Paths of Resistance 07/30/2004 04:57 AM

This image has been in my investor presentation for over a year. Hrm. That seems like an odd place to put a barrier. It's not like there's a cliff to fall over. It's from Peter Merholz, who also coined the...

Resistance is futile

« Resistance is futile puny human. You are going to drop that ice cream any moment now. Obey my hypnotic stare. »

I watched this little dog crawl under the bench and gaze lovingly at a German man's ice cream. Sadly, the man was immune to his Jedi mind tricks and he consumed the entire thing without sharing. I almost felt badly enough to go get one and give him some. :) These are supposedly the 'Dog Days' of summer, but if it keeps raining the way it has been we are all going to have to consider buying a boat.

Crossing paths with SPML 01/28/2004 05:15 AM
I highlighted Service Provisioning Markup Language last week when referring to its mention in a survey of identity federation projects. SPML also came up last week in a conversation I had with former Waveset Vice President Mark McClain, and it came up again in an announcement Novell made about a change in product alignment, packaging and nomenclature.

mycroft Yesterday's experiment reminded me that I've been meaning to spend more time with search engines other than Google. So I visited the Mycroft download page and picked up Mozilla plugins for AllTheWeb and Teoma. It's funny how arbitrary factors can influence your behavior. Mozilla's search box orders the plugins alphabetically. AllTheWeb is thus on the path of least resistance, and I've been using it often. Of course, it's really impressive. ...

Earlier today I was having a discussion at work that involved my weblog. This certainly isn't the first time, but this one really got me thinking about things in a different way. Without going into any real detail, the person I was talking with asked if I bothered to talk to internal groups before I say something good or bad about them, their products, or their competitors on my weblog. This is not the first time I've been asked that...

Coffee Houses Cross Paths with History,
Again

Coffee Houses Cross Paths with History,
Again
01/07/2004 02:37 PM
From the There's Nothing New Under the Sun Department, coffee houses in the 17th and 18th centuries were the Wi-Fi hotspots of their day: The Economist writes (without byline, as is its wont) about the parallels between the political and editorial foment that occurred in 17th and 18th century coffeehouses in England and, to a lesser extent, France, and how these centers of iquity (as opposed to iniquity, Wodehouse might write) led to the foundation of insurers and publications. In fact, coffee houses were often the mailing addresses for folks before street addresses were common. It all sounds awfully familiar, doesn't it? Wi-Fi hotspots in coffee houses thus have this excellent pedigree. The author of this piece is the same fellow who write the charming and excellent The Victorian Internet, which relayed the development of the telegraph and its effect on the planetary infosphere, and how it paralleled (and predicted) Internet trends, including the bubble. The author is working on a book now about the coffee house/Internet cafe overlap....

International Protection from Crappy
Porn Week of Resistance
11/06/2003 01:52 AM
Now there's a (>cough<) mouthful. Anyway: the final week of October, 2003 was declared "Protection from Pornography Week" by President Bush. Some object to the declaration's equation of "pornography" as a whole with child porn, or adult entertainment produced in a coercive, exploitative manner. In other words, they believe porn per se isn't a problem -- bad porn is. And, by golly, they're taking action.
What do I mean by "crappy"? Well, basically, I mean pornography that doesn't affirm what sexuality really should be all about -- or what being a human being really should be all about. (...) So I thought I would launch a new campaign... because I believe that what we really need isn't to be protected from pornography, but to show resistance against crappy pornography and support for better, sex-positive, humane pornography that is produced without exploitation, without perpetuating damaging stereotypes, and that fully affirms the principle of informed, revocable consent.

Italian anti-war group to assist Iraqi
resistance
11/19/2003 08:12 AM
The BBC is reporting that an Italian anti-war and anti-globalization group named Antiimperialista is collecting money to be sent to the Iraqi resistance. So far, they have collected 12,000 euros, and plan to give the money to an Iraqi organization called the Iraqi Patriotic Opposition, the leaders of which have ties to Saddam Hussein's Baath party. Antiimperialista is not going to place any restrictions on the use of this money. According to a spokesman for the group, "We support the armed struggle in Iraq. our money is to help them, it doesn't matter to us if they use it buy weapons, Kalashnikovs, or medicines for people."
