Advertisers Sue Paid Search Companies
For Click Fraud

Advertisers Sue Paid Search Companies
For Click Fraud
04/05/2005 02:16 PM
One of the biggest issues facing the paid search industry is the amount of "click fraud" that occurs. It's a well known problem, and many advertisers chalk up click fraud as an expense, just like retailers chalk up shoplifting as an expense. Many of the paid search companies will refund some money to advertisers when they discover click fraud, but apparently those advertisers don't think enough is being done. A group of advertisers has sued all the big names in paid search and are trying to get it turned into a class action suit. If the case does go ahead, it could represent serious problems for the paid search companies -- as it's tough for a court to force them to stop people from clicking fraudulently. Of course, the problems with click fraud tend to be more focused on contextual advertising sites, rather than search sites itself. On search sites, the main reason for click fraud is generally to drive up expenses of a competitor, depleting their advertising budget. On third party content sites, though, the incentive is often to make money for the content provider. If this case does actually get somewhere, it seems likely that some of the paid search/contextual ad network companies will start to shift away from pay-per-click to other performance metrics, such as impressions and pay-per-action.

theodp writes "Not to be outdone by Amazon's 1-Click patent, Microsoft snagged a patent from the USPTO Tuesday for a Time based hardware button for application launch, which covers causing different actions to occur depending upon whether a button is pressed for a short period of time, a long period of time, or multiple times within a short period of time. So does pressing car radio buttons for different periods of time to change or set stations constitute patent infringement?" What about double-clicking? Seems like a fair amount of prior art. I know my caller ID box requires a "double-click" to delete phone numbers. Also, I may not remember correctly, but I was under the impression that Apple's famous "one-button" mouse allows you to fake a right mouse click if you hold down the button.

Fighting Click Fraud

Fighting Click Fraud 07/20/2004 05:44 PM

Exposing click fraud: This is why I think that, ultimately, pay-per-click business models are flawed for the advertisers.

[...] some marketing executives estimate that up to 20 percent of fees in certain advertising categories continue to be based on nonexistent consumers in today's search industry.

[...] Human operations can be more difficult to detect because a wide network of people can click on ads from different computers across many regions, without a steady pattern. According to a report in the India Times, residents are being hired to click paid links from home, with the hopes of making between $100 to $200 per month.

I think the future is pay-for-performance (the advertiser only gets paid if someone actually puchases something).

This is an evolution, but so was the original pay-per-impression model that's slowly vanishing these days. I remember when pay-per-impression began to lose favor, site owners protested by saying, "But hat's how it works on TV and radio..."

However, with those mediums, you can't easily measure performance. With the Web, you can. That fact led to the demise of per-per-impression, and I think it will eventually lead to the demise of pay-per-click too. Pay-for-performance is pretty foolproof — the merchant doesn't pay until they have cash in hand, and that's hard to spoof.
