NW-HD5: Sony's iPod Killer?
04/06/2005 12:37 PMSony showed off the latest addition to its line of Walkman digital
music players Wednesday, the NW-HD5. While it is the fifth hard drive
player to be released by the company, it will be the first to see
worldwide distribution. Unlike Sony's previous units, the NW-HD5 is
designed to stand upright, similar to Apple's iPod.

Mossberg: Sony's new Walkman is no iPod
killer
07/28/2004 01:08 PMThe
Wall Street Journal's technology columnist, Walter
Mossberg, t
akes a look at Sony's new 20GB Network Walkman NW-HD1, the first
Walkman portable music device to feature a hard drive (subscription
required to read the article). Already dubbed an "iPod killer" by some
industry wags, the Walkman fails to impress Mossberg on several
points, including "confusing" user interface, "tedious" song-loading
process that took more than two hours to transfer 416 songs, and less
robust companion music download service that also sports more
restrictive rules than the iTunes Music store. "The iPod wins this
round, and remains champion," said Mossberg.
Sony's $60 iPod? No way
Sony's $60 iPod? No way
11/06/2003 01:54 AM
The Register echoes our skepticism about Sony's announcement that
they're planning a $60 MP3 player to compete with the iPod:Sony hasn't
said that its $60 music player will feature a high capacity hard drive
as the iPod does - or is as compact as the Apple machine. Hard drive
prices are falling, it's true, but ultra-compact, high capacity models
are still pretty expensive, and eat up much of the cost of
manufacturing a hard drive-based music player. We've no doubt that
Sony will offer such a device of its own, but the $60 model isn't it.
That's less than half the price of a typical 128MB solid-state MP3
player, for heaven's sake. What Sony is probably planning is some sort
of barebones player that can have a hard drive attached to it or
something like that....

HP's iPod Killer To Be... The iPod
01/08/2004 08:41 PM
While everyone else is scrambling around trying to design an iPod
killer, the folks over at HP figured why bother? They've gone and licensed
the technology directly from Apple and will start selling their
own branded version of the iPod - complete with iTunes. This is a bit
surprising, because you'd expect HP to just sign up for a
Microsoft-supported product instead. Still, any bets on whether or
not this device will be called the HPod?

$50 Microsoft iPod Killer? Feh!!
$50 Microsoft iPod Killer? Feh!!
05/28/2004 09:39 AMMicrosoft is apparently preparing to battle the iPod. Not satisfied
with decimating the Macintosh with undercut pricing (and, admittedly,
a more sound distribution model) Microsoft wants the iPod to have a
more Apple-like 5 percent market-share. But will it work? Yes, and
no.
Yes, because there is a significant percentage of people out
there who simply don't appreciate the stunning combination of design,
technology, and usability that is Apple. These people appreciate a
cheap price, languish in the familiarity of all things Microsoft, and
don't appreciate good design.

Killer Mobiles for Killer Apps
Killer Mobiles for Killer Apps
02/01/2005 08:35 PM
Continuing my series on mobile platforms, I now think killer mobile
apps need mobile
devices designed like game consoles, meaning that it has one
or two slots
for application cartridges. Each cartridge contains one or
more applications.
Cellphones would come with a built-in cartridge containing the
phone app as well as
others.
Adding a cartridge adds new apps. Applications have two
modes: running and stopped.
The Next-App
button (aka
Appy button) activates (brings to front) each running apps in
turn. Some apps
can activate itself when an event fires (phone call
received). To see the list
of available apps, keep the Next-App button pressed for a second.
Eventually, app cartridges will be advance to become platform
cartridges, taking over
the full functionality of the mobile device to offer better
application platform services
than the one that came with the device (i.e. easy to use app
download service that auto-configures
apps for your device). If you don't like the built-in
calender, just stop it
and run a third-party calendar instead.

Regarding Blood And Oil
04/13/2005 02:32 PM
Whereas, in the past, national power was thought to reside
in the possession of a mighty arsenal and the maintenance of extended
alliance systems, it is now associated with economic dynamism and the
cultivation of technological innovation. To exercise leadership in the
current epoch, states are expected to possess a vigorous domestic
economy and to outperform other states in the development and export
of high-tech goods. While a potent military establishment is still
considered essential to national security, it must be balanced by a
strong and vibrant economy. 'National security depends on successful
engagement in the global economy,' the Institute for National Security
Studies observed in a recent Pentagon study.Regarding

America's Growing Petroleum Dependency by Michael T. Klare, here

Loyola University has received approval to
investigate PolyHeme®'s use as a blood substitute for
critically injured and bleeding trauma patients at accident scenes.
Blood has a very short shelf life, requires refrigeration, and
matching types takes too much time too carry blood in ambulances. The
blood substitute has a long shelf life and is compatible with all
blood types. It's designed to furnish oxygen which will "prevent
organ damage in the brain, heart, lungs, liver and kidneys,"
until a transfusion can be done at the hospital. - pretty damn cool. I
hope it works. [cross-posted on my site]

12/18/2003 11:45 AMMy friend Rebecca Blood has a piece on blogs in The Guardian that
tries to shift our enthusiasms about weblogs. I'm not entirely
convinced by it. She starts by saying that "no one really understands
weblogs." Fair enough. She then puts holes in those who have described
weblogs in "outrageously overblown terms": Enthusiasm abounds.
Bloggers enjoy describing themselves as pioneers, though their ideas
of innovation are sometimes suspect. "We are writing ourselves into
existence," some ecstatically proclaim, as if Pepys and Boswell and
the historic legions of their fellow journal-writers had never
existed. As the guy who said "We are...

05/23/2004 09:25 AMI couldn't agree more with this
piece on gay men being banned from being sperm donors. The same thing
happened a few years ago with the blood transfusion service. They're
desperate for donors and yet the rules say (in the UK) that any man who has ever
had sex with another man should not donate. I've been tested
regularly for pretty much everything and am clear, have a relatively
rare blood type (A-) and there are chronic
blood shortages that could result in deaths. What possible
rationale could there be for stopping me from helping?

Valiant Comics
are Back! After a brief surge in popularity and value at the start
of 1991, Valiant comics soon died during the great comic crash of the
mid nineties. Now it seems that valiant comics are worth their weight

ago, now bringing in
200 dollars. Is this surge in price a sign
of a new comic book crash or are collectors finally finding value in

Spring Again, with Blood
Spring Again, with Blood
03/06/2004 02:06 AMWe had rare Pacific-Northwest February sunshine today, and girded our
loins for some serious pruning and cleaning. I took pictures and was
editing them and thought “decent, but I had pictures of spring
flowers (some of the same ones) this time last year.” Then I
realized that was stupid; do I not look at this year’s flowers
because I saw last year’s? And there are people who are living in
places where winter is probably starting to wear ’em down again who
might be cheered by a preview of what they’ll be seeing in a few
weeks. So herewith the same old crocuses and daffodils, but this story
has a pretty severe barb to it.
[Update: Identified the mystery
flower, worth checking out.]...
