The A5: Prototype Sub-Tablet

The A5: Prototype Sub-Tablet

The A5: Prototype Sub-Tablet 07/30/2004 08:55 AM

A5land.jpg imageGadget Madness brings to our attention a prototype sub-tablet PC called the A5 that is reminiscent of the Sony U50/U70, although not quite as nice looking. While the prototype "runs RISC OS under Windows XP," for most people the "Windows XP" part is all that is going to matter. An integrated 8.4-inch 800 by 600 pixel screen, 40GB hard drive, and detachable keyboard and touchpad round out the unit. Unfortunately, there's no real word on what class of processor it uses, information that is sure to become available if any OEMs decide to actually mass-produce the unit.

Ruby: Tiny Tablet PC Prototype 04/15/2005 09:59 AM

ruby_proto.jpgThis prototype, called 'Ruby,' is being shown off at IDF Japan 2005. It's sort of a weird cross between a Tablet PC and a PDA, with a Pentium M ULV 600 processor and a touch screen—it also runs Windows XP Tablet Edition. It's a pretty slick engineering accomplishment, but will anybody actually want to use something this size?

So it's been a little while since something has sucker punched me right in lust gland, but good job Sony for sneaking this gorgeous new Vaio VGN-U70 tablet hybrid PC onto the scene. The U70 isn't an official Tablet PC, but operates without a keyboard most of the time, with...

Subvocalization mic functional prototype

Subvocalization mic functional prototype 04/10/2005 05:51 AM
Cory Doctorow: A conceit in my novel Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom is that our cellphones will disappear into our bodies, silently feeding us audio via cochlear implants and micing our throats to pick up sub-vocalizations (something I think I ripped off from Harry Harrison, though others have done it too). Now a DARPA program has produced a functional prototype of a subvocal pickup that can turn words you haven't spoken into signals on the wire.
One system, being developed for DARPA by Rick Brown of Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts, relies on a sensor worn around the neck called a tuned electromagnetic resonator collar (TERC). Using sensing techniques developed for magnetic resonance imaging, the collar detects changes in capacitance caused by movement of the vocal cords, and is designed to allow speech to be heard above loud background noise.

DARPA is also pursuing an approach first developed at NASA's Ames lab, which involves placing electrodes called electromyographic sensors on the neck, to detect changes in impedance during speech. A neural network processes the data and identifies the pattern of words. The sensor can even detect subvocal or silent speech. The speech pattern is sent to a computerised voice generator that recreates the speaker's words.

A different wallpaper every day in your house? It may soon be a possibility, as electronic paper and ink will soon make it easier and cheaper, just like the way you change the wallpaper on your desktop. Researchers with the Southwest China Normal University announced earlier this week their success in building the country's first e-paper prototype, which combined organic transistors with e-ink that could be sprayed at very low cost on virtually any material: plastic, metal, cloth and conventional paper.

E-paper, a small, ultra-thin, radiation-free screen that consumes little power and gives a dynamic display of massive information, was designed to imitate to the maximum advantages of conventional paper and ink: flexibility, low cost and the ability to be read using ambient light. "By replacing conventional paper with e-paper, we can protect our ecological environment by cutting less trees and minimizing pollution brought by the traditional paper mills," said Prof. Fu Xiangkai with the university's Applied Chemistry Institute.
