Inter Press Service (IPS) was set up in 1964 as a non-profit international cooperative of journalists. Its founders were Roberto Savio, an Italian freelance journalist, and Pablo Piacentini, an Argentinean political scientist who was then a student in Rome.
In its early days, the primary objective of IPS was to fill the information gap between Europe and Latin America after the political turbulence following the Cuban revolution of 1959. The agency’s network grew steadily and expanded to include Asia and Africa. The objectives broadened – to cover news from the "Third World", give a voice to the voiceless, promote information on development issues, and help create a better balance and flow of international news.

Geez. My head is spinning. Anyway, BoingBoing reader Adam fields points us to a new "Orkut community" (one of many online affinity groups within the social networking service), called "Orkut Paranoia" (link requires free membership). Adam says, "This formed out of some interesting discussion we've had about what's going on... summarized in this blog post:"

1) Orkut claims irrevocable unlimited license rights to everything you post. Most people don't understand what that means. One example of this is that many of my friends have posted pictures that I've taken. This is probably not a problem, generally, but they've granted Orkut a license to use them without consulting me, and created a legal tangle should I have a problem with that, forcing me to have to perform a legal struggle with Orkut, because of their unwitting actions. I think this is rude behavior on the part of Orkut, but their prerogative to demand.
2) Orkut may share personal information with Google in an unrestricted way. Google is unwilling (so far) to discuss what use they may make of that information.
3) Google's privacy policy possibly has some holes in it with regards to data collected by way of means other than use of the google.com website.

I suspect that Orkut is a way for Google to gather personal information about their clientele for marketing purposes, and to try to form a more solid relationship beyond "I just use Google for search because it's convenient". This is not terribly nefarious, but the kind of data that could be collected to do so has wide potential for abuse, and people should be aware that that's what's going on. Some may not care, but many people I know are signing up without reading or understanding the implications of the above three points.

For embedded computing hackers, mass storage (like hard drives) is often the most frustrating piece of the puzzle, as the fragile and power-hungry spin of the hard drive is usually the last non-solid-state part in the whole deployment. And while most engineers will just use a Compact Flash card, sometimes the only option is an ATA (hard drive) connection; that's where the IFD-iV flash memory parts from IO Data Device Corporation come in. Basically just flash memory drives, the defining feature of the IFD-iVs (besides fairly rugged operating specifications) is that they use the standard ATA connection of a hard drive, meaning they can be deployed in place of hard drives when necessary. Models up to 2GB in capacity will be available for around $2,100 -- maybe we'll just deal with the fragile hard drives instead.

Her portraits of humans are shot within a public context--a Rubiks Cube competition, a gathering of swingers, a Miami Beach retirement community, spring break, a porn star academy--and expose the paradoxical relationship between the individual and the system they are acting within. She captures moments that brilliantly juxtapose the fantasy stage drop with the banal details that undermine its desired effect. She is one of a rare few female photographers to document the porn world, though, frankly, the art world’s current obsession with the adult industry is starting to wear extremely thin. I found her Rubik’s cute, retirement photos, and spring break coverage more intriguing. Not (all are) office safe, unless you work somewhere kinky.

New obsession: the work of a war photographer named James Nachtwey, who was injured earlier this month in Iraq. At left: "Iraqi soldiers search for what they thought was a downed American pilot along the banks of the Tigris River. No pilot was found, and the U.S. denied that any aviator had been lost over Baghdad." T his is a link to his work this Spring in Iraq, and rumor has it there's more work from Iraq coming from him soon. This book of his work released a few years ago is fantastic. Xeni Jardin: Nerve.com recently launched "The Daily Siege" -- a blog-oid daily feature from fashion and erotic shooter Clayton James Cubitt, aka Siege, who's been the subject of numerous BoingBoing posts in the past. Some of the UI and access decisions the Nerve.com guys made, I'm not nuts about. But the content here -- both the images and the first-person narrative -- includes some real gems. For instance, this stream-of-consciousness post in which Siege explains how he went through a series of editing decisions that took a shot from its original raw state to an edited, reimagined, and dramatically richer state for publication. Very few personal blogs dig inside the creative process of working artists with this level of intimacy. Cool stuff. As Siege says here, it's like math class -- where you show your "dirty work" to your classmates, and share all of the details, both flattering and otherwise.
