Verizon Doubles DSL Speed

Verizon Doubles DSL Speed 09/07/2004 11:25 PM

Verizon Communications has doubled the speed of consumer DSL service is a dozen east coast states. If the market reacts well, the remaining states will receive the same faster DSL alternative. The additional bandwidth is a reaction to Comcast's doubling the speed of its cable broadband service, earlier this year. The extra bandwidth will be a big hit with online gamers and professionals who work from home.

For about $40 a month, the new DSL bandwidth will be 3 Mbps, downstream, and 768 Kbps, upstream. For cost-conscious customers who only send and receive e-mail and surf occasionally, a half-speed option will be available for $30 a month.

Dave's Opinion
Just over half of online Americans have broadband service at home: 63 million or 51 percent. There's always a use for more bandwidth, even by those who don't consider themselves technically sophisticated or have flexibility in their personal schedules. When it comes to network connectivity, faster is always better.

Panasonic VDR M70 with DVD-RAM Burner

Panasonic VDR M70 with DVD-RAM Burner 08/20/2004 08:05 AM

panasonic-VDR-M70.jpg imagePanasonic's new VDR M70 is another DVD-burner on-board digital camcorder, although in addition to DVD-R it also supports the DVD-RAM format (in 3-inch disc varieties, of course). In addition, the VDR M70 has an anemic 1.2-megapixel still camera, 10x optical zoom, and a 2.5-inch LCD monitor. Altogether sort of pedestrian, really, although it does have image stabilization, which should be standard on almost everything these days, but surprisingly often isn't.

dispy2_blur.jpgThe DISPY 2 makes for a quick-and-dirty memory card backup solution, writing the contents of your memory cards to CD with no computer required. The DISPY takes nearly every form of memory card, including CF 1 & 2, SD, MMC, miniSD, MemoryStick and MemoryStick DUO. The device possesses an understated style-magnetism, illustrated by the memory cards' motion blur in the press photo above. Unfortunately, the device doesn't write to DVDs and I haven't a clue if you can write from multiple cards simultaneously or anything like that. Naturally, the DISPY 2 is a follow-up to the DISPY 1, which didn't support nearly as many formats. The device is also USB 2.0 compatible, in case you have a computer nearby, and it's on sale in Japan now, though no price was available.

Apparently, the the invisible coat is yesterday's technology, and its inventor is hard at work focusing on building the invisible wall. As with the cloak, this works just by projecting an image onto the wall of what one would see if the wall weren't there. His goal is to make it someone in a room that had no outside windows, could look and see what was going on outside. A simple suggestion: simply installing windows seems like a perfectly reasonable solution in most cases where this situation exists.

An Invisible Hand? - An Unexplained Effect During Solar Eclipses Casts Doubt on General Relativity
http://www.economist.com/science/displayStory.cfm?story_id=3104321

“ASSUME nothing” is a good motto in science. Even the humble pendulum may spring a surprise on you. In 1954 Maurice Allais, a French economist who would go on to win, in 1988, the Nobel prize in his subject, decided to observe and record the movements of a pendulum over a period of 30 days. Coincidentally, one of his observations took place during a solar eclipse. When the moon passed in front of the sun, the pendulum unexpectedly started moving a bit faster than it should have done. Since that first observation, the “Allais effect”, as it is now called, has confounded physicists. If the effect is real, it could indicate a hitherto unperceived flaw in General Relativity—the current explanation of how gravity works. That would be a bombshell—and an ironic one, since it was observations taken during a solar eclipse (of the way that light is bent when it passes close to the sun) which established General Relativity in the first place. So attempts to duplicate Dr Allais's observation are important. However, they have had mixed success, leading sceptics to question whether there was anything to be explained. Now Chris Duif, a researcher at the Delft University of Technology, in the Netherlands, has reviewed the evidence. According to a paper he has just posted on arXiv.org, an online publication archive, the effect is real, unexplained, and could be linked to another anomaly involving a pair of American spacecraft.

Searching the Invisible Tabs
http ://searchenginewatch.com/searchday/article.php/3115131

Tired of wading through thousands -- possibly millions -- of results to your Web searches? How would it be if search engines offered lists of category tabs -- so you could confine your search to relevant Web sites? Too restrictive, too cumbersome (after all, how many categories would there need to be)? Well then, how about invisible tabs -- behind-the-scenes functions that would automatically categorize your query and deliver results within that category? AskJeeves and others already do it to a degree. Example: Test AskJeeves against Google for "pictures of DNA." AskJeeves delivers images; Google offers a list of URLs. "It's not rocket science to see your query and decide that it makes sense to push the invisible image tab for you. But the change it produces, and perceived relevance to me, is dramatic," says SearchEngineWatch.com editor Danny Sullivan. To avoid frustrating searchers by, say, returning shopping lists instead product reviews, the search engine might come back with questions formatted as listings: "What would you like to do? Show me prices for this product from merchants across the Web; Show me product reviews from across the Web; Show me general matching content from across the Web."

Yahoo Trolls the Invisible Web

Yahoo Trolls the Invisible Web 03/06/2004 01:56 AM

Yahoo crawls deep into the Web: I'm nervous that this will lead to people found out about that murder conviction in '78.

Yahoo on Tuesday began a systematic effort to draw more content into its searchable database of Web documents, its latest bid to win Web surfers from search rival Google.

The Web portal, based in Sunnyvale, Calif., introduced its Content Acquisition Program designed to index the billions of documents contained in public databases but that are commonly inaccessible to search engines, or what's called the invisible or deep Web.

Using Quantum Cryptography to Find
Invisible Men
06/28/2004 11:25 AM
Since HG Wells first published his lauded exploration of racial identity, Invisible Man, people have been entranced by the myth of invisible men--be they heroes such as Invisible Woman of the Fantastic four, or villains such as Hollow Man's Sebastian Caine. But is it truly a myth, or do invisible men walk among us? And if an invisible man were to be created, how would we detect him and track his movements?

Fujitsu's Invisible Cameraphone
Hyperlinks

Fujitsu's Invisible Cameraphone
Hyperlinks
07/05/2004 10:47 AM

fujitsu_invisible.jpg imageFujitsu has developed a method for invisibly embedding information into printed images as small as a centimeter square. By printing a series of (hopefully) imperceptible yellow dots into an image, up to 12 digits of numeric information can be hidden, allowing a company to embed a phone number or encoded URL. Then, by taking a picture of the image with a cameraphone or PDA, special software can decode the numbers and call the company's phone number or look up their webpage. It's just in a proof-of-concept stage at the moment, but if they can jam a few more bits of data, like say a full character set instead of numbers, it could be a handy technology.

But if it's invisible, how will anyone know it's there? They'll have to make a little logo to indicate it somehow, and then it's not any better than any of the other visual hyperlinking systems out there.
