Eating on a Saturday night
04/17/2005 06:52 PMI've been doing a fairly good job of eating at lots of yummy places
while here in Paris. Obviously I've been doing a fairly crappy job of
documenting those meals, mostly out of sheer laziness. But last night
we decided to eat in for a change, and to soften the repeated blows my
wallet has taken during this trip. To turn the documentation tide, I
present a photo of what we had for dinner on Saturday night.
For our shopping, we decided we'd head to La Grande Epicerie Paris,
the amazing food market at The Bon Marché -- one of Paris'
grand department stores. We started in the wine section and being, in
reality, poser gourmands and wine afficionados, we just grabbed two
bottles that looked good and tried to escape before the woman started
speaking to us in French about wine. My French class hasn't gotten to
that level of interaction yet, and I wasn't up to the challenge. The
take? A half bottle of Domaine Pradelle Crozes-Hermitage, 2002 (white)
and a full size 2000 Saint-Joseph from Ferraton Père &
Fils. Where they good? Seemed so to us. We're pretty much happy with
anything from the Rhône.
Next stop, the meat counter where we procured some mousse de canard.
Somehow I managed to leave it out of the nice photo, so here it is
just tossed on a plate. Then, on to the cheese counter!
Here we were at a loss as there were just too many cheeses to choose
from. Though I have French Cheeses: The Visual Guide to More Than 350
Cheeses from Every Region of France, it was no use among the vast
selection (because I didn't have it with me and hadn't memorized it
all, yet...). So I used my every-improving French to explain our
predicament to Madame la Fromagière:
(In French, sort of)Madame, we do not know the cheeses well of France.
Is it possible that you make a selection of three cheeses for us to
know more the cheese?
Of course!, she replied, quite happy to be put to such a test. So she
asked a few more questions and we ended up with a Brie de Meaux, a
Comté Rivoire, and a bouton Charolai which was a button of a
lovely aged goat cheese. They were all excellent, and Madame chose
well for us. The Charolai was my favorite new cheese in a long time.
We had also picked up a saucisson sec aux myrtilles, a dry sausage
with a blueberry(!) coating. It was good, but didn't have much
blueberry flavor. And of course, the requisite baguettes upon which to
spread our yummy cheese and mousse. It was tasty and easy and I have
to say, I want to do it again very soon!

03/13/2003 10:16 AMI'm still reeling from writing that last post in a blast of
confused and desperate-to-get-it-out-there enthusiasm. And I
still have no idea whether it's total bunk or not. So I'm going to
throw out my linklog for the evening and leave it at that. Tomorrow I
may write about any of the following things that have been going on:
- Giving a statement to the police about my burglar;
- Getting tickets to see The Bangles live in concert;
- Spotting Jake Gyllenhaal in Chalk Farm tube;
But all that's for tomorrow. Tonight, you must simply accept
limited microcontent votage with a little snide commentary. This is
what's going down:
- Google's Memory
Upgrade
The relationship between Google/Blogger and the Memex as explored by
Steven Johnson. And in the process, Mr Webb's t
houghts are referenced.
- Let them

"So oderint dum metuant it is. I could talk about the foolishness of
such blatant bullying — or about the incredible risks, in a
multiethnic, multiracial society, of even hinting that one might
encourage a backlash against Hispanics."
- We
blogs are all blah blah blah
From the people who brought you, "God, isn't it annoying how
the world is still round?!" and "Don't you find it infuriating how
light, you know, works?!"
- Camino 0.7 is

Only interesting to those of you with OSX of course. Camino is the new
name for the browser-previously-known-as-Chimera.

* An open space gathering and conference of various groups, projects,
people, and organisations active and interested in creating a better
world.
* Action and not just talk. Too many social forums and gatherings
result with little or no outcome. Come and propose and gain support
for actions during Soho Summit, ESF, G8, GDR etc.
* An assembly of gifts and needs: tell everyone what your projects are
all about, what they have to offer, and what they need. Together we
have everything. Let's self-organise and share!
* About working together, many of us have shared principles despite
our diverse goals. No more either or!

San Francisco: Saturday morning...
08/14/2004 01:20 PMSo I kind of slacked off yesterday, if truth be told. Not a lot of
exploring, not a lot of drenching myself in San Francisco - just a
fair amount of doing things I like to do that I don't really often get
the opportunity to do. So I went to see two films (the other one was
the
Manchurian Candidate - much recommended), bought a couple of books, a case for my iPod, had a really nice Clam
Chowder and portion of Fish and Chips at San Francisco's best American restaurant and
sat in Starbucks for a bit
(thanks Anil) starting to
catch up on all the cool stuff that's been going on around the web in
the million years since we started working on representing programming
on Radio 3.
Today I think is going to be more about getting some of the flavour
of the city - or at least starting to ramp up my mucking around with
local geeks. Hopefully I'm going to go see Danah's kittens in the
next couple of hours, go see Heather at Taco Bell around lunchtime, and
then go see a movie
with Leslie this afternoon.
But all of this is really preamble to the main event which should
be happening this evening - a drink and catch-up with local geeks at
San Francisco's famous Tonga Room
and Hurricane Bar from 8.30 this evening. Come along if you can.
It'll be fun...

