Chop Shop In 3D

Chop Shop In 3D 07/06/2004 01:55 AM
Virtual Cycles’ 3D Chop Shop, software designed to allow you to build a virtual bike straight from your imagination. For a measly $49.95, you can create and customize the bike from depths of your mother’s worst nightmare! The downside is that it does not appear to be shareware, and information on it is quite limited.

3D Chop Shop

3D Chop Shop 07/05/2004 12:43 PM

So I'm Googleing around looking for info on building a bike rack for my garage to keep my kids from making a parked bicycle maze, and I stumble upon this: 3D Chop Shop.

Virtual Cycles' 3D Chop Shop is interactive software that allows you to build and customize your dream motorcycle. In complete and realistic 3D, Chop Shop gives you the power to change parts, accessories, and paint colors right on your PC.

Whether you are searching for that perfect part or paint job and need a tool for visualizing your creation...or you simply want to be creative and design cool bikes you can print and share with others, 3d Chop Shop is perfect for you.

The rendered motorcycle drawings produced by 3DCS look pretty realistic, but I couldn't find any 3D renderings on their site.

So far only a PC version is available, but they are working on a Mac port of it. $49.95.

The funny thing is that my oldest son and I were talking just yesterday about how fun it would be to have something like this to customize cars (he and his buddy watched 2 Fast 2 Furious the night before.) He goes nuts over the tricked out rice burners, but at 14 there's no way he's going to even touch a real car until his hormones slow down. Like maybe 20 or 25. Doing something in software though might be a good outlet for him!

eMachine Shop

eMachine Shop 08/27/2004 01:33 PM

Designing something in two dimensions and printing it out has always been a fairly easy task, and recently getting something "imaged" in three dimensions has become reality. But only if you don't care how durable that something ends up being.

Now there is a better alternative; eMachine Shop will do it for you. Download and use their free software to draw your design (or import a dxf file from a CAD drawing), it will tell you if your doodad can be made or not, then it will give you a cost estimate for the work. You then send your drawing to eMachine Shop, and they will build it and ship it out to you.

They do injection molding, milling, turning, laser cutting, waterjet cutting, wire EDM, tapping, bending, blanking, punching, plastic extrusion, and thermoforming. Turnaround time is generally about 30 days; considering the fact that it's one-off work, that's not unreasonable. The cost is pretty reasonable too. An article on cnews listed 10 brass doorknobs custom milled for about $150. That includings labor.

Another Reason Not to Shop at Wal-Mart 01/17/2004 10:47 PM
New York Times (reg req): Worke rs Assail Night Lock-Ins by Wal-Mart. The reason for Mr. Rodriguez's delayed trip to the hospital was a little-known Wal-Mart policy: the lock-in. For more than 15 years, Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer, has locked in overnight employees at some of its Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores. It is a policy that many employees say has created disconcerting situations, such as when a worker in Indiana suffered a heart attack, when hurricanes hit in Florida and when workers' wives have gone into labor.

Shop Offline, Buy Online

Shop Offline, Buy Online 12/08/2003 03:34 PM
It looks like the rest of the world is catching up with me. For years, now, my method for buying new books is to go into a bookstore and browse randomly until I found something interesting. I'd flip through the book a little and if it looked good, I'd jot down the name of the book. Later on, I'd look the book up online and see what sort of reviews it received, and then decide whether or not to buy it online. I did the same thing with the last car I bought - test driving at various dealers before making the final purchase online. For years, this was backwards of what most people did. They would research items online first, and then go buy at a shop. However, it appears that I'm not so much of an oddity any more. The latest study shows that many more people are resea rching in stores, but then going to the web to buy. I wonder if there will be a backlash against such in-store browsing. I recently heard about a shoe store that is telling people if they try on a shoe but don't buy it, the store will charge a $30 fee. They did this because people kept coming in and trying on shoes until they found ones that fit, and then went online to buy them instead. This seems a bit draconian, and unlikely to win many fans (or shoppers!), but it does suggest some of the tactics that brick-and-mortar shops may eventually adopt.

Having The Coffee Shop As Your Office

Having The Coffee Shop As Your Office 12/16/2003 04:13 PM
Whenever the discussion comes up about coffee shops and restaurants offering free wireless connectivity, someone always says that it's a terrible idea because those people will crowd up the tables and never leave after buying a single cup of coffee. This seems to be a simplistic view of things, and some coffee shops that offer wireless have found that having people who come in and use the place all day as their office has been quite beneficial. The Dallas Morning News has a profile of one coffee shop that seems to host a large number of "regulars" who use it as their office. They tend to buy a lot of product, bring in more customers (for meetings and such), as well as be generally helpful. In the article, one guy who works every day at the coffee shop as a freelance graphic designer helped the shop design their new menus for free. As for the big fear of them hogging up the tables? It's no fun to be working when the place is overcrowded anyway, so most of them have no problem moving on at points when it's really crowded. Instead, they tend to spend the most time there at off-peak hours, when there's plenty of free space.
