Why Google News Is a *Good* Thing

09/30/2002 01:19 AM8 Reasons Why Google News Is a *Good* Thing
Dave writes how he's not impressed by Google News. Exact post:
Google PR sends a message that they have a new News service. Maybe
I'm slow this morning, or maybe I'm spoiled, but what's the big deal.
I thought they already had this. My personal aggregator is better, it
shows me what I'm interested in, it's not one size fits all. Help me
figure this out. I'm sure there's something innovative here, I just
don't see it.
From a technical perspective I'm not sure that there is a lot that's
new here. I still think this is huge though:
My aggregator is just that mine -- I heavily tilt it in favor of tech
/ blogging / highly ecclectic stuff. I don't get general purpose
"What's Going On" news -- and, sure, that's my fault. So what? A
personal aggregator is always or at least often going to be this way.
Google is giving me a much more balanced viewpoint. That's huge.
Google is integrating foreign and U.S. feeds into one composite
display. Given that there are differences in how U.S. media report
stories versus foreign media, this makes it very apparent and that's
good. The U.S. media is not always right.
The user interface is highly functional -- I could easily see my Mom
using Google News. I couldn't see her using a "traditional"
aggregator be it Radio, AmphetaDesk, Drupal or another.
The concept of aggregation is fundamentally important and one of the
very real contributions that UserLand made to us all. Still
aggregation doesn't mean squat beyond a small group of folks. Google
News will introduce the concept very widely.
Everything is very clearly time stamped i.e. "55 minutes ago".
It's not going to get confused when someone re-edits a url they've
already posted so the same thing shows up as new repeatedly.
A Caveat. Google's reputation is such that I feel that they did a
good job of picking the news sources which is particularly important
for foreign information. When I caught the Indonesian bombing news
this morning, I trusted the sources that Google chose to show me since
they're from Google. Now that may be naive and perhaps it is but a
lot of us will do that.
They aren't relying on XML feeds so they aren't dependent on news
sources that lack feeds like Voice of America. And while there are
lots of ways to build these, it's generally non-trivial.
Google News isn't going to replace my aggregator any time soon but it
is a good tool that I can see myself using regularly.

Maybe teenage pregnancy is a good thing
Maybe teenage pregnancy is a good thing
07/18/2004 06:41 PMNow that I'm 40 years old most of my friends are in their riper
years. The women who are trying to have children in their late
30s and early 40s are going through torture. Hormones, needles,
in-vitro fertilization, miscarriages, etc. Maybe teenage
pregnancy isn't such a bad idea after all. I wonder if in
pre-industrial societies it wasn't the case that the grandparents did
most of the child-rearing that required judgement and
experience. The teenage girl did the child-bearing but was still
living surrounded by extended family so that her 30-35-year-old mom
and mother-in-law could provide adult guidance for the baby.
Perhaps we believe that teenage pregnancy is bad only because our
family structures have been broken up.

I
agree with David Weinberger that the wifi project in Philadelphia
is a good thing. Like David, I hear and understand the arguments
against government running things that businesses can do, but I think
that in the case of some of the low cost basic infrastructure like
this, I think municipal governments can often deploy and run it just
fine. I think that we need to start thinking of parts of our network
as assets like roads, which can and should be run by government.
I will add that in most cases I believe in free markets and
competition for this sort of thing.

gance + Insanity = iTunes Patent.
Apple has been granted a patent for its iTunes interface, marking
the latest milestone in a path of preposterous interface patents that
started with Amazons 1-click e-commerce feature. What is Apple
protecting? Does the company have serious software rivals in the Mac
universe? Is there a developer in the Windows universe that
doesnt consider iTunes to be an undeveloped weakling among
desktop media players? Compared to iRivers Media Jukebox,
MusicMatch, and even the wretched RealPlayer (which is not represented
by any interface patents, despite being ten years old), iTunes is an
inconsequential plaything.
But only one competitor matters, and this patent is no doubt
shielding iTunes from the thieving designs of Microsoft, which, as
every Neptunian knows, attained world domination the last time it
raided Apples interface.

Dial [fn] for Exposé
Dial [fn] for Exposé
12/11/2003 04:58 PM
I've just--on the advice of Mac-pal
Duncan--remapped Exposé to
the [fn] key instead of [f9]. This is just the next step in my
logical progression towards an Exposé-driven life. I started
out a "hider", hiding everything but the active app in an effort to
reduce on-screen app clutter. Enter Exposé... I mapped all
four screen corners to All Windows Exposé view. My
multi-button optical mouse's thumb button does the same. And I've
become pretty efficient at reaching across the keyboard to [f9] for
action. Moving that to [fn] brings things closer to home (row).
My favourite hint on selecting apps with Exposé is to use the
Exposé key or button both to spread app thumbnails across the
desktop and to select the one I'm interested in rather than
Exposé button > click, Exposé button > click.

Apple III: one-click to buy = good; 20
clicks and 2 phone calls to return = bad
01/07/2004 02:42 PMBut alas, the
story is
not a completely happy one. For in addition to the iMac, I needed a
router. At first bought a Belkin router from the Apple site. (By now,
I had changed the one-click preferences to ship to my parents, so I
was able to buy the Belkin router with one click.) But then seeing
that I could get a Belkin wireless router elsewhere (of course, not on
the site selling Airports), I tried to cancel the order from Apple.
Yet when I went to return the Belkin router, life was not so simple.
There was no link in the confirming email, and it took a good routing
around on the Apple site till I found a web form to request the
canceling of an order (it was too late to call, I discovered after
calling). So literally 20 minutes after I placed the order, on
Christmas Day, I sent a request to cancel it. Today, five days later,
I received an email informing me that it was too late to cancel the
order -- which I had discovered, since my Dad called to say the router
had arrived. Twenty minutes on hold later, I received a RMA to return
the router -- of course, we pay shipping.
I wonder just what the thinking of the Apple Exec who set up this
one-click-to-buy, a million-clicks-to-fail-to-cancel system was:
"We'll make it really hard for them to cancel an order, and maybe
they'll get so frustrated, they just won't cancel it!" Yes, that is
brilliant.
Oh well, here's to the Crazy Ones.
Shrinking Antennas
Shrinking Antennas
06/09/2004 11:57 PMSometimes you need someone who isn't an expert in a field to come up
with a breakthrough in the technology. A technician in a university
lab realized that he couldn't keep up his ham radio hobby at his
girlfriend's (now wife's) house, because the antenna he needed was too
big. So, he began messing around with different ideas on new antenna
design - admitting that he basically knew nothing whatsoever about
antennas. After trying a number of different experiments over the
years, he eventually zeroed in on one possible solution, and believes
he's
created
an antenna system that shrinks the antenna size without losing its
efficiency. While some are still skeptical, and much more testing
needs to be done, this might be yet another case of an "amateur"
inventor forced to come up with something new out of necessity.
