News site registration
News site registration
07/16/2004 11:46 AMThe single hottest topic in the online news industry at
the moment is that of required registration. A number of large news
sites (the New York Times, the
Washington Post, the Chicago Tribune) have moved
to this model, and many local newspapers are following suit.
If you haven't seen BugMeNot, go and check it out now.
It's a simple service for sharing free news site accounts, and it's
started to upset some people in the news industry. A post to the online-news mailing
list inquiring about possible legal action against the site
prompted me to reply with the following:
The flaw here is not with BugMeNot - it's with the entire
concept of
user registration in its present form. The reason BugMeNot works is
that there is absolutely no value to an end user in keeping their
account to themselves. If you want to stop people from sharing their
accounts, give them an incentive not to. This is not a difficult thing
to do - I have a large number of accounts on different community sites
which are used to contribute to discussions and manage my personal
information. I would never dream of sharing those accounts with others
- it would allow other people to impersonate me and damage my
reputation. An account that only allows me to read content (a one-way
interaction) is of no value to me, so why not share the account with
others?
BugMeNot is not a new idea by any stretch of the
imagination: shared
accounts have existed for as long as sites have required registration
for spurious reasons. For as long as I can remember, members of the
MetaFilter community have worked together to set up username/password
combinations of metafilter/metafilter on sites that require
registration to bypass the irritation of setting up yet another
account.
If you want to fight BugMeNot, the solution is to monitor
the site and
ban any accounts for your own site that appear there - but that's just
fighting the symptoms. The core problem is the whole idea of
registration itself: it's anti-web, anti-user, it doesn't scale and
it's a sign of extreme short term thinking. Imagine if every site on
the web required registration - no one would use it!
As a web user, I see registration as nothing more than an
unnecessary
irritation. Before BugMeNot I would simply hit "Back" whenever I saw a
registration screen; now I use it to carry on through to the articles
and accompanying ads. As a heavy web user who buys online almost as
frequently as offline I'm exactly the kind of demographic sites should
be trying to attract.
Reading the above a few days later, I think it still
accurately represents my thoughts on the free registration model.
Adrian has also posted his thoughts
on registration, which run along very similar lines to mine.
For a great example of the mentality behind registration,
check out this sp
iel from the Toronto Star (via Craig Saila):
Our main goal of asking you to become a registered member
of thestar.com is to improve and enhance your online experience with
us. Registration is an important piece of our long-term strategy in
building a valuable audience for our advertisers and helping us in
setting the priorities for future site development and
enhancements.
[...]
By asking you to share some information with us we are
able to increase the value of our site to advertisers, who help
support the cost of producing one of Canada's top news sites, by
offering them the ability to target their advertising messages based
on the information you provide.
And that's the problem right there: as a user, the value
proposition of having more targetted ads thrown at me just isn't a
good enough incentive for me to jump through their hoops.

about it. Fortunately for you, that was only like last week, and the
information is no less pertinent. In fact, with the Sidekick II and
the Treo Ace/610 just around the corner, bargain-minded shoppers would
do well to pay extra attention to the two devices that are still
plenty capable and about to get plenty cheap.

T-Mobile Sidekick II Reviewed
08/04/2004 09:57 AM
So, uhm, I guess the wait
for the T-Mobile Sidekick II is about over since PC Magazine just put
up a review. Way to start the hype machine, Danger! Maybe they decided
not to really talk it up because it looks sort of, you know, bland. I
mean, come on, VGA camera? Is the Sidekick destined to remain the
sort-of-cool cellphone with the crappy camera? How about
user-developed applications? When do we get those?
I guess I'll reserve final judgement until I can play around with
the new unit, but for now it looks like a modest upgrade to a unit
sorely in need of some juice in the first place. Also, I'm still a
little bit bitter Danger got so fussy a few months back when we leaked
the images of the Sidekick II. We only leaked because we cared!

Intellisync software yet? Do you use something besides Outlook as your
contacts system? Try this and tell me if it works. A reader sent in
this tip:
I used to work for Intellisync and I think that
if you install the full version of Intellisync on your machine as
well, then the extra translators for Notes/Act!/etc will show up in
the list of translators to available for use in other Intellisync
products. It's worth a try.
It would be nice if that worked, so people that used Notes or had a

Sidekick II Intellisync Released
Sidekick II Intellisync Released
09/22/2004 08:39 AM
Along with the new hardware with the upgraded camera,
radio, and what not, one of the major promises of the Sidekick II is
that Danger and T-Mo would finally offer a proper sync program. And as
of yesterday, as long as you're using Windows, it's here. I had a
chance to play around with a beta version a little when I was testing
the SKII, and while I think it's great that they've finally offered a
sync program, I hope that they'll continue to support more PIMs than
just Outlook (and generic data files, I think, as well). A Thunderbird
contacts importer would be great, for instance.
The bum deal for Sidekick II users is that the new Intellisync
application is a $10 purchase from Danger (although you can buy it
once and install it on as many PCs as you like). And since the
Sidekick is a closed platform, no one else can write a sync program
that works over the airwaves like Danger's. Welcome to the future of
monolithic carrier/manufacturer platforms.

A bit of interesting chim
cham from one Mr. Brahe, of One
Internet Lane: Apparently, while futzing around with the new
Sidekick II in San Diego, he happened to pick up on an important
difference between the old model and the new: While user-submitted
programs for the first Sidekick had to be approved by T-Mobile
(something they were seemingly reticent to do, like, ever), Danger,
creator of the Sidekick (nee Hiptop) have wrested control of
user-submitted applications back, making one critical difference
between versions: the new model will likely have more of what people
really want: applications.
Of course, one Internet Semistar does not a source make, but if
we'll follow up with Danger and see what we can find out.

T-Mobile Sidekick II Review: Best Phone

08/19/2004 03:13 PM
So I'm
heartbroken. I've just spent a week using the T-Mobile Sidekick II,
and I think it's probably one of the best mobile devices I've ever
used. And I can say, with total conviction, that I will never, ever
purchase one and neither should you. In fact, after the experiences
I've had today with T-Mobile, I'm not sure I can ever recommend one of
their products again.
You may have noticed I'm a little slow on posting today. The reason
is, besides being really, really high, is that I've spent about two
hours on the phone with various customer service reps trying to
resolve an issue that's been plaguing my primary account for the last
three months. I've stayed away from mentioning it on Gizmodo, because
I didn't want to turn my personal experiences into an overall
anti-T-Mobile bias, but after my experiences today, with the yelling,
the lies, and the misdirections, I am finally leaving them for good,
and I have received such consistent horrible, deceitful service that
I've come to realize it's indicative of a larger overall problem with
the company - and that's worth telling you about.
But first, let me explain why the Sidekick II is so awesome.

Sidekick Synching on T-Mobile Petition
06/10/2004 07:55 AMAlthough web petitions are about as effective at
charging corporate policy as complaints to customer service agents or
extremely huffy forum posts, Levi Wallach is doing what he can to
encourage T-Mobile to support synching on the Danger Sidekick --
something promised by the company for years and which is currently
being supported by non-U.S. cellular vendor Cable & Wireless.
Since all the data that goes to and from the Sidekicks has to go
through T-Mobiles servers (instead of just their network), I would
guess they would have to upgrade all their internal hardware to
support something like this, something perennial tightasses like
T-Mobile are loathe to do. But hey, sign Levi's petition and see what
they say, if anything.
