The Crescent Girls School in Singapore is bringing their students into a new era of technology with Tablet PCs. I think this is awesome and I wish that more schools had the resources to make this happen. To me, this is the start of a commitment by the Crescent Girls School to empower their students with knowledge and computer skills that will serve them well into adulthood….

This week a new Web site went online as part of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, an education law that had strong support from President Bush. The site displays results from testing of elementary school students sorted by geographic area. The data include statistics about the percentage of students who are economically disadvantaged and the numbers of students who show acceptable progress in reading and math proficiency. Data are currently available for six states--Delaware, Florida, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington--and data from all states is expected to be available eventually. Testing for middle and high school students is not scheduled to begin until 2006. The project was funded jointly by the Federal government and the Broad Foundation, which supports elementary and secondary public education.[Federal Computer Week, 3 February 2004] This site will be added to Education and Distance Learning Resources 2004 Internet MiniGuide.

Getting Kids To Program Old School Video
Games
04/06/2005 06:48 AM
It seems that every recent story about Atari has been about their attempts (in their modern form -- quite different from the original Atari) to make a killing on the nostalgia market, offering up classic games from years back to today's adults -- either on computers or (increasingly) on mobile phones. However, it appears that many feel the basic concepts of old Atari videogames are still valuable for game designers to learn -- resulting in a competition to design new games for the Atari 2600. Of course, there's one twist: the games needed to be created in 24 hours. While the story is amusing to read, what it really does is remind people that, despite all the amazing graphics found in today's game, a game is still about gameplay at its core -- which many of today's game designers seem to forget.

Kids online

Kids online 06/17/2005 04:53 PM

Today, I set up a new computer for the kids. I took the new 2.8Ghz Celeron box that had been serving as my Linux file-server and swapped it with the old 450Mhz P3 box that the kids were using. I was a little surprised how easy it was to make the switch. I just took the hard-drive out of the Celeron and put it in the P3 and Linux came right back up.

I set up Windows XP Home on the Celeron box and installed the important software (Warcraft and SimCity 3000) for the kids. I would have preferred something other than Windows, but we have quite an investment in games and educational software for Windows.

I also added a wireless adapter. So now, for the first time, the kids computer is on-line. I didn't setup any parental controls or filtering software and I'm not really sure what to do about "internet safety." The boys are 7 and 8 and I'm pretty sure they aren't going to go looking for trouble quite yet, but I am a little worried that Google will send them to a site of ill-repute or some horrible porn-spam message will land in their inbox. If you've got kids around that age on-line, I'd love to hear what you do to protect them from porn-spam and other internet threats.

Easy For Kids To Buy Alcohol Online

Easy For Kids To Buy Alcohol Online 06/09/2004 01:16 AM
For years, one of the worries about offering wine and other alcohol online for sale was that it would make it easier for kids to get alcohol. However, the various e-commerce sites that sold alcohol all claimed they had strict procedures to stop it from happening. A quick test by Massachusetts Attorney General Tom Reilly and some college kids put that theory to the test and discovered it was quite easy for underage people to get alcohol online - and some fairly well-known companies may take the fall. The various sites did little to confirm the age of a buyer, and delivery companies FedEx, UPS and DHL often ignored required procedures that the boxes be signed for by someone over 21. In some cases, they even just left the boxes in front of a door without ever getting a signature - even if the box made it clear that a signature by someone over 21 was required.
