My Other Brain Is Powered By Silicon...

My Other Brain Is Powered By Silicon...

My Other Brain Is Powered By Silicon... 08/02/2004 01:39 PM

A short piece at CNN examines how younger people today now seem to c onsider computers and the internet as real extensions of their "carbon" brains. Without a laptop and an internet connection, it's as if they're working at a disadvantage. The article isn't suggesting this is a bad thing (as some might assume), but rather that it's different, and interesting to see how people adapt when a large component of their brain is outside of their body.

Jet-Powered Go-Kart

Jet-Powered Go-Kart 07/22/2004 11:35 AM

jet_kart.jpgIf you've always wanted to own a rickety, in-need-of-welding jet-powered go-kart, you sadly just missed you chance, as this New Zealand-based auction for just that very thing closed last night. With such reassuring features as "no brakes," "need of further repairs," and "flame-throwing afterburner," (Safety first!), let's hope the new owner takes up the seller's option of a complete rebuild and re-tune for the extra $250NZ. (Thanks, Ross!)

Juicebox: Powered Backback

Juicebox: Powered Backback 07/12/2004 12:38 PM

juicebox.jpg imageSo this is a little old, but too geeky to pass up. Some beautiful dork named Michiel has rigged all his AC adapters and wall-warts into a single backpack, allowing him to recharge all his gadgets -- and there are a lot; couple PDAs, phone, GPS, iPod, laptop -- by plugging in the single protruding cord. Sure, anybody could do it with a power strip and some electrical tape, but Michiel's done a pretty nice job of it -- the glowing, integrated USB hub is a nice touch.

Perhaps version 2 will have a solar option, as well. Perhaps I'll stop saying "Perhaps," like an ass.

Or it will convert light into negative ions to attract positive ions from acidic dental plaque or something—it's Japanese; I hold myself to no accuracy. It's part of a selection of green hygiene products on Treehugger, including a prototype ceramic-bladed razor that wouldn't have needed sharping or replacement blades, but was rubbed out when it was discovered to allow cars to travel 200 miles on just a single gallon of gas.

A Spinach-Powered Laptop?

A Spinach-Powered Laptop? 06/29/2004 04:05 AM
Roland Piquepaille writes "In "Could laptops run on spinach?," Nature reports that researchers from the MIT have made solar cells powered by spinach proteins. These prototype solar cells which transform light into 'green' energy could be used one day to coat and power your laptop. There is still work to be done before becoming a commercial product. Right now, the prototype delivers current for only three weeks. And they are not very efficient, converting only 12% of the light they absorb into electricity. However, these spinach-powered solar cells are better for our environment than silicon solar cells. And according to Science News Online, in "Protein Power: Solar cell produces electricity from spinach and bacterial proteins," they also have the potential to be self-repairing. You'll find more excerpts on my blog." Anyone else think this sounds ridiculously over-simplified? Thinking about how much energy would be needed to run a laptop would suggest that spinach farming would have to become mighty popular, and you may need to coat your house in spinach if you wanted to actually use it to power a computer.

Hydrogen Powered Bicycles

Hydrogen Powered Bicycles 06/17/2005 03:45 PM

Motorbike runs on hydrogen power: These look extremely cool. Apparently dead quiet too.

[...] the motorcycle's fuel cell develops the equivalent of eight horsepower, good for speeds up to 50 miles an hour. The cycle has a range of about 100 miles on a tank of fuel. Currently, a hydrogen fill-up would cost about $3, says the cycle's project director, Andy Eggleston.

The fuel cell itself can be pulled out and carried around like a small suitcase. The company says it foresees one day being able to use the same fuel cell for different applications, such as a boat.

With fewer moving parts than in a conventional motorcycle, the hydrogen-powered motorcycle gains simplicity and quiet. The rider hears little more than the sound of tires spinning over the road or trail.

I wondered whether I should call this a "motorcycle," but at 8 h.p., I figured it was just a bike with...a...motor. Wait a second...

“Thunderous sound waves could one day propel spacecraft to the edge of the solar system, say engineers who have developed a new type of acoustic engine. Current long-range spacecraft - like the US-European Cassini probe now orbiting Saturn - roam too far from the Sun to use solar power so instead carry plutonium bricks to fuel their engines. As the radioactive plutonium decays, it generates heat that produces an electric current between two different types…

Australian Air-Powered Engine

Australian Air-Powered Engine 08/30/2004 06:26 AM

automobile_19_air-compression_C.jpg imageAn Australian man has invented a vehicle powered by compressed air, although it's not the world's first, despite his claims (I've seen other prototypes before). However, the best part of Angelo Di Pietro's design is that it tosses almost all of the moving parts traditionally associated with engines, instead leaving traditional pistons-in-cylinder designs for a rotary (don't know about its Wankelness, but there you go).

The test vehicle has reached 31MPH, too, so we're not talking a little joke vehicle, although they didn't mention how long a tank would power the little cart. I did notice that Di Pietro's company, EngineAir, also designs roots blowers. Perhaps we'll soon see the world's first forced induction compressed air engine? (Thanks, Christopher!)
