Web Leaks Reveal Rio Chroma, Rio Forge

Web Leaks Reveal Rio Chroma, Rio Forge

Web Leaks Reveal Rio Chroma, Rio Forge 07/31/2004 10:44 AM

A leak on the temporary web development site for Rio Audio accidentally revealed the names of two new audio players, the flash memory-based 'Rio Forge,' and a companion unit to the Rio Karma called the 'Rio Chroma.' In addition to the text-only leaks, both the Karma and the Chroma were listed as having a 10,000 song capacity, which leads us to believe that both devices will have a 40GB option.

Before being pulled from the development site, the Karma and Chroma were described as having, "docking station support (RCA on the Karma; digital coax on the Chroma) with line-level out, [and] both are perfect for listening to your digital music on your home stereo. The docking station's light pulses to your music too!"

We'll show you pictures as soon as possible. Hopefully the Chroma is more than just a Karma with a color screen or with colored shells (that would be okay, but I want new features, too).

HOT: Rio Chroma Details

HOT: Rio Chroma Details 08/12/2004 08:07 PM

Leaked information on the website of an online retailer has revealed more information about Rio's upcoming hard disk-based player, the Rio Chroma. While most of the data we already knew, such as the onboard SD-card expansion slot (although it's listed as SDIO in the specs, which might mean possible peripherals, such as Wi-Fi cards could conceivably be added), there are at least three confirmed bits of information that are very interesting. The first is that the Chroma will indeed come in a 20GB version (I had been betting on a 40GB version). The second is the price: listed at $390, but "on sale" for $319. And the final bit of info is just a little more information on the screen, which is listed as "16-bit," which can be read as a 65k-color screen.

Original speculation had put the Rio Chroma release date as next Spring. Should we expect it sooner? Bear in mind this information is not from Rio itself and could be inaccurate.

Still, can we get a picture, Rio?

I'll post the Technical Details information after the jump in case it is pulled. (Thanks, Aaron!)

At the Forge: Blosxom

At the Forge: Blosxom 05/17/2004 03:16 PM
Linux Journal ran a second piece on Blosxom in its May issue (the first was a nice sidebar, "Blosxom: Think of it as cat(1) with stylesheets", back in February of 2003). In "At the Forge", Reuven M. Lerner describes Blosxom as "No modules, no SQL, no hassle"--precisely!
I initially wrote off Blosxom as an unrealistic tool for blogging, assuming that its small size was indicative of its abilities. But Blosxom's power is not only in its strong feature set but in the way it allows us to mix and match functionalities.
...
Blosxom is a powerful tool for creating a Weblog; it's more than it might appear at first glance. Blosxom consists of an easy-to-install, easy-to-configure CGI program written in Perl, but its true power lies in the fact that it lets you change every part of the display through a combination of flavours (display templates) and plugin routines.
The one complaint Mr. Lerner had is addressed in the latest alpha of Blosxom 3 (3.0+4i, due out shortly): "The fact that Blosxom keeps all entries and flavours in a single directory is a bit disturbing to me and makes me wonder about the program's scalability. Even if my filesystem and Perl can handle that many files without too much trouble, do I really want to wade through them all?"

The new architecture keeps settings (settings, flow hanlders, etc) and templates (flavours, themes, etc) in their own subdirectories at both the base level (e.g. blosxom/data/{.settings,.templates}) and (optionally) anywhere in your hierarchy you wish to mix things up a bit (e.g. blosxom/software/{.settings}). By prepending these directory names with a ., they're all but invisible unless you're looking for them. Of course this is all completely configurable.

Rio Forge (Sort of) Announced

Rio Forge (Sort of) Announced 08/02/2004 08:31 AM

Forge512_main_prod.jpg imageAlthough they aren't getting as much buzz as the new Rio Carbon, the three new flash player models of the Rio Forge line have been revealed today as well. Sharing a similar shape to the Rio Cali (although glossier, for what that's worth) the new models come in three capacities (and colors), a 512MB (blue), a 256MB (silver), and a 128MB model (red), all of which accept SD/MMC card, meaning even the smallest red version can be expanded by up to 1GB at a time. No idea how much the Forge will cost or when it will be released, but since it's already on the Rio website, I'd say a late August date (around the same time as the Carbon) is a reasonable guess.

"Leaks in the Wi-Fi Bubble" 11/17/2003 03:01 PM
The San Jose Business Journal looks at cut backs at Trapeze and Vivato, referring to the setbacks as "leaks in the Wi-Fi bubble": The story also looks at Cometa's scaled down ambitions and is the fist place I've seen a Cometa spokesperson note that the company's original plans were overly optimistic. Cometa has gotten some flack for delivering on a slower pace but not admitting that its plans had changed. The story also notes that Vivato has 40 customers, which is more than I thought. I think the piece unfairly picks on Trapeze for requiring customers to use its proprietary APs--all the WLAN switch vendors require customers to use their APs. Otherwise they couldn't offer all their whiz-bang features. But ultimately those whiz-bang features may not be worth it for customers who don't want to replace existing APs or who don't like to feel forced to buy only a certain AP. I keep reading about increasing sales at companies like Bluesocket and Reefedge which both offer beefed-up security solutions to customers regardless of the APs they use....

Blaupunkpt Woodstock DAB54 Car Stereo

Blaupunkpt Woodstock DAB54 Car Stereo 07/27/2004 09:21 AM

balufkas_dab54.jpg imageDAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) radio has its fans and its detractors in the UK, but there's no questioning the creeping tide of music devices that support the standard, like Blaupunkt's newly-updated DAB54 in-dash car stereo. In addition to DAB radio functions like live pausing, record and rewind (rewind live streams to catch the beginning of a song you want to record to SD card), and TravelStore (an automatic catalog of all available DAB stations), the Woodstock also plays regular old CDs and FM radio. The DAB54 also includes Blaupunkt's VarioColour display technology with lets you pick from 4,096 different hues to match the exact color of dashboard illumination.

The biggest disappointment from the Woodstock DAB54? It's not actually wood, which means it won't match my station wagon's dash no matter how many color LEDs it has.

Similar to many other home audio streamers, the BT Voyager unit sets itself apart mainly by using a wireless link that will not interfere with 802.11b signals (and not interoperate, for that matter). It also has dual audio ins and outs if you'd like to use it as part of a less mobile get up. It's a little pricey, but the simplicity and portability make it unique (if you can convince them to ship it outside of the UK).

riocarbon_3q.jpg imagePocket-Lint manages to score the first proper Rio Carbon review I've seen, and certainly the first to use Guns & Roses as their test music. One thing that is a nice is the Carbon's drag-and-drop ability, because while music managing software can be very nice, it's also nice to have the option to just copy over some music (or whatever) via Windows' Explorer or the Mac's Finder. From the sound of it, it seems Rio has a real winner in the 5GB hard disk music player. The question is, will the consumer market think so?
