Apricorn EZ Bus Mini Hard Drive Reviewed

Apricorn EZ Bus Mini Hard Drive Reviewed 08/23/2004 06:30 AM

apricorn_usbev.jpg imageThe good news about the Apricorn EZ Bus Mini 20GB, a USB bus-powered hard drive design for on-the-go backups, is that it works very well (if a little slowly), and even has a pretty nice suite of software if you're using Windows (OSX can see the drive fine, but there's no software). The bad news is that for about the same $200 or so price of the Apricorn EZ Bus, you could get a regular USB 2.0 or FireWire unit that uses standard 3.5-inch hard drives with at least five or six times the capacity. Of course, it would be nearly as portable as the iPod-sized Apricorns, and it would probably require its own mains power, but it would be bigger.

That being said, if you're on the road, and looking for a cheap way to store some of your data, if not all of it, it looks like a pretty decent deal. Everything USB has a little price checker at the bottom of their review, and it looks like the 20GB model can be found for as low as $165; cheap enough that the "why not just buy an iPod?" argument is nullified, thankfully.

I love Andre's new dropcash app, because it helps you coordinate a little fundraiser (like this test one) simply using paypal and typekey. It's cool that both systems allow for third party apps like this to spring up, as this provides functionality the amazon donations/payment program has, but paypal never had. Hopefully paypal rolls this into their system or gives Andre a job doing it for them.

Memory Reading Hard Drive
06/30/2004 12:37 PM

DriveProVP300_2.jpg imageThe Vosonic X'S-Drive Pro VP 300 is 40GB external hard drive that is clunky, cheap-looking, has a crappy text-only integrated screen, plays MP3s, but not WMA, AAC, or OGG Vorbis, and can only read from one card from its card reader at a time. So why would any photographer want it? Because it's cheap, it does the primary job it was designed to do (act as remote backup for memory cards), and can accept as many additional 2.5-inch laptop hard drives as you want to swap into it, meaning that all other things aside, you can purchase this single $335 drive and continue to upgrade it for only the price of additional hard drives.

A mini-guide to Mac OS X for new Mini
owners

A mini-guide to Mac OS X for new Mini
owners
02/01/2005 08:53 PM

Apple finally went and released an inexpensive computer. With the advent of the Mac mini, some Windows and Linux users who have been curious about Mac OS X but turned off by Apple's high prices have finally bit the bullet and ordered a mini.

Trying an unfamiliar operating system can be irritating at times. Things are not where you expect them to be, the GUI is different, and connecting to servers and other PCs can be frustrating. Hence the mini-guide.

This is not intended to be a comprehensive guide to all things OS X. Its purpose is to help those new to the operating system do simple things, like use a Windows printer, connect to a network share, and figure out what the key with the funny-looking squiggle on it next to the spacebar does (or even use your PC keyboard with a Mac). So if you're an "adder" and are feeling a bit out of sorts, check out our guide.
