“So I needed to buy a DVD player on New Years Eve 2000 (going onto 2001) because I wanted to watch a couple of movies and happened to go to Circuit City (the 14th Street Union Square store). At that time they had a promotion that if one bought a 26” TV or bigger, you would get a free DVD player. This I felt was the perfect opportunity to upgrade my crappy 20” TV so…

FCC Chairman at Circuit City -- I don't
believe it
05/14/2004 03:26 PM
A USA Today article reports that FCC Chairman Michael Powell recently went to Circuit City to switch his phone number to a new carrier:
FCC Chairman Michael Powell said he switched carriers for his work wireless phone as well as for his wife and son at a Circuit City outlet and the moves were done in an hour.

"I was shocked at how well it worked," Powell said. He declined to identify the carriers but said his name was not on the accounts so he did not receive favorable treatment.
What kind of stunt is this? Doesn't Powell have an army of factotums to do this kind of thing for him? And how was he able to change a phone account that didn't have his name on it? Furthermore, didn't the Circuit City people ask to see an ID to see if his name matched the name on the phone account? How did he pay for the account -- using a credit card with a fake name on it? If you have a PC that runs an older version of Windows, you don't have the built-in slide-show software available to XP users. But there could well be another sophisticated slide-show program on your computer: PowerPoint. While Powerpoint is commonly thought of as a business tool used to display mundane graphics like sales charts, it works quite well for showing off photos. And millions of people already own the software because it was bundled into their versions of Microsoft Office.

And while we're talking about home audio, it's probably good to mention that Onkyo is shipping the DV-CP802, the first six-disc DVD carousel that plays almost all current media disc formats, including DVD-Audio and multichannel SACD audio discs, as well as both DVD+/-R/RW. It shouldn't be out of range for most, either, with a MSRP of only $500. Now you can burn those 64kbps MP3s to a DVD-audio disc for maximum sound.

Apple to go head-on with Microsoft?

Apple to go head-on with Microsoft? 12/31/2004 10:55 AM
Not quite, but Apple Computer Inc. will try to gain more consumers by lowering their prices on their iMac product. The iMac, an all around product, for the advertising and graphic sector might become a bit less expensive during 2005. Apple wants to take a piece out of Microsoft's bussines since they feel their iPod product is doing so good at the moment and Microsoft's leading product: Windows is having a heap of security problems. Although Apple made no announcement at this time, word around the campfire is, Apple plans on selling $500 iMac's.

Many have accused Microsoft of raiding Apple for ideas for its operating system, applications, and other ideas for software and hardware over the years. Law-oriented publication The Lawyer is reporting that Microsoft UK has hired away Apple's chief attorney in the UK, something we know because Macworld UK spotted the news first.
