The Data Assistant for Microsoft® Office PowerPoint® 2003 provides an easy-to-use method of inserting and managing graphical data objects such as Visio drawings, and Excel charts and named ranges into PowerPoint presentations. There are three basic features for the tool: inserting graphical data objects into PowerPoint, saving graphical data objects for future use, and retrieving saved graphical data objects for reuse. Because the Data Assistant creates a connection between PowerPoint and the host application of the data object (Excel or Visio), you have the option of inserting the data object as it was saved or refreshing it to reflect any changes that were made to the data object.

Apps
01/26/2004 01:10 AM
Microsoft continues to build bridges between Office desktop apps and reservoirs of back-office data. The "Information Worker Bridge" project now under way seeks to make it easier for integrators or in-house developers to make Excel or Word de-facto front ends for back-end accounting, ERP or other applications, sources said. In theory, this would take back-office integration beyond ODBC drivers and InfoPath, the Office application that lets people build dynamic forms on their desktops that tap into back-office XML data.

Several years ago, I wrote "Opening Up to OpenOffice.org: Finding an Alternative to Microsoft Word" -- my most quoted article. At that time OpenOffice.org (OOo) was barely known, so I confined myself to highlights. Now that OOo is starting to be used in business, a more detailed look seems overdue. Accordingly, I compared the beta of OOo Writer 2.0 with Microsoft Word 2003. Both are adequate for most users' purposes, so I focused on functions that power users are likely to want:

Nokia 9300 Communicator Interview

Nokia 9300 Communicator Interview 09/10/2004 07:04 AM

< img src="http://www.gizmodo.com/archives/images/nokia_9300_int.jpg" alt="nokia_9300_int.jpg image" width="220" height="139" class="right border"/>All About Symbian has a nice article with Mark Squires, Nokia's UK Head of Communications. It's a bit fawning, but considering the source I think that's somewhat understandable, and it does go a long way in explaining the mindset behind the 9300's relative lack of features compared to its big brother, the Nokia 9500. According to Squires, the customer base using the 9500 simply didn't want Wi-Fi and a camera, so they pulled those features out, scaled the whole thing down, and went for something more svelte and simple.

There's an implication that Americans want too many features crammed in, while Europeans are satisfied with something straightforward and "smart." And that's fine, except the planned price for the 9300 is around $850 - seems like a lot of money for a 150MHz smartphone with no Wi-Fi and limited features, doesn't it?

Microsoft is looking to extend the reach of its Office Communicator 2005 instant-messaging (IM) client via a new version that will be completely Web-based. Microsoft is set to kick off on July 15 a first private beta release of what it's currently calling the "Office Communicator Web Access" client, company officials said on Tuesday. Communicator Web Access is similar to Microsoft's Outlook Web Access product, said Anoop Gupta, the corporate vice president in charge of Microsoft's Real-Time Collaboration Business Unit. "People need reach and access from a lot of places," Gupta told Microsoft Watch, in explaining why Microsoft decided to do a Web-based version of Communicator Office Communicator 2005, code-named "Istanbul," is Microsoft's integrated client for IM, voice, video, telephony and Web conferencing.

Star Trek Communicator: Patented

Star Trek Communicator: Patented 07/07/2004 06:04 PM
Xybernaut, the grandfather of well-hyped "wearable computing" that perpetually seems to have problems actually selling products has now announced two wearable computing patents, both of which seem pretty questionable. The first is for an "ergonomic display," which apparently is a display unit that includes rubber handgrips with "tactile ridges." The second, though, is for a "personal communicator" system, that "combines the functionality of a cell phone (or mobile phone), a body supported computer and a pager." Star Trek may want to claim prior art, but Xybernaut claims this is a bit different from previous wearable patents in that this version includes "detachable" parts. Who knew that by making something detachable, it was suddenly patentable? Maybe King Missile should claim prior art...

For all intents and purposes, lest any of you be confused, this is life imitating art in the finest sense. The system can recognize 30,000 words once you press the button on the badge to activate it. I'd give it no more than 10 years before this sort of technology trickles down into the middle class, but I hope to see it sooner than that.
