T-Mobile DE Gets Nokia 6630

T-Mobile DE Gets Nokia 6630 09/17/2004 08:17 AM

tmobile_6630.jpg imageLooks like T-Mobile Germany is getting the Nokia 6630 (or else they made a bad choice in stock photography in this marketing page (and putting it in the release copy)). I wonder if that means T-Mobile will carry it in the US? My guess would be no, since the whole point of the 6630 is that it works on high-speed 3G networks - something T-Mobile USA doesn't really have. (Thanks, Armin!)

T-Mobile Carrying the Nokia 6600 04/20/2004 07:17 AM
I'm not 100% sure when it dropped to channel, but it looks like T-Mobile has started carrying the Nokia 6600, the Series 60 tri-band phone. Feature-wise, it's similar to many other Series 60 devices, albeit with a nicer 65,536-color screen than some of the earlier models (such as the popular...

More Mobile File Sharing: This Time From
Nokia

For quite some time, we've been wondering why the music industry was so excited about the money they were making from ringtones, since they all seemed to ignore the lessons they learned the past few years online: by overpricing ringtones and making them difficult to get, they were going to be taken by surprise when the "Napster for mobile phones" showed up. It appears that it's getting closer -- but the most interesting part is that the developments seem to be coming from large companies rather than a kid in a dorm room. Last week we wrote about SK Telecom's new file sharing application, and today's New Scientist reports that Nokia Research is working on their own file sharing application. They admit that it was more difficult than they expected due to the unreliable nature of mobile phone networks, but that it is possible. As the article notes, the issue (once again) isn't really technical, but how the recording industry will respond (easy to predict that one: badly). Of course, what the recording industry still doesn't seem to understand is that these applications don't go away, no matter how much they complain (and sue). The next trick, though, will be seeing how developers take the idea of P2P one step further once they realize that by adding P2P in a mobile world, it lets users do more than just swap songs.

Nokia, the world's largest mobile telephone maker, is getting awfully close to bringing a handheld, Internet-connected television to the consumer market. The Finland-based megacorporation has launched a new category of handheld product -- called mobile media devices -- which feature Nokia's largest, most colorful display: a 640x320 touch-sensitive screen that renders as many as 65,536 colors. Nokia says these new devices, to hit the market in Q2 of 2004, offer plenty of new opportunity for Symbian, Java, and C++ developers and is now making SDKs available for free download.

NOKIA_7280.jpg imageOkay, so Nokia just dropped three phones onto us, and they're pretty crazy, and by 'crazy' I mean 'sort of ugly.' I have to cop to sort of liking the Tron-style and the asymetrical design - the one round corner, one square corner 'new Nokia' look - but I have a feeling I'll be in the minority. Would it kill them to just release a nice, silver phone that you could take home to mom?

Anyway, here's the breakdown, and I'll probably go after this post in a couple of waves. The one pictured here is the Nokia 7280, which you might notice doesn't have a keypad. That's because Nokia designed it to be "sleek," "sexy," and "edgy." (I'm not joking.)
