Can Information Be Both False And
Confidential At The Same Time?

Can Information Be Both False And
Confidential At The Same Time?
11/14/2003 02:50 PM
H&R Block is the latest big company to freak out over "anonymous postings" on online message boards and are trying to sue that person, who they suspect to be an employee of the firm. Here's where the story gets interesting. They're accusing this person of posting both "false" and "confidential" information. Now, it's certainly possible that the person is posting two pieces of information separately - one false, one confidential, but they don't seem to indicate that. In general, it makes sense to pick one or the other (unless you're Diebold ). By accusing someone of posting confidential information, they're basically admitting that the information is true. So, while it is possible that the information was posted in a misleading way, the fact that they first say the information is "false" and then say it was a violation of company policies for revealing confidential info makes you wonder which one it actually was. If the information is false, then the company should say so and go after the poster on those grounds. If it's confidential, they should use that. However, to say it's both makes you wonder.

Mainstream Press Realizes Google Can
Find Confidential Info
02/10/2004 02:41 AM
It's no secret that people put all sorts of confidential documents, spreadsheets and databases online without any protection when they shouldn't. It's also no secret that in using some basic keywords in a search string on Google you can dig up those files. Now, however, even the mainstream press is beginning to notice this issue, and the Washington Post is running a long article on the fact that people are searching for confidential nuggets of info via Google - and finding it all the time. What's interesting to me is that the backlash hasn't been stronger - though, maybe that's the next stage now that this story is going mainstream. I read the article half expecting people to blame either Google or the people doing the searching for the fact that this info was stored without any security whatsoever. Right now, though, most people seem to realize that the problem is with those who put the info online where they shouldn't.

Bloom Filters

Bloom Filters 04/28/2004 12:14 AM

Recent posts about LOAF, which uses Bloom filter, created a small surge of discussion about bloom filters, most notable being the Using Bloom Filters article at Perl.com by Maciej Ceglowski whom I like to remember as the fish guy (visit his blog to see why).

I went fishing for some bloom filter code but couldn't find a general library in either Java or C++.  There was one for Perl but...  Anyhow, it's probably because there isn't much code needed.  Most of the Bloom filter works is finetuning the parameters and choosing the right hashing function so it doesn't really matter.

Beside Maciej's article, I found these pages useful:

BF is pretty simple stuff but useful in many areas.  I am thinking of using it to detect 'access devices' (user name, password, SSN, credit card numbers, etc.) being submitted translucently (translucent as in Translucent Database) so I can throw up a dialog warning to the user.

Perl hashes make set membership easy at the cost of memory usage. A lesser-known technique, Bloom filters, trades a tunable false-positive rate for compactness -- and has interesting applications for privacy concerns. Maciej Ceglowski explains the theory and practice of Bloom filters.

I'm about to hit the sack, but current indications are that Bush has won Ohio by a couple of percentage points and thus has been re-elected as President of the United States.

Ohio. Isn't that the state that Diebold president Walden O'Dell promised to deliver to the Republicans?

I don't know if Ohio voters used Diebold machines. If they did, I'm certainly not about to say that the machines were fixed in any way. But the problem with voting machines without a paper trail is that there's no way anyone can be absolutely certain that the election wasn't stolen. In a modern democracy, that just ain't healthy.