Saturday is Cal Day (and bakesale day)
in Berkeley
04/17/2004 02:23 AMThis Saturday is Cal Day, when UC Berkeley has an open house all day.
Although it is supposedly geared towards prospective students, it's
lots of fun for everybody. For the autodidact, there are lots of free
lectures and demonstrations. I'd recommend Professor Tyrone Hayes'
lecture, Genetically Modified Weeds, Hermaphroditic Frogs, and
Premature Babies, if you can get yourself to the Valley Life Sciences
Building by 9 AM. Cal Day is also a great place to bring kids for the
day. There are lots of fun hands-on activities for kids of all ages.
We went last year (in the rain) and had a blast. Based on last year's
experiences, I would especially recommend Activities in Archaeology at
the Archaeological Research Facility, 2251 College Ave. for elementary
school age children. The university students were very sweet, and they
really set things up nicely for kids, with lots of interesting
activities, and the kids get to take the home the "artifacts" they
discover. The parents can watch hand tools being made from obsidian
and flint, just as our ancestors did 10,000 plus years ago. Another
good pick is visiting the usually pricey Art Museum or Lawrence Hall
of Science, both of which are free for the day. It would be hard to go
wrong taking a kid to Cal Day. As a final bonus, MoveOn activists are
holding their Bake Sale for Democracy Saturday, and there are 6 bake
sales being held within a mile of campus. Rumor has it that the
founders of MoveOn will be at Kerry's Benvenue Bake Sale for part of
the day. Highly recommended....

Office work on a Saturday
04/17/2004 07:11 PMI went in to the office today at noon, because I'm way behind on
work. Way behind.
I started cleaning out my in-box. It had 998 emails in it, some
dating as far back as January. (I don't file or delete emails until
I've had a chance to act on them, if they require action, or, if I've
had time to digest their import if they're just FYI messages). 998
emails.
Ugh...
As I was deleting and filing emails, I did a bunch of other stuff
like adding contacts to my contacts DB, creating proposals and
servicing accounts.
Update: been working for 5 hours, down to 740 emails in my
inbox.
Update: been at it for 6.5 hours. Down to 668 emails in my inbox.
Created 3 proposals, one contract, and two sales flyers. Time for a
beer.

sixspace in Los Angeles opens a new show of robots-as-golems art this
Saturday -- from artists Martin Ontiveros and Donovan Crosby. Gallery
co-owner Caryn Coleman says:
"The reception for Risen is Saturday, January 24th, from 7-10
pm. The show continues through February 28th.
Risen explores the themes in differing folklore: Ontiveros
(Portland) depicts the deed-doer Golem from Jewish folklore with his
signature-style robots in his paintings on wood and bottles while
Crosby (Los Angeles) takes haunting tales from voodoo tales to create
a little black magic in her lush work. The title Risen is
derived from the rising souls in Golem's quests or the rising of evil,
such as zombies or spells, in voodoo.

This Saturday, Monochrom (crazy Austrian net-artists) continue their
rampage across the West Coast with "Experience The Experience Of A
Magnetism Party" at Los Angeles's Machine Project:
Accompanied by contemporary alternative mainstream rhythms and using
several heavy-duty neodym magnets, monochrom will delete all the data
carriers that can be found. Naturally the public is invited to bring
data
carriers themselves.
The destruction of magnetic storage media is a form of destruction
that can
reasonably be called unspectacular. But it is important. Our society
collects and collects and collects. The hard drives are full. However,
we
can also dispense with the bourgeois-humanist criticism of the
"information
flood", this maelstrom that is said to attack the printed word. The
Magnetism Party is therefore an attempt to actively come to terms with
one
aspect of the information society that is almost completely ignored by
our
epistemological machinery.
Delete is just another word for nothing left to lose.

Badass Bollywood dance-off Saturday in
San Francisco
Badass Bollywood dance-off Saturday in
San Francisco
02/05/2005 09:25 PMXeni Jardin:
Terrific
SF Chronicle article about a Bollywood dance
competition taking place in San Francisco tomorrow. Snip:
Growing up in Calcutta, I rarely watched Hindi films. Going to the
movies usually meant viewing English-language evergreens like "Born
Free" and "Willie Wonka," or hoary literary classics with dialogue in
my native Bengali. Bollywood was a risqué world with money but little
class where the vamps flashed thigh and cleavage and the heroes kept
their shirts unbuttoned. At my school, we had regular "hair check"
days, at which school staff made sure our locks were not curling over
our collars like some "two-bit Bombay film star." We knew Bollywood
produced more films than Hollywood, and millions of Indians queued up
on opening weekend to buy tickets on the black market, but I was
taught to look down my nose at the genre's kitschy excess.
Now, to my surprise, Bollywood is entering the American mainstream,
thanks to movies such as Mira Nair's art-house hit "Monsoon Wedding"
and the Bollywood-inspired pageantry of "Moulin Rouge." Indian beauty
queen Aishwarya Rai recently appeared on "60 Minutes," and rapper Dr.
Dre was slapped with a lawsuit for mixing a snatch of an old Hindi
song into his single "Addictive." It's also hit academia in
media-studies courses on campuses from UC Berkeley to MIT.
Link (
Thanks, Brian "Badass" Lam!).
Update:
Boing Boing reader Kevin H
points out that the author of this SF Chron story appears to have made
a minor error:
Dr. Dre didn't have a single called "Addictive". The single was for Truth Hurts, and it
featured a blistering Rakim rap. Truth Hurts is an artist on Dre's
label Aftermath Records. DJ Quik produced the single. It drips with
hotness.
