My MySQL Talks at OSCON 2004 03/06/2004 02:09 AM
Having seen that several others (Radwin: HTTP Caching and Cache-busting, Kruckenberg: Using MySQL for Binary Storage, Brad: LiveJournal's backend and memcached; past, present, and future) have blogged about their OSCON 2004 presentations being accepted, I thought I'd do the same. This year I proposed two talks. The abstracts are pretty limited so far, but here's what I've got: MySQL Performance Workshop This is a 3 hour tutorial style talk aimed at all MySQL users. OSCon slides

OSCon slides 11/19/2003 02:18 PM
Yesterday, Doug Tidwell was not able to make it to ApacheCon, so I filled in his slot.  He was scheduled to reprise his Building a Web service from SOAP to Nuts presentation from last year.  I got a PDF copy of his slides from last year (all 134 of them!), but this lost his animations (example: some slides were nigh unreadable as they had a red "Bad Idea" overlayed over the text).  So, instead I substituted a tutorial that I had prepared for the ETCON earlier this year.

Lounges at OSCON

Lounges at OSCON 07/20/2004 07:43 AM
Some time ago I got a mail from O'Reilly about OSCON, saying that the speaker registration / lounge will be at 16th floor. I think that's the top floor with the suites. I thought it was great. I was thinking that hopefully it'll be EMPTY and the big room that was the speakers lounge last year will be used as a general lounge area. (But alas, no - see below). The speakers lounge should be TINY. With "no talking!!" signs...

OSCON is Crowded

OSCON is Crowded 07/28/2004 01:07 PM
The attendance numbers are reportedly quite good, and I'm starting to believe them. I tried going to 3 different sessions during the first morning session today and they were all standing room only. I couldn't even get in the door. Doh! Luckily I have a few other things to keep me busy. However, for the sessions I'm really interested in, I'll have to get there extra early....

OSCON key signing

OSCON key signing 07/23/2004 01:07 AM
With Module::Signature it would make more sense than ever if the Perl community got a good web of trust built. The most productive thing, of course, would be if someone organized a keysigning event, but I suspect it's too late for that this year. (There's a keysigning page on the OSCON wiki). But even then I'd like to sign some keys and get my key signed. If you are going to be at OSCON and want to try, then do...

iSight, OSCON day 1 07/26/2004 02:30 PM
I brought my iSight. I wish there was more bandwidth here so I could do something fun with it ... Hmn. Yesterday we went to see Life of Brian with David Wheeler, his brother Alex (if I recall correctly), Casey and a bunch others. It was great, naturally. When we got there we thought we had lost Vani's stack of cards, so we rushed in a cab back to the hotel to find them and then get our rental out...

OSCON Network

OSCON Network 07/26/2004 03:38 AM
Eeek. The OSCON network seems to be misbehaving in new and interesting ways this year. First, port 5222 and 5223 (jabber) seems to be blocked. At least I can't connect to my jabber server from the wireless network. Other ports on the same box are working. We have our jabber server setup with SSL so we can have our secret IMs encrypted to the server. Second, the reverse dns is spectacularly messed up. The executive summary the servers who are...

OSCON call for proposals

OSCON call for proposals 12/19/2003 01:12 PM
O'Reilly has just released the Call for Proposals for the next Open Source conference (to be held in Portland, OR, July 26-30), whose theme is ""Opening the Future: Discover, Develop, Deliver." The keynotes look pretty stunning:
The keynote speakers for the next OSCON exemplify the event's wide-ranging mix: Freeman, George, and Esther Dyson, presenting a joint keynote address; Robert Lefkowitz, who was one of OSCON 2003's most thought-provoking speakers; Milton Ngan of Weta Digital, the company that created the digital effects for "The Lord of the Rings" films; and Tim O'Reilly. Other influential open source leaders will come to OSCON to accept the first Open Source Awards, produced by the Open Source Institute (OSI) and ZDNet (winners will be announced in stages during the winter and spring of 2004).

OSCON Tutorial Hacking 07/14/2004 12:04 AM
O'Reilly really wants the slides or material for the MySQL Performance Workshop session that I'm doing at OSCON in a few weeks. I'll give you one guess. See if you can figure out what I'm doing tonight... Good guess! I'm gonna start with plain text and worry about what (if any) "presentation software" I want to use later. I'm really tempted to just have them print an outline as the handout. All I really need is a whiteboard and a...

If you had ideas about the previously noted RSS Scaling Problem and are at OSCON now, stop by Douglas Fir to chat about it. Here's the session blurb: With RSS usage growing like mad, does having every client pull their own copy still make sense? Might it make more sense for some centralized services to aggregate the data? Or maybe a push system? PubSub? Other ideas? Let's toss some ideas around. Or see the session page....
