01/07/2004 03:11 PMThe origins of the term "inside baseball" are in one writer's view of
sports reporting during the 1980s. He's Bill James, now a famous
scholar of baseball. The arguments he made then explain why the term
migrated so easily to politics. The inside, said James, is a hall of
mirrors.

Smartphones Too Smart?
Smartphones Too Smart?
11/13/2003 01:36 PMEchoing yesterday's anecdotal story about
mobil
e phones with too many useless features comes this study saying
that smart phone adoption is slow, in part, because
the phones are too complex
for people to understand. People are quickly getting frustrated
because they have no idea how the phones work. Customers bought the
smart phones on purpose, knowing they had special features, but
quickly get annoyed because accessing the special features is anything
but intuitive. Related to this is the fact that many smart phone
owners are upset by the support they get for the phones - once they
know what features are available, they can't get them to work. Is
this the modern version of the VCR that always blinks 12:00? People
are going to end up buying smart phones and never using them for
anything other than talking.

Four of the models were shown off at a trade show in Taiwan recently

Newsweek Discovers Smartphones, Confuses
Them With PCs
06/02/2004 01:38 PM
Although it took them three writers to do it,
Newsweek takes a look at the smartphone trend, trying to pose the
seemingly deep question "Will Phones Replace PCs?" while blissfully
ignoring the fact that the only possible answer is, you know, 'maybe.'
That's some thought-provocation right there. Still, there's some good
stuff in the article, like a stop-smoking program that sends
encouraging messages to Japanese students, and (hypothetical?)
examples of two single people hooking up in a bar using Symbian
Dater.
Which reminds me, I've been meaning to ask if any of you have been
hooking up via these social mobile applications like Symbian Dater or
Dodgeball. And I don't just mean 'hooking up with your friends.' I
mean, 'hooking your interface meats up to anonymous or recently met
humans.' If you send me something put [MobiHump] or something in the
subject so my spam filter doesn't eat it.
