New AdSense FAQ & Policies Changes 09/01/2004 07:06 PM
"AdSense updated the FAQ & Policies (dated August 25, 2004, but not actually made live until today, September 1, 2004). Remember, when you agreed to the terms, you also agreed to comply with the policies, even when they are changed. But nothing in the policy changes should cause any sort of alarm this time."

Policies vs. Politics

Policies vs. Politics 12/19/2004 03:12 PM

Virginia Postrel hits on something interesting in a New York Times article based on a paper by a group of Harvard economists. The paper is about religion in politics, but she draws two broader conclusions:

Yet abortion rates show no significant change with the party in office, while tax rates rise significantly under Democrats - the opposite of what the political rhetoric promises. This result suggests that politicians move away from the social center mostly to get votes ("strategic extremism") and diverge from the economic center because they actually prefer those policies ("nonstrategic extremism").

Since the success of extreme messages depends on keeping your supporters better informed than your opponents, the model suggests that changing news media could be as important as changing social groupings.

Sounds right to me. The second point is intriguing because it suggests that getting the "liberal media" out of its elite, coastal shell might actually hurt the cultural conservatives who complain about it.

Policies that kill?

Policies that kill? 12/02/2003 01:10 AM
Starting with this year's State of the Union address, President Bush began a plan to increase aid to Africa, and at the center of that plan is funding to prevent the spread of AIDS and HIV that has reached epidemic proportions on the continent. Critics however, have noted that aid to clinics comes with strings attached. Abstinence is preached first and foremost and condoms are mentioned only as a last resort. This reporter flat out says the policy to curtail the funding and use of condoms in Africa is killing millions.

Second, click on the "Ads by Goooooogle" link and you'll be taken to a page where:

IMF Policies Admitted Wrong

IMF Policies Admitted Wrong 03/19/2003 10:28 PM
Oops! IMF Admits Failed Policies
International financial integration should also help countries to reduce economic volatility, the study said, but in reality this has not happened.

"Indeed, the process of capital account liberalization appears to have been accompanied in some cases by increased vulnerability to crises," the report said.

"Globalization has heightened these risks since cross-country financial linkages amplify the effects of various shocks and transmit them more quickly across national borders."

In the last 10 years, developing countries from Thailand and Russia to Argentina, have seen their economies collapse, even though many of them were trying to follow IMF-prescribed open market policies.

So does this mean corporate facism harms the world's poor?

Security on a Shoestring: Creating Internet policies on the cheap Mathew Schwartz of SearchSecurity.com writes: When did the SANS Institute write its first in-house security policies? Like many organizations, the Bethesda, Md.-based small business only did it after there was a problem. A former consultant with the organization used his existing SANS e-mail address to send spam. Technically speaking, the former consultant hadn’t done anything wrong, as the SANS Institute, best known for its computer…

At last week's Digital ID conference, Phil Windley gave an excellent overview of a number of base technologies, including SAML and XACML, two OASIS standards. Cory Doctorow suggested that these are OASIS rather than W3C standards because the OASIS patent policy doesn't encourage patent disclosure and royalty-free licensing as vigorously as the W3C patent policy now does. ...

We want to continue to thank each and one of you for having Geek News Central on your reading list.

I was contacted by Google which saved me having to go through the approval process and we want to thank Jonas for getting us setup. I will be playing with the ad placement over the next few weeks.

Adsense Article

Adsense Article 03/14/2005 06:07 PM

Google's AdSense a bonanza for some Web sites: An article about AdSense that states numbers, which is rare:

Tales of AdSense riches range from a few hundred dollars a month to $50,000 or more a year, though high-dollar paydays are rare. They require a Web site with tons of traffic and the ability to put in 18-hour days working the system. [...]

In his first four months of Web publishing, AdSense brought in $45,000. Some of his blogs produce $3,000 a month. His best do "four figures," Calacanis says, though he's reluctant to fill in the exact numbers. "And that's with zero marketing," he says.

There are some detractors:

"This is a program that rewards people not for creating the best content, but for how to create sites to attract more advertising," says Danny Sullivan, editor of Search Engine Watch online newsletter. "AdSense has nothing to do with search. It effectively turns the Internet into a billboard for Google's ads."

I've been happy with the program, and that's all I think I'm allowed to say about it.
