The gas distribution industry continues to seek out the most advantageous, economical gas meter reading method -- One unique outgrowth of Nethercomm’s evolving technology base is the ability for Broadband-in-Gas to provide a very accurate means of monitoring natural gas usage by end users; in essence eliminating the traditional need for on-premise meters and their costly reading. After nine years in proprietary software migrating Windows machines to other Windows machines as CTO for Miramar Systems, Mike Sheffey saw the wave coming. The large corporations Miramar worked with were increasingly asking asking for a new migratory path: Windows to Linux. Instead of running in terror from the oncoming tsunami, Sheffey dove into the wave and founded Versora last December.

Forget The Electric Guitar, It's Time To
Go For The Digital Guitar

Forget The Electric Guitar, It's Time To
Go For The Digital Guitar
02/18/2004 01:19 PM
Growing up, I always thought the coolest thing my father owned was a beautiful Les Paul Gibson electric guitar. The famous electric guitars really haven't change all that much over the years since they were introduced, but they're finally catching up to the digital age. Gibson is getting ready to start selling a digital version of the guitar. It looks and plays like a regular Les Paul, but the sound is sent out digitally, making it easier to manipulate. Instead of regular audio cables, you'll plug in an ethernet cable (no WiFi?). Of course, some traditionalists are upset, and others point out that people will need all new equipment to use such a digital guitar. Among the features of the guitar will be the ability to upgrade the guitar as the digital offering improves. My first thought on reading this, though, was how soon it would be before someone hacks their guitar. We no longer need amplifiers that can go to 11, because we'll just be able to overclock our guitars.

Ex-Verizon Wireless Employee Stole
Minutes... Many, Many Minutes
08/13/2004 05:45 AM
An ex-Verizon Wireless employee has been charged with ste aling and reselling $20 million worth of prepaid cellular minutes. Since the minutes were activated via the numbers on some cards, he just copied down all the numbers. Interestingly, while the report says he stole $20 million worth of minutes, there's no indication how much he actually sold them for (or how many were actually used). Also, he continued to have access to the computer which stored the numbers after he left Verizon, which sounds like a major security screwup on Verizon Wireless' part.

BBC Interview of Rodney Brooks

BBC Interview of Rodney Brooks 09/19/2004 09:39 AM
A new BBC interview of Rodney Brooks is out. The focus is on whether or not continued research into robotics is worth the potential risks. Brooks suggests that robots taking over the world is not one of those risks and that the reason robots are scary is that they teach us more about ourselves. "Every technology, every science that tells us more about ourselves is scary at the time".

Rod Brooks Predicts the Future of Robots

Rod Brooks Predicts the Future of Robots 04/13/2005 11:04 PM
A Cornell Daily Sun article contains Rodney Brooks latest predictions about the future of robotics. As robots grow more like Humans, Brooks predicts some people will find it hard to accept the loss of "specialness" that humans believe they have. He likens it to learning to accept the fact that the Earth wasn't the center of the Universe, that humans and animals evolved from common ancesters, or that humans have fewer genes than a potato. "It may be hard, he explained, for humans to come to grips with machines that may equal or surpass their own capabilities. Few people want to admit that their emotions can exist within a machine." He even predicts legislation against machine that are able to feel emotion.
