Hotel Room Gadgets Confuse The Best Of
Us
11/18/2003 04:46 AMWhile hotels are constantly looking to
add
funky new technologies to their rooms, it appears that they're
facing some backlash from travelers who are pissed off that
the technology is
impossible to use. If you're using a TV, you basically want to be
able to turn it on, change the channels and change the volume via a
remote control. You don't want 50 different buttons with tiny,
incomprehensible text. Add to that the "special" video check outs and
pay-per-view system and people find themselves accidentally ordering
movies and checking out in the middle of their stay. Meanwhile,
others are having problems understanding hotel alarm clocks, minibars
and safes. For a while, hotels were promoting "smart rooms" that
would turn on the light and the radio as you opened the door.
Unfortunately, when most people enter a room and the lights and radio
come on, they get scared because they think someone else is in there.
All of these ideas probably sounded nice on paper, but no one seems to
think through the real world use case. Gadgets in hotel rooms need to
be
very simple and straightforward, since people are only going
to use them a few times. They don't want a learning curve - they just
want things to be intuitive.

Checking In On The Dorm For Dreamers
Checking In On The Dorm For Dreamers
12/03/2003 11:06 AMLast year we had a post about the special
dorm
for entrepreneurs at the University of Maryland. It's a dorm for
students who want to start businesses. The dorm is set up to make it
easier for students to run their own businesses, with full wireless
connectivity, professional looking conference rooms, offices, white
boards, and lots of typical office amenities. They also bring in
speakers and have sessions on some of the more important aspects of
starting and running your own business. Finally, they encourage
students to go off and build the business of their dreams. The Boston
Globe now has an article
looking at how the program is doing, and it sounds like
it's doing great. Lots of companies have been started, and the
students seem to love the experience they're getting. They especially
seem to enjoy the fact that they get to be around other like-minded
students who they can share stories with and learn from. It sounds
like there are even more companies this year than last year, and quite
a few are making money. Whether or not any of these companies turns
into a sustainable business is less important than the experience the
students are getting. It will be interesting to see if other
universities follow suit.

04/02/2005 01:30 PMAP - College junior Kyle Taylor is downloading hundreds of songs by No
Doubt, Bruce Springsteen and others onto the Compaq laptop in his
cramped dormitory room. With a few more clicks of his mouse, Taylor is
watching commercial-free "Seinfeld" episodes on his computer. In just
minutes, he then downloads the entire movie "A League of Their Own."
The 20-year-old is not breaking any laws. Nor is he at risk of
expensive lawsuits by the entertainment industry over copyright
violations.

College Kids Draining Dorm Electricity
Grids
11/17/2003 04:17 AMCollege kids are showing up at school with an increasing number of
gadgets and electronics - and they all need power. Universities are
discovering that they need to
upgrade their electrical systems
to provide more power and more outlets per room - and even then
they're finding it's sometimes not enough. One study found that an
average freshman arrived with 18 electrical gadgets. One director of
residences claims that dorm rooms these days look like mini
electronics stores. Of course, I don't think this sort of thing is
limited to dorm rooms. I'm sure plenty of home users are discovering
that they're draining more electricity and using up more outlets than
ever before.

06/06/2004 12:48 PM
Wired News has a
short regurgitation from Reuters about the increasing number of gadget
users who are turning to solar power to keep them mobile. It's not
perfect, of course -- cloudy days can still easily double the recharge
time of batteries -- but as the efficiency of solar cells improve, we
may well see increased ubiquity of solar power for all our devices,
especially as flexible, wearable panels become available.

Do You Need A Spare For Your Gadgets?
Do You Need A Spare For Your Gadgets?
03/29/2005 06:58 AMStories about how people live via their mobile phones (without backing
the data up) and would
face
serious consequences for losing them are nothing new. While this
USA Today piece covers much of the same ground, it includes the story
of one guy
who actually carries around spare gadgets for the
situations in which he loses his gadgets. Having had a laptop
hard-drive die three days into a 10-day business trip last year, the
idea of toting around a spare laptop whenever I travel sometimes seems
appealing (though, I've resisted). Still, will we reach a stage where
our gadget bags will need to double in size, just in case our gadgets
get lost, stolen or broken? Then again, as the end of the article
points out, sometimes letting go of these gadgets can be quite a
relief. It's likely that
plent
y of others would agree.

The most and least loved gadgets
12/05/2003 01:53 PMCNET has put together a reader poll of the least loved and most loved
gadgets of all-time. Topping the list of the most loved gadgets:
Voodoo's appropriately named Envy M460 laptop (though the conspicuous
absence from the top 5 of a single Apple product must be duly noted).
And what forlorn gadget tops the list of the least loved, you might
wonder? Why Nokia's N-Gage gamephone, of course. Read [Thanks,

Sex, Ukeleles, Gadgets...and more!
12/25/2003 11:36 AM Have
a merry, sex and gadget filled hyper-commercialized Japanese
Christmas. "Well it all started when a Spanish Jesuit
missionary named St. Francis Xavier brought Christmas to Japan in
1549...." The
Jesuit bid to
Christianize Japan was a flop though, and now -
while Jews in the West, for example, tend to go out for Chinese food
on Christmas Eve, the Japanese had little connection to the Christian
version - so they invented their own! Syncretistic Japan pulls in
random elements of Western "Christmas" and recombines in
pleasing new ways! ( shocking only to Christians ). Santa Claus on the
Cross and more!
A proper Christmas in Japan - for singles -
involves a hot date and visit to a "Love Hotel" where
"you might be directed by scantily-clad female elves to rooms
complete with Christmas trees and life-size reindeer watching the
proceedings with interest." and
"Grop
e Free Commutes", for Japanese women tired of having their
asses grabbed on the subway by drunk salarymen returning from
"Forget the Year" parties.
This
fine blog chronicles it all: " the
Dolphin-and-fish-surrounded Christmas tree", Ukelele Christmas
parties - "I wandered into a score of middle aged Japanese ladies
wearing Hawaiian shirts and plastic lays, tuning up their
ukuleles" and more. And don't forget to buy some
cool
new
gadgets.
