A Six Sigma Approach to Security
A Six Sigma Approach to Security
09/07/2004 03:01 AMHow sure are you that your security policy is effective. Let's say
that it is, so how effective is it? What costs are incurred by the
policy, and I don't mean just monetary. One way to answer these
questions and ensure the policy is not only effective, but also
efficient, is to apply the Six Sigma approach.
I'm meeting more and more IT folk who are Six Sigma trained, either
Black Belt or in training for the recognition. A Black Belt must be
able to explain the philosophies and principles of the quality
program, including how systems, tools, processes, and continuous
improvement can best be applied at multiple management levels and to
diverse business processes throughout the organization., (quality,
process/continuous improvement, etc.) and will be able to apply them
in various business processes throughout the organization. However,
quality is frequently mentioned in terms of product development and
manufacturing. I think that it must also be applied to digital
security.
Who is responsible for the security of digital assets? Each and
every employee who has contact with the data must understand that
she's responsible for the data's security, to the extent authorized by
her corporate authority. However, policies based on making everyone
responsible rarely succeed, be cause ultimately, no one accepts the
personal responsibility. By using a Six Sigma approach, the security
analyst starts at the other end, rather than the corporate user of
data, the analysis begins with the customer, ultimately the real end
user of corporate data. The Six Sigma process can evaluate security
holes, causes, and what long-term affects intermediate actions have by
evaluating the number of times customer service has been affected by
security failures.
Dave's Opinion
The Six Sigma approach to effectiveness and quality assurance is based
on ensuring no failures occur. Sigma is used to mean deviations from
the norm: defects from perfect quality. Six Sigma means that only 3.4
defects per million occur.
The Six Sigma approach is popular in many management applications,
not just information technology; however, I have rarely seen it
applied to security management. Maybe, it's time.

11/25/2002 11:57 AMHey Mom! I'm a Columnist Now!
Yes that's right -- soon you can catch even more of my drivel and even
read it in dead tree format without having to put paper in the
printer. I'm now the "On the Horizon" columnist for the forth coming
PHP Journal magazine. On the Horizon talks about the new things
coming in PHP 4.3 / 5.0 so if anyone has input on that, let me know.
And I do have to put in a plug for the PHP Journal folks who are also
the same ones that put out Linux Magazine. What a nice group of
people. I've worked with a lot of folks putting on conferences before
and while I've rarely met such nice people I have NEVER been paid on
the spot before. I was a speaker, showed up and they had a check
ready and waiting and just needed me to fill out the 1099 form.
That's classy.

Thomas Keller and Per Se
Thomas Keller and Per Se
05/17/2004 02:42 PMBig article in New York about my favorite chef Thomas
Keller and his new restaurant in New York City, The Perfectionist Gets Burned: How
Thomas Keller survived the fire that almost took down Per Se.
"Just the other day, Thomas was so proud to show me
how they use painter's tape in the kitchen," [The French Laundry
Cookbook co-author Michael] Ruhlman says, visiting the Per Se
kitchen one afternoon. Instead of tearing the tape from the roll to,
say, label the plastic deli cups that hold the ingredients at each
mise en place, every strip of tape at Per Se is cut with scissors,
every edge perfectly straight. Immaculate. "Because it's all one thing
to Thomas. You can't be lax in one area and perfect in another.
"It's not about the sweeping vision," Ruhlman adds.
"It's about the minute vision. There are no big decisions. A great
restaurant is the result of a thousand little decisions. A place like
this is just composed of details. It's a pointillist picture. So every
night after service, you'll see Thomas down on his knees, scrubbing
out the cupboards."
Ah, that sounds like the Thomas Keller who charmed me as I read
Michael Rhulman's wonderful book, The
Soul of a Chef: The Journey Toward Perfection. I love the minute
vision, the focus on the thousand little decisions, making sure each
one is as right as it can be. Of course, such perfectionism is
exhausting, but I think that's just how I'm made. And reading this
makes me want to take back what I said the other day about not wanting
to eat at Per Se. Maybe I do after all...

Disney parks gossip columnist
Disney parks gossip columnist
07/27/2004 02:58 PMAn anonymous reader writes, "MiceAge.com is sort of a gossipy (and
many times quite bitchy) site devoted to all the latest going-ons at
the happiest place on earth. Diehard fans of the place either loathe
Al Lutz's almost weekly tidbits about operating problems and weak
attendance at the new companion California Adventure park or love the
many photos and the latest plans to update or replace attractions.
This week Al posted about a recent visit by Michael Eisner to try and
chat up the cast members, only to end up proving how out of touch he
is with what is going on. Last week Sue Kruse in a very funny piece
detailed just what was involved as far as the public goes with a
staged 50th anniversary event. In an internet ocean of fawning Disney
sites, MiceAge stands out if only for trying to just try and tell it
like it is."
When Eisner did show up at that particular cafeteria in a pitiful
attempt to rub elbows with the masses, he only really succeeded in
proving how out-of-touch he is and how little about the Parks he
actually knows. As the cafeteria took notice of Eisner's arrival,
which was hard to miss due to the big entourage accompanying him,
Eisner put forth his best political skills and tried to make friends.
He marched right up to two college aged guys wearing Adventureland
costumes waiting for their cheeseburgers and said "Hi fellas, where do
you guys work?" The two Cast Members dutifully replied "We work at the
Jungle Cruise, sir." Eisner broke into a broad and forced smile and
said "Hey, that must be a lot of fun! I'd love to be able to drive
that boat around all day, making those jokes and shooting at the
hippo's like you do!" And without missing a beat, one of the Jungle
Cruise Skippers said "We don't get to shoot at the hippo's anymore
sir. They took the guns away three years ago." Eisner could only
stammer, "Oh, they did? I didn't know that..." before he moved on down
the line for the next forced smile and handshake. (By the way, the
plan is still on to reverse Paul Pressler's silly and overly PC
decision and bring back the guns to Jungle Cruise that we'd told you
about in a previous update.)
