Researchers and developers at Microsoft are mixing form with function through software asthetics. Studies have shown that visual stimuli can affect mood, attention and memory. Through graphics and other visual effects, the company is tapping into emotional responses that can help the brain positively process information. Tools in development for managing and displaying digital photos are just one example of how Microsoft is fusing cognitive science and software design.

Here're my running notes from Ti m O'Reilly's opening keynote at the O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference in San Diego.
What's on the radar now?

* Amazon Hacks, Google Hacks, eBay Hacks, Spidering Hacks, etc

* You might think you're not a Linux user, but if you use Google, you use Linux. What you use isn't (just) what's on your desk

* The Internet is the platform

* Killer apps are built on OSS, but aren't themselves OSS -- like Google and Amazon

* User contributions are critical to market dominance: Listmania in AMZN search-results (BN.com doesn't have this -- and it shows, and they have 1/10 the market of AMZN)

* MSN maps are really cool and useful, but there's no collab element, just blinking banners that appear to be saying "Go away user, go away"

A new comparison site has popped up to tackle the rapidly expanding Voice-over-Internet Protocol market. Voipreview.org is “one-stop shop” to researching the best packages and rates of VoIP providers in your area. VoIP providers are examined side-by-side in categories such as cost, features, installation, customer service, sound quality, features, price and overall value. Is Apple finally playing fair? 08/23/2004 10:22 AM
The Register <A HREF="http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/08/23/macrovision_fairpla y/">reports</A> that Macrovision Corporation, "a leading provider of digital rights management (DRM) technologies for the video, music and software industries" is "sufficiently confident" that Apple will license FairPlay support for its <A HREF="http://www.macrovision.com/products/cds/cds300/index.shtml& quot;>CDS-300</A> player — so confident, in fact, that it "is has begun telling customers that it will add iTunes and iPod support to its software in Q4." The update is also expected to include its RealTime DRM Encoding system, which converts on the fly a disc's Red Book audio source into FairPlay-protected AAC files, ATRAC 3 tracks for Sony portable music players or WMAs, according to a given user's personal preference. Whereas RealNetworks called for FairPlay licensing for largely selfish reasons, Macrovision and SunnComm <A HREF="http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/07/19/macrovision_and_sun ncomm/"> requested</A> Apple open the technology "to allow it to provide iTunes-ready compressed audio tracks alongside the Windows Media Audio files its CDS-300 copy protection mechanism already offers." In other words, copy-protected CDs would otherwise only be able to be converted into Windows Media Audio. Thus far, Apple has been very tight-lipped about FairPlay licensing, but a partnership such as this would serve to benefit iPod and iTunes users.

TRANSCENDING THE TECHNOLOGY CONSTRAINTS
TO RAPID BUSINESS GROWTH: How Emerging

Internet Business Systems to Improve
Profits and Manage Change While Reducing
the Costs and Risks of Expansion
06/23/2004 03:08 AM
It’s a myth that the information technology (IT) requirements of emerging and midsize businesses are simpler than those of large enterprises. Virtually every day, we interact with the technology and business leaders of midsize companies whose IT demands not only rival the requirements of much larger companies, but in many cases exceed them.Fortunately, emerging and midsize businesses can resolve the dilemma of updating their outmoded IT infrastructure without massive one-time investments in technology. New technologies, such as Microsoft® .NET, enable companies to leverage previous investments in technology while step-by-step integrating their business systems to enable an efficient, cost-effective, and flexible solution to driving and managing growth. Super Science Fair Projects: Complete Guide to Science Fair Projects, Topics and Experiments
http://www.super-sc ience-fair-projects.com/

Today your teacher announced that your school is going to have a science fair and students are responsible for exhibiting their projects. What do you feel? Enthusiastic? Despondent? Dreadful? Fearful? Excited?" This statement opens the Super Science Fair Projects site. Actually, whether student or parent, science fair projects, while great ways to get students actively involved in learning the scientific method and problem solving, can be tough assignments. This site may help you with one of the hardest parts: coming up with an idea. The site does a great job of walking the visitor through the steps needed to plan and implement a project, from Choosing a Topic, the Scientific Method, and writing the Project Report. There are even tips on displaying your project, rehearsing, winning over judges, and what to expect the day of the fair. This is definitely a great tool to tap into when planning a science fair project.[From The NSDL Scout Report for Math, Engineering, and Technology, Copyright Internet Scout Project 1994-2003. http://scout.wisc.edu/]
