ultrasonic technique could be used to take the prickly pain out of routine vaccinations. Link

Microneedles To Provide Painless,
Continuous Diabetes Monitoring
06/08/2004 12:36 PM

microneedles.jpg imageEngineers at the University of California, Berkeley have developed a way to create silicon microneedles -- using the same lithographic techniques used to create computer processors -- which can be used to create continuous monitoring devices for diabetics that don't require finger sticking or sub-dermally planted sensors. The microneedles sit on top of the skin, penetrating deeply enough to reach the fluid between cells (which can be tested for blood sugar levels), but not deeply enough to hit nerves or blood vessels. UC Berkeley is negotiating deals to license the microneedles to medical equipment manufacturers.

Pure VoIP Won't Be Regulated, Phone-Like
VoIP Might Be
02/12/2004 02:16 PM
As expected, the FCC ruled on the Pulver VoIP petition today, and gave something of a split decision. They claim that "pure" VoIP systems shouldn't be regulated, since they're just like email or any other internet application. However, they're reserving judgment on VoIP systems that more resemble regular phone service, such as Vonage that touch on the PSTN. This seems like something of a cop out, and may be difficult to sustain over time. Most of the "pure" VoIP systems are offering (or planning to offer) gateways that let them connect to the telephone system. Where do they fall along the regulatory spectrum? This would take away the incentive of VoIP providers to connect to regular phone service, creating two different levels of phone service, rather than connecting the two and leading to a more orderly migration. Of course, it still remains to be seen what sorts of regulations they will include for PSTN-connected VoIP. Chances are, they're talking about adding in 911 service and phone-tapping abilities.

Zombie Networks for Rent

Zombie Networks for Rent 07/07/2004 04:31 PM

Home PCs rented out in sabotage racket: This is just hideous. Now they have "zombie brokers" that will rent you a zombie network they've created.

Vast networks of home computers are being rented out without their owners' knowledge to spammers, fraudsters and digital saboteurs, security experts say.

The terminals have been infected by a computer virus, turning them into "zombies" — slaves to the commands of a malicious and unseen controller.

For more information on what they're doing with these machines, see this post.

Rent To Own

Rent To Own 02/05/2005 10:16 PM

Is music something you own or something you rent? While the music subscription approach has grown in recent years, far more music fans have opted to buy songs by the track, a business model popularized by Apple Computer Inc. iTunes Music Store and its hugely successful iPod portable player.

But the release late last year of new copy-protection software from Microsoft may begin to change that. The software frees subscribers to move their rented tracks from their computers to certain portable music players. The system works by essentially putting a timer on the tracks loaded on the player. Every time the user connects the player to the PC and the music service, the player automatically checks whether the user's subscription is still in effect. Songs stop playing if the subscription has lapsed. If the user doesn't regularly sync up the player with the service, the songs go dead as well.

RealNetworks, MusicNow and MusicNet, which distributes its service through brands like America Online and Cdigix, all have plans to launch portable subscription services this year or early 2006 at the latest. Napster LLC and F.Y.E., another MusicNet distributor, began offering portable subscriptions late last year through the Windows Media Player software, code named Janus.

Napster plans to turn up the heat on Apple with a $30 million advertising campaign debuting during Sunday's Super Bowl to promote a re-launch of its portable subscription service, dubbed Napster To Go. Napster's service is $14.95 a month - about $5 more than a non-portable subscription. F.Y.E's service is also $14.95.
