Apple and
Real Networks are feuding over
access to Apple's popular
iPod music player. Real released Harmony , an
application
which
allows users to play music downloaded from
Real's online music store in, among other players, the iPod. The
iPod is designed to play music downloaded from iTunes , its popular online music
store , and especially those encoded with Apple's Advanced Audio Codec ( AAC )
standard. Apple
attacked the move, and threatened a programming reaction:
"We are stunned that RealNetworks has adopted the tactics and ethics
of a hacker Latest News about hacker to break into the iPod, and we
are investigating the implications of their actions under the DMCA
[Digital Millenium Copyright Act] and other laws. We strongly caution
Real and their customers that when we update our iPod software from
time to time, it is highly likely that Real's Harmony technology will
cease to work with current and future iPods."
Real, whose CEO had asked Apple to open the iPod to other file
formats earlier
this year ,
reiterated its request.

Music Sharers Move Around
Music Sharers Move Around
03/24/2005 04:47 PMHere's yet another study that it looks like the press is
misinterpreting to turn a small story into a bigger story. CNET is
claiming that people who share files online are moving away from
online services
to trading via
their iPods instead. That's a stretch. Beyond the technical
difficulty involved in "trading via your iPod," this claim is based on
simply the directional trends. The study claims that fewer people are
sharing music online, but more are using other means, such as trading
via an iPod. However, if you look at the absolute numbers, they're
likely to show that such "iPod trading" is a tiny fraction of those
who share online. Furthermore, you have to wonder if there's a bias
from those surveyed -- since they now know about all the lawsuits,
they may be less likely to admit they share music online. About the
only thing this study really shows is that people will continue to
look for a variety places to get the music they like, and they aren't
limited to just one. This means that for every effort the recording
industry makes to shut down file sharing offerings, people will just
move on to something else.

Coke's music downloads: the real thing?
12/08/2003 04:47 PMCoca-Cola is launching a digital music download service in the UK:
Coca-Cola will become the first high-profile consumer
brand to get involved directly in the music business, launching what
it claims will be the largest collection of tracks yet available.
(...) The site, MyCokeMusic.com, will launch in January next year
offering a catalogue of over 250,000 new and recent hits from more
than 8,500 artists with all four major record labels represented.
It also promises back catalogue hits from established artists,
although some major acts such as The Beatles have yet to allow their
songs to be sold digitally. Given the ongoing controversy over the
apparent conflict between its claim it would not market its drinks to
under-12s and its sponsorship of the chart, Coca-Cola today made it
clear only those over 18 would be able to buy music through the site.
It plans to back the launch with a year-long campaign to promote legal
music downloads, including promotions on its cans and bottles to win
free tracks.
