According to a recent study by Current Analysis, unit sales of notebooks equipped with a widescreen 15.4-inch display have steadily continued to climb throughout the first half of 2004. As of June 30, the widescreen market accounted for 48% of all notebooks sold, compared to only 15% in December 2003. The growth represents the highest share yet for the widescreen models since its introduction in the spring of 2003 and demonstrates widescreen systems are selling in greater numbers than its traditional square counterparts. Joy of Notebooks

Joy of Notebooks 08/10/2004 04:56 AM

Writing Joy of Typing reminded me of the Moleskine phenomenon.  I haven't used a Moleskine notebook yet but I am fascinated by all the raving going on.  I don't particularly care whether Van Gogh and Matisse used it or not.  But I do think think there is something there beyond vanity and word-of-mouth marketing.  Maybe it's in the texture of the paper, maybe it's the right size or shape.  Maybe it's the rubberband.  If it is the paper, then I wonder which type of pen or pencil goes best with the notebook.

BTW, I don't understand the pricing on the Moleskine notebooks.  Why does the diaries with 380 pages cost less than non-diaries which haves far less pages?  Do they use different papers?  Obviously the sketch book must use higher quality paper than others, but I wonder if the diaries use thinner pages to keep the thickness down.  Heh.  I guess I got moleskined.

I'll admit that all this is kind of silly if one takes a step back, but then life itself is silly if you take enough steps back.

Weblogs and Wikis as Work Arounds

"The Internet really has become my notebook in a big way. Used to be a pretty much just a research tool, but now it's the warehousing and organizing tool as well. I can almost picture what a personal, interactive portal on the Internet might look and feel like...almost. Tom quotes Tim Berners-Lee whose original vision for the Internet was 'to connect every person to every other person.' We're getting there..." [Weblogg-ed News]

Notebooks For Gamers?

Notebooks For Gamers? 02/11/2004 11:07 PM
Every time I wonder why anyone would buy a desktop machine again, when notebooks are quite powerful and much more useful when portable, someone reminds me of the gamers. The gamers always want more powerful and customizable desktop machines so they can do more with their machines. However, the notebook makers are realizing that the desktop market may be a dying one, and thus are trying their best to create notebook computers for gamers. Of course, as someone points out in the article, the price difference will still make this a very small market. I also wonder if it wouldn't help to make these gaming notebooks more easily customizable, since part of the appeal of desktops seems to be the ability to modify them.

Blogs are novelists' notebooks (too)

Blogs are novelists' notebooks (too) 03/13/2003 11:28 AM
Today in Gibson's blog, a rumination on what it feels like to be a novelist between novels:
LIKE A MAGPIE WITHOUT A NEST

That's how Rudy Rucker, in an email yesterday, described how it feels to be a novelist between books. No place to take the shiny things we constantly find. He's treating his own condition, he said, by writing a horror sorry about having belonged to a country club in Lynchburg, Virginia, in the early Eighties (man, that *is* scary).

No place for the magpie mind to take the trinkets and bits of tinfoil, currently. If I bring them here, for instance, I'm just leaving them on your window-ledge, something no magpie would ever be satisfied with doing.

I've been using this blog to keep track of stuff that needs to work its way into my novels for years now. Rucker's blog is nothing but notes on his books. Sterling says you can extrapolate his next book from this links on his blog. I betcha that's true of Warren Ellis, too. Blogs are the new novelist's commonplace book. I've been saying this for a while, but I thought I might be the only one. Link Discuss

Although the typical notebook computer still has a modest 12-inch or 14-inch display, manufacturers began introducing larger-screen models in 2002. And earlier this month, Apple unveiled a 17-inch PowerBook, pushing the boundaries even farther. Are giant notebooks getting too big to be portable?

DaVinci's notebooks, a page a day

DaVinci's notebooks, a page a day 05/31/2004 04:03 AM
Matt Webb is a real Renaissance geek, and as such he's too busy to actually read the great and defining works fo the Renaissance, such as DaVinci's imposing 1,565-page Notebooks. At least not all in one gulp. So Matt's poured all of the Notebooks (scarfed from the Project Gutenberg site) into a script that sends out one page a day as RSS. This is not unlike Phil Gyford's Page-a-Day-Pepys'-Diary thing. Link (via Kottke)
