that the organization is familiar with open source software, it's
finding open source alternatives may be the answer to more software

03/14/2005 05:57 PMAs buzz continues to grow about the rise of open source software, one
giant question remains. How will people without broadband be able to
obtain open source programs? Most all open source releases are only
made available for Internet download by their development groups, thus
eliminating access to these programs to anyone without an Internet or
broadband connection. Rokland LLC has answered this question with
their latest release of Rokland Office Suite, version 2.0. This new
CD-ROM brings together some of the most popular and most needed open
source programs including a full-featured office suite, email client,
and antivirus software. [PRWEB Mar 14, 2005]

Journalists Using Google As Their Source
On Popularity
02/18/2004 10:50 PMPeople like numbers. Numbers give them something concrete when
discussing ideas that may not be concrete at all. Thus, it's no
surprise to see people gravitate to any sort of system that gives them
a numerical value that they can use to prove a point - and the most
popular method these days seems to be doing a Google search and
looking at the number of results. That's the whole point behind
Googlefight, after all.
However, someone has noticed that
lazy
journalists are often using Google result counts as the final arbiter
on popularity - and doing no additional research. Jeremy Wagstaff
points out that, like many other things, such tools have
good uses and bad uses. While many journalists are clearly using
this because they're lazy, that doesn't mean all uses of the technique
are bad. Full disclosure: I did use the Google results count
technique in a presentation I gave at an O'Reilly conference a few
years back, but at least I admitted that it was totally unscientific.

Open Development Internally: "Following on the success of its
Eclipse open-source development platform, IBM has quietly been using a
form of open-source development internally to create technology the
company will sell commercially.
IBM calls its model Community Source, which it defines as a
collaborative, internal, open-source-style environment for developing
and testing new technology.
Danny Sabbah, vice president of strategy and technology for the IBM
Software Group, in Armonk, N.Y., said IBM is using its Community
Source model across 100 projects and 2,000 developers in the company.
These projects span the IBM Software Group, Systems Group, Research
and Global Services, he said."
Very interesting. I'd like to learn more about that. What parts of the
so called open source development process have they built into the
Community Source model? I've found that most developers have different
definitions of the open source development process (via

When Open Source doesn't open and source

07/20/2004 11:14 AMOne frustration too many: time for a rant. When a bug in Mozilla
(keyboard focus is on the previously selected window) has remained
unfixed for at least 18 to 24 months, when XFree86 mouse interaction
with PS/2 or GPM remains hazardous and makes a system unusable and
that bug has been fobbed off to the kernel developers and not dealt
with for at least two years - when there are more examples like this
that make using Open Source software a pain, what do you do?
Are you one of the few people with the time and money and
expertise sufficient to delve into the source yourself to fix the
problem?
Do we have it "too good" and these niggles are, by comparison to
the rest of the world's computer users (Windows), absolute peanuts?

06/16/2004 11:32 AM The White Rabbit has beckoned us down the wrong rabbit hole. Much has

open source development model produces superior software. But, in my
estimation, the real promise of open source lies not in open source,
but rather in open distribution. Here's why ...
Open source cracks publishing wide open
Open source cracks publishing wide open
06/17/2004 11:24 AMOnce upon a time, publishing was the domain of large corporations.
Then came desktop publishing and the tools to produce a book shrank
from the cost of an aircraft carrier to the price tag of a PT boat.
Now, small publishers on the bleeding edge of technology are fomenting
a revolution that may change the publishing market forever. Open
source publishing tools, long derided as not being ready for battle,
are proving themselves in the trenches of small publishing.

-- 1.3-megapixel camera, gostosa! -- the most interesting thing
about the A780 is its screen. Through a hole in the flip-top basic
information like Caller ID can be seen, while the full display is
accessible when opened. It's a smart design; hopefully developers will

Hey, is that a picture of me holding the new Motorola V3
RAZR phone at last night's Yankee's game? Why yes, it is! Is it also
proof of my inability to use the Fuji F440 I'm reviewing to focus on
something in the foreground? Why, it's that, too!
I didn't get a chance to mess around with it for long - it isn't
mine for review, sadly, but someone from another magazine - but boy oh
boy is that one sexy phone. It's almost sort of big when you look at
it from the front, but then you close it and look at its profile and
go all sort of knock-kneed. And that flat metal keypad is heart, too.
It's a very nice phone, at least from the want to sort of rub it all
over sense.
The gold game is pretty fun, too.

There was a "may be released" qualifier in there, though, so don't

RAZR -- the super-hot all-metal clamshell phone that we mentioned
yesterday [pictured right] -- was officially unveiled, as was the
MPx220, the Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition clamshell with an
integrated 1.23-megapixel camera. We'll have more details on these two
new hot flip phones as we learn more, but there's certainly no
shortage of good information in the press releases. The real question
is which would you rather have: A super-slim metal phone with okay
features or a high-end but slightly more traditionally styled phone
with lots of features?

with the new model at CTIA and noticed it has a 1-megapixel camera,
instead of the GSM RAZR's skimpy VGA sensor, which is good news for
late adopters, I guess. Sadly, none of the new Motorola phones are
quite as impressive as the RAZR. I was really hoping the SLVR models,
as thin as they are, were thinner.
