09/09/2004 12:31 PMAn all new Probe Droid has just been launched; this week we're
searching for collector's opinions on the possibility of Luke and Han
head variants for Hasbro's upcoming
Unleashed Stormtrooper.
Kotobukiya did it with their Stormtrooper kit and Hasbro has already
shown an inclination to this idea with their red and white
Unleashed Clone Trooper variants; question is, do collectors
want it? Look for the new Probe Droid ballot now and cast your vote
today!

02/10/2004 02:41 AMI taped a segment for VH1's new series "
The Best Week Ever" a couple of days ago.
I took at look at the VH1 website a moment ago, and the topics I
talked about are listed for
tonight's show.
So I'm guessing that, if I didn't suck, I'll be on at 11PM EST on VH1.
Updated: Well, none of my stuff made it. Maybe I'll
get another chance next week -- there are a few topics we talked about
that weren't on this episode. If anyone needs me, I'll be crossing my
fingers.
By the way, how cool is it that Chris Jericho is so damn funny?
One More Update: I just heard from a producer at VH1.
He told me that there were some issues, unrelated to me, that
prevented my stuff from getting on this week. He says there's a good
chance it will happen next week, so be sure to tune in then!
I promised an increase of 5 viewers, you guys. Don't make me look bad.

Something "Fundamentally Different"

06/02/2004 10:24 AMService Pack 2 is fundamentally different from anything Microsoft has
ever done. Like any service pack, it contains a roll-up of all the bug
fixes and security patches that Microsoft has released since Service
Pack 1, which was about a year ago. But the big thing about SP2 is
that to a considerable extent, it replaces the existing security model
of Windows XP. It changes a great number of installation defaults to a
much more secure configuration, which isn't hard considering that the
default configuration of XP is essentially hopeless. And it changes a
number of security internals to get what Microsoft promises will be a
much more secure computing environment than we have ever had with a
Microsoft desktop operating system.
Within the enterprise, deploying it won't be too bad because it's
managed. Use SMS or whatever and you can deploy what you want and set
your defaults according to policy.
Where it's really going to be an issue is when people start deploying
it on their own machines that are occasionally connected to your
networks. For one thing, it's going to break applications. They're
trying to keep that to a minimum but applications that operate at a
very low level, especially those that integrate with the security
system -- leading candidates being anti-virus software and virtual
private networks -- are likely to break.

12/19/2004 03:48 PMThree things for a Sunday afternoon:
1. It was 85 degrees here yesterday and Friday. Can you believe
that? I guess Demeter worked something out with Hades, and got
temporary custody of Persephone for the weekend.
2. The ACME show last night was amazing. I have been in a lot of
ensemble casts in my life, and this cast is one of the best. It is
truly a privilege to share the stage with them, and I can't wait to do
this show every week. I remember feeling this way back in 2001 when I
was doing my first ACME show "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Sunday Show."
The camaraderie backstage creates a trust and relaxation
onstage, which takes the show up to eleven. There's
already talk of extending our show past the usual ten weeks,
because it's getting such a great response from the audience.
3. I read this in the comments recently, but I'm putting it here
for the RSS folks who probably missed Troy Rutter's The Top 10
Ways You Know You've Been Reading Wil Wheaton's Blog Too Much . .
.
10. You pronounce Wil's site as "dubya dubya dee enn" in general
conversation.
9. You take a trip to California to go geocaching hoping to see Wil's
name in the log.
8. You try to send an update to the IMDB to change Ernest's last name
to Borg9.
7. You Photoshop Wil's name onto a box of Wheat Thins.
6. You buy the "Wil has a posse" thong for your girlfriend.
5. You write a letter to the producers of Alias pleading with them to
write Wil into a dream sequence for Sidney.
4. You wish you could go back in time to help Wil kick his own ass.
3. You buy a case of voodoo dolls and put the last name "Kimmel" on
all of them.
2. You apologize out loud to Wil when Foster dies in Ghost Recon 2.
1. You watch Boston Legal and at the end of the credit you scream
"That's William FUCKING Shatner!"
Thanks, Troy! The last time I was in a top ten list, it featured
clever ways to kill my Star Trek character. Six of them involved
Klingons and soap-on-a-rope, but your list more than balances that
out.

Nootropics ("smart"
drugs) - all wish to be smarter, correct ? And - while exercise,
nutrition, learning, travel, and social interaction (the last 3 via
release of
neurotrophins) effectively do this, Nootropic drugs have been
researched since the 1950's and have been shown to cause at least
short term cognitive function enhancement. Piracetam, the first of
this drugs,
shows promise
in the treatment of Alzheimer's and Attention deficit Disorder. Alas,
as with poor little
Algernon, the
effect seems
temporary.
