iPod Mini CNET Editors’ Choice

iPod Mini CNET Editors’ Choice 02/16/2004 05:19 PM
Calling the iPod Mini a near-perfect MP3 player, Eliot Van Buskirk writes, “The iPod brand has become synonymous with excellent portable audio players, and the 4GB Apple iPod Mini carries on the tradition with its fashionable, intelligent design. Its hard drive holds about 74 hours’ worth of music and shares the same impressive graphical interface and sound specs as its larger sibling, the white iPod. Meanwhile, the earlier device’s strongest design point — the scrollwheel — has been improved to help you navigate menus and music with even greater one-handed ease.” [Feb 16]

Delphi Readers Choice Awards

Delphi Readers Choice Awards 08/03/2004 06:01 PM

Although I've flirted with other languages, all of my shareware applications (HomeSite, TopStyle, FeedDemon) were coded using Borland Delphi. One of the great things about Delphi is that there are so many excellent third-party components and tools available, many of which were just honored in Delphi Informant Magazine's 2004 Readers Choice Awards. Since I get a number of emails asking which tools I use, I figured I'd highlight some of the winners that I rely on.

TopStyle and FeedDemon both use the excellent Express Bars and ExpressQuantumGrid component suites from Developer Express. Developer Express is one of few companies whose products I would buy without even trying them out - they're that good.

I use FinalBuilder to automate the creation of each TopStyle and FeedDemon build, and I wouldn't live without it. Likewise, I wouldn't live without AQTime, which I rely on for locating performance bottlenecks in my code.

Notably absent from the awards is the superb InnoSetup installer. Even though InnoSetup is free, I gladly donated to the developer since his work has saved me a lot of headaches.

Linux Becomming Robot OS of Choice

Linux Becomming Robot OS of Choice 12/06/2003 01:05 PM
Tech News World is saying that Japan's robot developers are going Linux. Japan seems to be hot place for robots and Japan is using Linux for their robots. Probably because Japan isn't scared of the mean old robots like other countries may be and probably because they need someone to take care of their elderly. These Japanese robots need an OS, and what's becomming the defacto standard is Linux. Although Windows is working other venues such as speech recognition and such, it seems Linux already has a shoe in for robots in Japan.

qpsmtpd review in Linux Journal 12/02/2003 01:19 AM
Lots of things happened in my life in the last ~2 months. But they've all been either too personal to post here or too insignificant relatively to the important things for me to want to take time to write them. I considered writing about the more personal things, but I decided against it. I think I might be about ready to pick up the stream of nonessential random tidbits again though... We'll see. The December issues of Linux Journal includes...
