New Broadband Wireless Initiatives
Around the Globe
09/14/2004 02:51 PM
A few announcements have been made over the last couple of days about new broadband wireless deployments. Two come from Alvarion, including one where Telekom Serbia will build networks to support voice and data in suburban and rural Serbia. Closer to home, Alvarion also announced that its gear will supply a broadband wireless backbone network in Maryland, connecting counties that are part of a project connecting libraries and supplying mobile wireless for public safety workers. In other broadband wireless news, Redline said that its equipment will provide backhaul for a wireless network being built in a region of Manitoba, Canada. Wi-LAN, a Calgary, Canada-based supplier, said that its products are being used by various customers, including a large ISP, in Malaysia. AirRover Wi-Fi, a company based in Baton Rouge, La., signed an agreement in principal to build city-wide mesh Wi-Fi networks in a couple of cities in the Philippines. It must be refreshing for vendors to be making these kinds of sales, even before they are actually selling certified WiMax gear. There has been a fear that customers would delay buying decisions as they wait for certified WiMax gear. Perhaps the buzz around WiMax has generally helped to legitimatize broadband wireless so that some customers decide it will pay off for them to deploy now rather than wait for standard gear....

Gmail Invitation Prices Crash

Gmail Invitation Prices Crash 06/10/2004 06:16 AM
Not too long ago, people were willing to pay top dollar to snag an invitation to set up an account on Google's Gmail Web e-mail service. But Google seems to have become more generous with the invitations. Demand, meet supply. By Chris Ulbrich.

Large size LCD monitor prices crash

Large size LCD monitor prices crash 09/03/2004 08:23 AM
LACK OF DEMAND, over supply and huge stocks of product in the channel mean prices of large sized LCD pannels fell more than expected in August, research firm iSuppli said. That, according to a report from the firm, meant a "near time headache" for suppliers but could mean bargains for buyers. The LCD panels used in desktop PC monitors fell the most, said iSuppli in a report to its customers, meaning prices for 15-inch and 17-inch panels fell by around 18 to 19 per cent last month.

Despite hopes that sales of LCD TVs would pick up because of the Olympic Games last month, the reality was that sales were slow. And sales of LCD monitors appeared to be just as slow. Some desktop monitor firms have begun slashing prices on 15-inch and 17-inch LCD monitors already - there are stocks in the distribution panel getting dusty.

Gmail Invites Flood The Market, Prices

Gmail Invites Flood The Market, Prices
Crash
06/10/2004 09:48 AM
When we first heard that people were actually paying good money to get themselves a soon-to-be-free Gmail account, we couldn't believe it. Who would pay for a free email account? Apparently, the answer is a lot of people. Either way, this week Gmail started giving out plenty of new invites, which has fl ooded the market and devalued the price. Still, it makes you wonder how those who spent hundreds of dollars on a simple email account feel now. Either way, it appears that Google is now a big fan of the "velvet rope" method of building buzz. Having set up both Orkut and Gmail with the "invite only" method of getting in, they've made them seem even more appealing. It won't be long before every other company tries the same sort of thing - though, it probably won't work nearly as well.

MacCentral: Sony gaming exec: Broadband prices need to drop. "With the average monthly cost of broadband, about US$40, a customer could buy a new PlayStation 2 game every month." Translation: Stop competing with us for the public's disposable income. Please make less money so we can make more money. "Future versions of gaming consoles will be able to provide HDTV-ready games." This seems to confirm my hunch that the PS3 will have HD resolution. If it can play high definition Blu-ray movies, people will sort of expect the games to be HD, too.

Gaming console vendors need broadband providers and television manufacturers to lower prices on their products to help gaming grow on the Internet, said Kazuo Hirai, president and chief executive officer of Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. Hirai, speaking at a Congressional Internet Caucus event in Washington, D.C., Tuesday, called on broadband providers to reduce prices as a way to drive more U.S. residents to broadband and drive more interest in console gaming through the Internet. Television manufacturers can help spur interest in console gaming, he added, by pricing high-definition television (HDTV) sets in a range that's affordable for average U.S. residents.

Brian Mooney writes a front-page story on the increasing demand that e-voting machines leave a voter-verifiable paper trail. In the course of providing Balanced & Professional Coverage, Brian writes: ''There are valid concerns on all sides," said Dan Seligson, editor of electionline.org, a nonpartisan, nonadvocacy group that tracks election reform efforts. ''Whether democracy is truly threatened by paperless voting machines, I'm not sure that's the case. Nor am I sure it's the case that these are 100 percent reliable. I think the truth is somewhere in the middle." I wish the truth were in some middle ground, but in...

The Massachusetts Legislature passed a research-friendly stem cell bill over the objections of Governor and Spokesmodel Mitt Romney recently, so the Boston Globe today turns its op-ed page over to the controversy. Michael Sandel, a Harvard political philosopher, carefully analyzes the ethical objections to the different types of stem cells, and exposes the inconsistency in Romney's position: ...if he believes that embryos are human beings with inalienable rights, he should oppose all embryonic stem cell research, not only research on cloned embryos. If extracting stem cells from a blastocyst is morally equivalent to yanking organs from a baby, then it...
